Re: Working Moms and Sleep... Or lack thereof

I wake up at 5:30. Out of house around 6 (I work long hours, but early). I'm home at 5 usually.

I go to sleep at 9:30 (kids bedtime ritual starts at 9).

It's enough sleep.

We cook easy things (chicken, fish, grill, steak) with a veg. Cooking takes 30-60 min max starting at about 5:30-6:30. We food shop on weekends or one day a week.

During cooking, one of us is teaching kids.

After dinner, we've been taking a walk. Sometimes if one of us is working late, kids get teaching at this time.

We clean before bed (30-45 min a day with kids too: they pick up their toys).

Re: Working Moms and Sleep... Or lack thereof

I get home by 6:15. I cook sometimes, I microwave or order in/pick up. My son gets picked up at 4 by my mom so she feeds him and sometimes even bathes him.

I do laundry on weekends.

I try to clean up evenings and maybe even do a load if I find I need to. I food shop Sundays very early and my DS goes to bed at 8 so by 830 I am relaxing with DS and by 930 im in bed.

its exhausting!

How many hours do you get? What time do you get home? I get 5 hours a night and it's really aging me!

Do you do anything productive each night besides the necessity?

Do you cook?

6-7 hours a night. Depends when I go to bed. I'm up at 5:30 every morning. I'm home around 6PM with LO.

DH works nights so my day is usually...
530 - up and ready by 6
6AM - wake up LO
6:15 - our the door
6:30 - drop off LO
7AM - Get to work
5PM - leave work
5:30 - pick up LO
6PM - home and start LO's food
6:30 - LO eats while I make our dinner (if LO is eating what we are eating then this obviously changes)
7-8PM - do stuff around the house while LO plays
8PM - start bedtime routine
8:30PM - LO's bedtime

I'm starting to use the crockpot and plan on doing freezer meals when I can so it will be easier (and DH will have dinner ready before he leaves for work)

Productivity is just emptying and loading dishwasher, going through the mail, cleaning up after LO. The other stuff I wait for the weekend when I have an extra set of hands.

And YES! I'm EXHASUTED!

This.
She was up all the time until almost a year old.
Once she started sleeping better, my life changed

If it's the 2nd then I agree it's planning and staying organized. It's also about priorities and letting things go. IMO 7-8 hours of sleep, spending time with kids, excercise and eating home cooked nutritious meals is more important than mopped floors!

Yes! I try to get this through to DH, but he's a little wacky with certain things and once he sees something that needs to get done, he can't ignore it. He's getting better though, dropping things to spend time with DS, letting things go until Friday or the weekend. I can see a difference in him too.

My DH is same way sometimes. Drives me nuts. He says then things pile up. He is getting better too.

Are you only sleeping 5 hours because you have littles ones that dont sleep through the night? Or is it that you are staying up late/waking early to get things done?

As a FTWM of 2 and single for the last 5-6 years the above are 2 totally different things!! lol

For the 1st when they were younger than 2 and not sleeping it was more about being in survival mode all the time.

I totally agree with this in theory-- but need help implementing this practically. I feel like I sweep my \kithchen floor 4 times a day at least bc its always a mess! And dishes always in the sink..!!!

Thank you all for the responses! I have to re-read them all in more detail once I find a few spare minutes, lol! Looking to get some tips and perhaps not feel like the only mom running around like a crazy person all the time! I don't know too many FTWM in real life so I really appreciate the responses!

I get home around 6:30, with the potential to be much later sometimes and for a few months of each year I have to log in at night for 3-4 hours!

I also have 3 kids not in school yet so evenings at home are hectic. They are in bed by nine but them its cleaning up, prepping for the next day, shower, iron outfit for myself, etc. I also do a 30 min DVD almost every night so this all wraps up around 11 pm and then I just sit for a while! Get up at 5 am and REPEAT!! :)

Re: Working Moms and Sleep... Or lack thereof

I'm on maternity leave now & I hardly sleep, I can only imagine when I go back to work it'll be even worse. When I went back to work after having my older ds, I seriously only slept 3 or 4 hours a night. It was bad & I was so run down, I hope I can do better this time. I really need close to 7 hours at least to feel good. I have to discipline myself to just go to sleep & forget other unimportant stuff.

So true! I wish my nights were filled with more relaxing things! I sometimes make things to eat for the next day at night. TV would be a better option!

I am a full-time working, single mother. So, yes I definitely feel like there aren't enough hours in the day but I try to make the most of the time I have. Sometimes it is definitely exhausting!

Monday thru Friday my son goes to daycare from about 7:30am until about 4:30pm. I work 8am-4pm those days. On a Sunday I will go food shopping for the week... I will buy all the fruit and veggies he needs, plus his protein (chicken, turkey, eggs, etc.), and then I usually make some homemade french toast and pancakes Sunday evening so that I have a hearty, easy to heat up breakfast for him each morning. So, that with some fruit each morning and it makes us able to get out the door a lot faster and he has a healthier breakfast because of it -- since usually the "quick" stuff isn't as healthy.

Each night I also set up his bag for daycare the night before - everything he needs goes in his backpack. Then, I pick out his clothes. I even fill his sippy cup with milk and put it in the fridge for the following morning. Anything I can get done ahead of time, I do. I even pick out my clothes.

I get up usually around 6am, shower fast, dry hair, get dressed. Then, he wakes up about 6:30am and I get him dressed, we go downstairs, let the dog out, he eats his breakfast, I eat mine and we are out the door by 7:15am to make it to daycare by 7:30am.

Then I go to work -- I try to get gas, or run to the bank, or things like that on my lunch if I can.

On my way home I pick up my son from daycare. We come home, take a tub right away so he's done - in PJ's and comfortable. Then, he plays with his toys while I make dinner for him and I. Again, I usually have food that is almost ready to go, just needs to be heated -- meatballs, grilled chicken, rice that's cooked, pasta, sauce, etc. We eat, then we go for a walk in our community (live in a condo) in the stroller around 6pm-6:30pm when the weather is nice. And he's usually in bed by 7pm - he's a great sleeper.

At that point, I usually do my DVD workout -- on the nights that my ex-DH has my son I go running or go to the gym.

I then do laundry. I'm usually in bed by 10pm because I do need a good amount of sleep to function at the rate I need to each day! LOL!

I'm usually in bed by 9-9:30 to watch some TV first or read my books.

HTH. It's a matter of getting into a routine, sticking to it, and doing as much ahead of time as possible.

ETA - the tricky part is cleaning for sure.

I finally broke down and got a cleaning lady when I got divorced because it is just me and it's not like I can hand off DS to my DH like I used to for an hour so I can go and clean.

So I hired someone to come every other Friday. So, twice a month on average - $60 each time. WORTH IT, BEYOND WORTH IT!!!!!

And in the meantime, just the little straightening up I can keep up on no problem -- the major and deep cleaning she does. So, it works.

I have help - DH and my mother - and some days I still don't feel like I can get it all done. I've thought before, 'what if it was just me'. I know we all step up when and how we have to - but you're doing it and sounds like your son has everything he needs/wants. So I just wanted to say, my hat is off to you....congrats on being an amazing model for your son.
