Okay, I need the real-deal, no fuss list of what you have (if you already have a child) or what you will be putting in your hospital bag. I really don't want to over pack and have no idea what I'll actually use/need. Ready, set, go! Thanks, ladies Chat Icon

This is what I actually used:
*cord blood kit if you're doing it
*license and insurance card
Phone/charger
Camera/charger
Comfy clothes
Slippers
Flip flop for shower
Towel for shower
Makeup/shampoo/conditioner/toothbrush and paste/hair brush
I brought clothes for dd, but that isn't necessary
An extra bag to stock up on diapers (or if dh comes and goes he could just take them home)

Hospital Bag.....

I didn't even get to have a bag packed when I went in, but I sent DH home for the following items:

slippers
comfy pants
comfy shirt
comfy bra (all loose fitting)
comfy sneakers
socks
phone, charger, etc
computer/laptop/ipad/kindle (I had a lot of downtime in the hospital)
snacks for him
pajamas for him
changes of clothes for him
going home outfit for DS

That was it. I am not a make-up person, I had my headband and glasses, and I just wore the hospital gown for days and then I wore the disposable undies from the hospital. Granted, I had a c-section, so I was nervous to put anything else on...

Great lists, thanks everyone!

Did anyone get a nice/totally comfy robe/nightgown set or robe/PJs set to wear at the hospital?

Re: Hospital Bag.....

We had 2 bags - 1 bag for during labor and then 1 for after we were moved to the room that we just left in the car:

-2 pajamas
-Robe
-Slippers - I recommend ones that you do not have to slip on the backs of your feet...bending over will not be the easiest so slip ons are the best
-Large Water Bottle - you'll be thirsty afterwards and those little cups they give you don't give you much
-Boppy
-Phone Chargers
-Camera
-Portable Phone Charger...that didn't have to b e plugged into the wall
-Hair Ties
-Travel size toiletries
-wish I would have had a bigger towel but that wasn't that bad...took one shower while I was there and couldn't wait to take one at home

ETA: Any piece of clothing you bring and plan to wear for the first couple weeks plan on the high possibility of throwing out...or get black or dark blue if you're buying new.

I bought comfy pj pantand button down top set (easy for nursing) in black cotton from target.

I also bought a dark purple (you def want a dark color) plush robe, like in the NAP material. So so cozy.

Yes GREAT point to get dark. Thanks!! And yeah a button up PJ top is genius for nursing since I will take a little while to get used to my boobs out for all to see!! haha Chat Icon

I got a set like that from kohls. I love it and live in the robe part especially. I hate robes in general but since this one is just a top it's so comfy to sleep in so I can stay warm and nurse with no effort. The pants were also really loose so perfect for after a cs.

I didn't get to pack a bag at all so I had just the essentials that people brought me. A few nursing tanks, pj pants, hoodies, flip flops. Hands free pumping bra, basic toiletries, phone and charger, camelbak water bottle.

I brought a light robe. I was still hooked up to an IV when I was walking around so I was still in my hospital gown. It was nice to have something to cover me up.

I had an unplanned c-section and pants were really uncomfortable for me to put on and take off so i had to send my mom out to buy a couple of nightgowns. Warning- do not trust your mother to buy nightgowns...Chat Icon

Also i brought my own pads. The ones they give you in the hospital are huge and bulky and feel like a diaper. C-section or natural- you will be wearing pads for a little while afterwards.

Re: Hospital Bag.....

I was very happy to have a comfy pair of black pajama pants (like really light sweats) with me at the hospital. They better held the giant maxi pad in place against me, which was super important for how much I bled those first few days. If I'd only had a nightgown, it wouldn't have been as tightly in place and would have gotten messier, I think. Don't bring anything pretty. The chance of you bleeding on what you're wearing is really very high.

Besides that, I like the other things people have mentioned:
- laptop
- laptop / phone chargers
- shower stuff (incl. flip-flops)
- Boppy if you're planning on nursing (I didn't have this and just propped her up on pillows which was fine, but a Boppy would have been more comfortable)
- Nursing bra

That's about it. I just kind of laid there in my pajamas, staring at the baby for 2 days. And let people bring me tons of food.

Clothes. Toiletries. Phone computer and chargers.

I didn't buy anything new. One you are still Big and two you are bleeding. It's a waste of money IMO. You really don't need much.

I don't know why but this post made me think of my friend. She forgot underwear and had bought the Hanes granny panties but forgot to put them in her bag. After she had her son, she sent her husband home to bring her underwear. Well, dummy he is wasn't paying attention and brought her 5 pairs of thongs and a piece of lingerie.Chat Icon She was like what the hell are you thinking??? We still laugh about it now and her son is 6!Chat Icon

Hospital Bag.....

If you are having a c-section, or in case you do, bring a robe. Thank god I did. The first morning I wasn't clear to shower until 11am, 24 hours after I got out of recovery, but they wanted me to walk to get breakfast before they would let me shower. I didn't want to put on clothes without a shower and I had the hospital gown on with a hole in the back. So the robe made me feel much better about walking down the hall.

Also get big, comfie grannie pants (no bikini underwear, trust me). Also pads because they suction a lot of the blood out, so after the 2nd day I didn't need those mega pads they have in the hospital and it was nice to wear thinner, more comfortable ones. Also yoga pants to wear around the hospital and/or going home, because most maternity pants are stitched to the panels right at the incision area and even if you fit in your real pants they won't be comfortable. Nightgowns are good, I wore them after my myomectomy, which is same basic surgery, but I found them impractical with adding in a baby and nursing. I bought a comfie set of PJs with a nursing tank, which I did wear, but I ended up basically sleeping in my yoga pant and tanks most nights.

I brought my boppy but with the c-section incision it wasn't comfortable. I also brought my own pillow (in a obvious polka-dot cover so it didn't get mixed up with the hospitals) and blanket. The pillow was especially handy. It was more comfortable then the hospital one and freed up the hospital one to support my arm when I was holding the baby or nursing, since the boppy wasn't working to well.

C-section or not… bring slippers with a good grip on the bottom so you don't have to run around in the ugly socks they give you. Also flip flops for the shower, one thing I forgot and sent DH home for. And light makeup and a mirror because if you have family like mine your going to be in way more pics then you want to be with no makeup on.

At the advice of a friend I also packed a Tervis Tumbler (big water cup). She warned me that Southside gave you your own pitcher of ice water and a tiny cup, so you constantly have to refill it and its a pain. So I brought my own cup with a straw so I could happily drink out of it for a while.

Re: Hospital Bag.....

Last time I brought so much stuff that I ended up not using.

What I really used...

hair ties & clips to keep my hair away from my face
flip flops for the shower & just walking around
comfy elastic waist pants
comfy shirts
hoodie
sports bras or nursing bras
granny panties to come home in (they give you the mesh ones for the hospital but needed something heavier once I was leaving)
deodorant & your own shampoo/body wash
makeup

kindle, charger, cell phone
camera (we are big on taking a million pics so our phones didn't cut it)

insurance card, ID, doc's phone #, any other important paperwork, cash
cord blood kit if you are banking
breast pump/supplies if you plan to use one

outfit for the baby to come home in
blanket for the baby for the ride home
pacifiers if you plan to use them
mittens for the baby's hands!! This ended up being soooo important for us because his hands were flying everywhere & it scared me that he'd scratch his face or eyes

If I think of more stuff, I'll edit & add.... but off the top of my head these were all really essential

Re: Hospital Bag.....

Here's my List:

*Robe
*2-3 prs of Loose pajama pants that you don't mind tossing if they get ruined(Old Navy has some good cheapies)
*2-3 Nursing Tanks if you're nursing(Pea In a Pod has great ones)
* Slippers(after my csection my feet swelled so I couldn't fit them, but if you are having a vaginal delivery they may work for you)
*Flip Flops for the shower and to walk around in if you swell like me post csection
* Pack of Granny Panties(stayed in the mesh undies except the day I went home but not everyone likes the mesh so just in case)
* Sanitary Napkins(hospital ones are great but after the first day or so with all my Csections I wasn't bleeding too heavy so I switched)
*Socks
* Nursing Bra(to wear home; didn't wear one in the hospital since my nursing tanks had built in cups)
* flat iron(my hair frizzes after washing so this is a must for me)
*hair dryer(LIJ and NSUH Manhasset has one)
*Bath towel (hospital ones are small)
* bag for dirty clothes
* going home outfit(wore a Maxi dress last time{a maternity one} plan on wearing it again this time)
* Pillow(hospital ones are like plastic)
*Toiletries and make up
*camera w/charger plus cell phone chargers and a small extension cord( outlet was on the other side of the room)
*boppy, nursing pads, lansinoh
*Belly Bandit(to bind your tummy)
*going home outfit for baby
* blanket for baby
*pacifier(most hospitals don't give them out)
*snacks (last time I delivered at LIJ the food sucked; had to send DH to Au Bon Pain for food which got expensive after a while)

Def bring lose pants and a soft lose top (with buttons I found worked best). I had an unplanned c section and yoga pants were not at all acomfy on me. Luckily I packed a pair of cotton sweats. I practically lived in them during my stay. Also pack snacks for yourself and husband if he's staying. I brought a nursing cover too, helped out a lot when I had visitors. I packed granny panties but found the mesh underwear provided by the hospital to be the best.

Oh and I recommend bringing Coconut Oil for your nipples lol. I sent my mom to Trader Joes for that on day two. Found it worked better for me than Lanisoh.

What I used:

Juicy pants and a regular t shirt for the hospital
Hair band
Phone/charger
Pillow
Camera
Flip flops
Nursing bra
Clothes for dh
I went home in a maxi dress

An outfit each day for dd-I've never dressed her in onesies, even in the hospital

Although I meant to bring the boppy and it would have been useful, DH forgot it at home since I decided to wait until I was ready to push before leaving our house

My list is simpler:

Music (speakers & playlist). This calms everyone down & gives you something else to focus on when pushing. Docs loved it too.

Camera.

Phone & charger.

Brush & hair straightener (I used their shampoo)

Light makeup (just to prevent you from looking sleepy).

Extra contacts

I used hospital gowns, their socks & underwear.

My coming home outfit: maternity pants & shirt.

Baby coming home outfit: sleep n play.

Just got home fro the hospital on Friday. I was there for 4 days total. I used:

One outfit for me, loose pants and shirt, the first 2'days I was in the hospital gown ( had a c section)
Coming home outfit for me and DD
Face wash
Toothbrush
Soap
Flip flops for shower

Wish I brought a robe and larger bag to take extra formula and diapers in. The nurse gave me extra and made me put it in my bag so no one would see and I barely had any room.
