They are all good districts. I grew up in Plainedge Schools which was one district over from Bethpage however, many Bethpage kids were zoned for Plainedge. They are both really good districts, you can't go wrong, and they are all very nice areas to raise a family. Chat Icon

Good School Districts....

All good, I would also add Massapequa, Wantagh and Seaford in that mix, along with Levittown (Kennedy HS). All in the same general area.

All that you mentioned are good.
I went to Syosset and it's considered top notch.
I just wasn't a fan of the snobbery in that district.
There were a lot of kids with a LOT of money who got expensive cars for their 16th birthday etc. A lot of "keeping up with the Jone's"
But as far as education- top notch.

Re: Good School Districts....

We really struggled deciding between Plainview- Old Bethpage and Syosset. Those were the only options for us after narrowing down from many (Plainedge, massapequa, seaford, etc) suggest looking at homes in both towns, go to open houses , and compare home prices.

We ultimately decided on POB, the neighborhood was much quieter than what we were finding in Syosset, the school districts are very close in comparison. We chose a house here over a comparable house in Syosset. Not an easy decision. Good luck and if you have any questions, FM me!

Be sure the house you chose is in the district you want, there are homes in Plainview In The bethpage district, for example.

I have a question for the ladies that graduated from Syosset. Were you happy with the education ? Are you in Syosset now? Of not, is it because you were unhappy with the schools? Besides the snobbery Chat Icon

I was very happy with the education. absolutely no complaints there. I also played sports and had great experiences with that.

I do not live in Syosset now. Partly because of the prices of homes and taxes and partly because I can't imagine dealing with the parents. A lot of people I went to high school with moved back there but I just wanted a change for me and my family.

my parents still live there and its a very nice town. to be honest I'd be more inclined to move back if I didn't have a daughter. I had a much harder time dealing with the "snobbery" than my brothers. I think because boys just don't care as much, but girls can get caught up in that nonsense. not what I want for my DD. although I know it happens everywhere!

I grew up in Woodbury and went to syosset. I thought my education was amazing. I graduated college early bc of it. Not only did I come into college with AP credits, I also came in with Syracuse credits. Syosset offers Syracuse classes in high school as well as AP.

I'm not in syosset now, but I'm very close by. Nothing at all to do with the school.

It was a great education. But I was also very studious and would have made the best of any school district I believe.
I am not there now because we got a LOT more for our money and taxes out in Suffolk.

ETA_ I graduated college a semester early as well- thanks to AP and Syracuse credits earned in Syosset HS

Re: Good School Districts....

Some important things to think about:
What percentage of school taxes are being supported by industry? Homeowners? Just because you pay higher school taxes as part of property taxes doesn't make a district better.

What percentage of graduates attended 4-year schools? Just because an area looks "nice" doesn't mean that the community overall shares your educational values. http://schools.newsday.com/long-island/graduates/gradafter/

How did the town (not township) vote politically in the last election? Do they share your political and social views as a community?

This was one of our target SD but decided I wouldn't be able to deal with this. The SD is top though.

It is. But now that I live elsewhere I am so much happier. I am kind of glad that my DD won't have to grow up with that. I really disliked a lot of people I went to school with.
Just not my value system..

Yes, I agree. Mine either. My SD is great but syosset SD is better though. We could have had a nicer house/larger property in Syosset than we ultimately bought but I prefer the "values/culture" of the town I chose.

OP, we seriously considered & have made offers on homes in areas you mentioned because the schools are all wonderful but grew weary of Bethpage due to the toxic plume (a big deal breaker for me)

Another question, if you chose not to live in Syosset (or similar) can you tell me where and why you decided to move? You can FM me too. We still wonder if we should have moved there! It was so hard (almost impossible) for us to choose between the 2 neighborhoods.

You should have seen me - OMG.

I dated a guy from Syosset, we were friends since like 9th grade, and he was a year older than me, or two years?? Something like that, and he had his senior prom... AT THE WALDORF ASTORIA.

So, here I am in my Estelle's Dressy Dresses for Less $99 Special that I had to babysit for to earn the money Chat Icon Anyway, here I am and they have this fancy limo and all of his friends are to the NINES -- and the girls, a lot of them went to designers and had their gowns MADE for them. And one girl's gown was from Italy.

And there's me, IN THE ESTELLE'S DRESS.
