Update: Allergy to amoxicillin - what drug worked for ear infection

UPDATE: They checked his ears. They're still swollen but look like they are getting better. Dr said he might just be sensitive to antibiotics and that is causing the rash. Thanks for the advice. He has a follow up next week.

As I wrote in the other post, DS developed a rash when he was on amoxicillin. The dr prescribed azithromycin for his ear infection. Needless to say, I'm pretty sure it did not work and he still has an ear infection.

What antibiotic worked for your LO (if they couldn't take amoxicillin)? I also read augmentin is amoxicillin plus another drug so that's out.

When my ds had recurrent ear infections, he moved from amoxicillin to augmentin to cefdinir.

Are you sure that he's allergirc to ammox? I ask because DD broke out in hives after strep throat and ammox. We thought she was allergic and had her tested by an allergist. They told us that something crazy like 80% of all people who think they're allergic are not. We had her tested and found out that's she not allergic at all. The hives were a reaction to the strep throat and not to the medicine. You may want to have him tested to make sure that it's a true allergy. It's tough when they can't take ammoxicillin.

According to dr, it could be an allergy or it could be from the fever he had. He looked MUCH better after one dose of Benadryl. After taking Benadryl every 6 hours for 24 hours, the rash was almost entirely gone. That's why I'm thinking it was a reaction to the medicine. I originally thought it might be roseola...

Eta: I'll ask his pediatrician for a recommendation for an allergist.

Have you tried the hylands ear infection medication? It is OTC. My son had recurrent ear infections and a bad reaction to the amox as well. A warmed garlic clove near his ear and the hylands was what finally worked.

Rashes/hives are a side effect of Amoxicillin... It happens to a lot of kids...

Zithromyacin (sp?).

We also tried Cefdinir but it caused awful explosive reddish diarrhea for weeks. Next EI, I asked for something else and got the zithromyacin.

My dd had similar situation. At 15 mos she broke out into head to toe non itchy hives on day 5 of 10 of amoxicillin from ear infection. Ped assumed she had penicillin allergy, and for the next 3 yrs she could only take Zithromax for antibiotic, not penicillin drugs. I never believed she was truly allergic, and most kids who are diagnosed with a penicillin allergy don't truly have one. Our allergist also said same thing.
Last month (she's 4 now), she had a nasty cough and ear infection which didn't respond to zithromax. I spoke to ped, she agreed to try her on amox (Augmentin) again. And wouldn't you know it, zero reaction and was fine. No penicillin allergy as suspected .
Get your DC tested. Zithromax tastes horrible in comparison to penicillin drugs. Plus, you're omitting countless penicillin based antibiotics he can take for a variety of illnesses.

(I think my dd had Roseola rash at that time. It looks exactly like it. What did the rash look like? )

He had a rash before antibiotics but it got so much worse after he started them.

Today, he woke up with another rash and a low grade fever. Calling the dr once we get on the road.

I am allergic to amoxicillin and we have always had success with a Z-pak. They have different strengths so you can cater to the patients age/weight/issue..

Augmentin has amox in it. Zithromax (azithromycin, AKA z-pak) to me is not very effective, and it actually can loose efficacy over time and use. Maybe ask about Ceftin, Cipro (though usually used more for UTI's and other infections). There's also the Omnicef, which works very well for me.

Both of my boys had the non-allergic rash about 5 days into taking amoxicillin. As a precaution, the doctor considers them allergic. DS1 has only had 2 ear infections. DS2 usually gets azithromycin. He's allergic to cefdinir.
