Thanks everyone. I do see both sides. No one has booked yet so we will see what happens.

Re: Family Vacation...and friends

oh and actually I totally forgot about what happened the last time. One of the family members had someone (they are the only ones who really knows this person) who was going to surprise them on this same family cruise. This person was so excited that they would do this. Things did not work out though so they could not come.

What is the difference then as the person told everyone when and where they were going and this person could have been on the same cruise and affected the "family time".

If no one has booked, I would tell your friends sorry but your family prefers the trip to be only family.

We have a friend who invited us on a Disney cruise with her entire family. We are very friendly with the extended family. The thing was that different parts of the family were covering different costs. i.e. her sister paid for the entire cruise. her mom paid for the Disney tix. I am sure there would be a lot of family meals where one family member would pick up the tab.

Honestly I did want to go but it just felt awkward. I really didn't feel it was our place to be there. Even if we had planned to go and if my friend came back and said that her family preferred to go alone, I would have been totally fine with it.

Now a group of 4 families is planning a Disney cruise trip for early 2016.

Couldn't you just plan a different trip with your friends?

I would be pretty annoyed if I were another family member on this trip. Inviting friends totally changes things, it's no longer about spending time with family and basically defeats the purpose.

I agree.

Re: Family Vacation...and friends

I haven't read all the comments, but I have done one of thsee family cruises and will be doing another this summer, and would never ask friends to join us. I'd love to cruise with friends another time, but this would not be the time for it.

Family Vacation...and friends

I feel like in a mixed setting with family and friends it's hard for family to "let their guard down" which is nice about a family only vacation.

Actually, no. We wouldn't be able to do 2 trips, money and time wise as well as the other families as we have been trying for a few years to get everyone together.

Actually I find the opposite with friends as I consider my friends family also.

Re: Family Vacation...and friends

My family has always been the more the merrier type .... That coupled with only being able to afford one vacation a year if that, I say the more the merrier my friends are always at family functions anyways so a vacation would be no different

If we planned a family trip I never would have even thought to invite friends.

This.

I keep my friends and family separate, generally speaking. When I am with my friends, I want to be with my friends. When I am with my family, I want to be with my family. I don't really see the need to mix the two but that's just me.

ETA - Reading back it seems like you invited these friends WITHOUT consulting your family first and IMO, that was VERY wrong. You planned a FAMILY vacation, you don't have a right to start inviting other people without FIRST discussing it with the people you initially planned the FAMILY vacation with.

I guess because I have always combined family and friends for things, I never though otherwise not to.
I never thought to discuss it with them as we established the last vacation that the only thing we really wanted to do together was dinner. The rest of the day was a free for all and we can do things together or separate.

Re: Family Vacation...and friends

It wouldn't bother me either way. If they feel their friends are close enough to celebrate then what is the big deal.
