So freaked out update
Doorbell rang a few times at 5:45 am. Strange man, appeared Hispanic. We didn't open door. Man went into parked SUV where another man was in car and sat staring at our house 10+ mins.
I got freaked and called cops. Men drove off, not stopping anywhere else. I live in a small cul de sac.
Cops show up 2 mins later by which time a second (different) car was out front. They told cops they were shovelers. They drove away when cops yelled at them.
We have almost no sidewalk as front is curved. They didn't go to any other house and why so early?
You think I'm paranoid?!
Update:
So I emailed previous owner since we didn't live here last year. She did use some guys for shoveling so I'm hoping they targeted my house thinking we are good customers. The timing and 2 cars is still strange but I'm going to hope that's all it was. I do feel bad if they were honest guys looking to make a buck, but they should come back in daylight!
I am of the mindset if someone wants to do you harm, they will - if they wanted to break in, they could have busted a glass door or something. I try not to be paranoid but this morning really freaked me.

They always come around my house too. Its so annoying especially when the kids are sleeping and they are knocking at the door.

If this happened at 8 I prob would have answered and not been afraid.

I think anyone would be freaked out at a stranger ringing their bell at 5:45 am! That's crazy.
Glad the cops got them out of there.

That would frewk me out too. And this is why I never open the door for anyone I am not expecting. Shovelers? Maybe? Or maybe at 545am in the snow it's a good time for a home invasion. People are sick these days. You did the right thing.
And PS extremely odd a second car came back. Shovelers are looking to shovel snow and fast and make money.

Maybe they wanted to get shoveling jobs before some of the snow melts?
The time is ridiculous, but they probably were shovelers.

I would say cautious rather then paranoid. You did the right thing.
5:45 I would be super pissed if someone rang my doorbell.
I normally don't answer at any time if I am not expecting anyone.

While I can see how they might have been shovelers looking to make a quick buck before the rain moved in and did the job for them, I never answer the door to anyone ever. 545 am or 1245 pm.
I don't even have a door bell anymore. If you need me, call me. If you show up on my doorstep unexpected I won't answer.

5:45 is crazy. I would be pissed. The shovelers just rang my bell at 8 and woke up me and m newborn after it took me 2 hours to get him to sleep. Not happy. They rang several times and theny dog was barking. Annoying.

I saw this morning someone posted on a local group that the same thing happened to them. I think it was Bellmore-Merrick-Wantagh group. Is this a new scam we should be worried about?
I never answer my door if my husband is not home! Too many crazies out there!

Why is a description of the guy that rang her bell at a strange time and freaked her out not relevant?
Maybe the same guy did something similar to someone else in the area and he was confirmed harmless? Maybe a guy matching that description did commit a crime that day?

It was too dark to see the license plate or type of car (other than black small SUV). This was the only identifying info I really had. That's all that was meant by that. If they appeared white or African American or alien then I would have wrote that. Certainly didn't mean any offense and I would have been equally freaked regardless of race. Although probably even more scared if alien :).
Karma's a B. If they were just nice snow shovelers we totally need them for Tues and I'm sure they won't be coming back!
