I'm glad you were able to tell them some of what is going on. This may prepare them a little more for the talk on Saturday. Please keep us updated.

Re: How to tell others you are terminally ill?

I lost my mother to bile duct cancer two weeks ago. She received the diagnosis in November and did the same as you... waited until there were more tests to tell us. In my case though she initially got a good prognosis at North Shore. So she just called and broke it to me. However I asked to get a second opinion at Sloan so my brother and I were present when that doctor told us the incurable, inoperable, late stage, spread diagnosis. Of course we were a mess but it is what it is and they will help and support you once they know.

I am so incredibly sorry. Cancer sucks. I do races for Fred's team now to raise money so maybe someday people don't have to experience what you and my mother experienced.

Re: How to tell others you are terminally ill?

I hardly come on here anymore but just happened to come on and see this tonight.

I don't have advice, but I wanted to just say you are so brave and amazing. On a day that I thought was "bad", you just woke me up and reminded me to count my blessings.

I will be thinking of you. Please keep us posted.

Re: How to tell others you are terminally ill?

My heart goes out to you and your family. I can't even imagine what it must feel being in your shoes, having to deal with this as a wife, and as a mother. But I can definitely relate to your kids and what they must be going through. I lost my mom when I was 22, she had non-hodgkin's lymphoma. Everything happened relatively quickly and although we weren't as prepared for the future, we tried to make the best of the situation and enjoy life with her, although when I look back, I wish I had done more. I completely agree with the suggestions many girls have expressed, great ideas! I wish I had more pics, or videos, or letters, or even a voicemail from her to help me keep those memories alive. Sometimes before I go to bed, I try to remember moments with my mom to keep those memories fresh and not forget them but I've realized that little by little Im starting to not being able to remember some of them as accurate as they once were, that's why having things that help u keep those memories alive is a must. Even the ideas that some people gave u about writing letters for the future, like birthdays, weddings, etc is excellent. I'm the last one of 7 kids, and I was the only that wasn't married at that time, I really believe that my mom was trying to hold on to life til she was able to help me form my own family, but unfortunately it didn't happen, and although I did feel her presence when I was walking down the aisle years later, reading a letter from her would have fulfilled my heart so much.

My husband also lost a parent due to cancer, his father and it was due to lung cancer. We actually lost him 2 weeks before our wedding. As you can imagine, we postponed the wedding for later. Unfortunately his dad didn't really tell us exactly what was going on, I think it was because he didn't wanna worry his family and also because he was determined to beat cancer and not talking about it or making just-in-case plans was off the table. But I really believe that although positivism is just as important as any treatment, acknowledging the situation and be ready for anything and everything is so important as well. My husband believes he missed on so many meaningful moments with his dad because he didn't know exactly what was happening and how bad it was. So yes, I definitely agree that u made a great decision by telling your family what's going on, I'm sure they'll give you so much love and all that good stuff just as much as you will to them, and even though there will be some dark moments, love will prevail and be remembered much more than anything else. You seem to be a great person and I loveeeee the way you write! I'm sure your husband and kids will definitely enjoy reading your letters.

Please, please keep us updated! Although I've never met you before, in some way I feel close to you, maybe it's because of this stupid disease or maybe because somehow and in some way you remind me of my mom Chat Icon
