Negotiating at car dealer help.

We usually finance our vehicles but finally able to buy one cash. However we have a budget in the low 20s. We found a few certified preowned volvos and Audis that I like. If a car was 24-26K what realistically would you offer?

I would Kelley Blue Book it and determine the value of the car first. Go from there.

Agree- also check Galves, a lot of dealers use that as a guide for pricing

Check out KBB and Edmunds to see what a fair price is for the vehicles you're considering. Also, print out that info and bring it with you. The best way to get a good price on a car is to be armed with knowledge. The more you know about the car, it's features, and it's pricing the better you will make out. Good luck!! Chat Icon

Also agree. Be prepared, though, that not all car dealerships consider cash deals a plus. They make a lot of money through financing, so you may get some pressure from the finance person. Certainly this won't happen everywhere, but just something to keep in mind in case it comes up.

I've bought my last 2 cars brand new outright. I financed because I got the best deal doing that. (As a pp said, the dealership makes a lot of money on the financing.) I paid off the car within a week. I offered cash and they said financing was cheaper- they also asked me to wait to pay it off...that wasn't happening! Ask if cash or financing would give you a better price!

This is so true. I did the same thing since that's the only way you really get a deal financing and paying it off right after. I think I paid it off within 2 weeks.

With that said, I had been looking for months and I knew it was still a good price considering how low the mileage was and the fact that it had all the extra gels and whistles I wanted.

My DH is in the car industry directly working with dealerships and the fact of the matter is, it depends on a lot of factors: what they paid for the car, how much the dealership needs to make a quota on their preowned cars that particular month, and which salesman you get. With that said, if you come armed with knowledge and you're a good negotiator, you can get them to come down to a point where you're getting a good deal and they might lose some money on this car but they will just make it up on the sale of another vehicle later in the month.

the newer styles have less give room the first year or two (such as when the new style CRV came out, took 2 ish years to get "deals")

the actual price listed doesn't impact how much they'll come down. Dealers have different pricing stratagies. It also depends on how much they bought it for, how long they've held it, when they will send it to aucution if they need to move it, where they are on their quotas etc.

Look at a bunch of them online, look at Edmunds, NADA etc. Look at sold auctions on Ebay. And figure out what you think its worth and negotiate from there.

Some cars priced at 20K have $500 of wiggle room, and some have $4000

We got three new vehicles in 2014 and I found the information I read on the forums at Edmunds.com was very helpful. I save a lot on each car.

My DH had negotiated a sale price on his new truck, I came back with info from Truecar and Edmunds and got another $1500 taken off, albeit grudgingly. DH was amazed, and somewhat embarrassed that I did so well.

I got involved with the next two vehicles, which we leased, and got excellent prices, below what truecar said we should get. Reading through Edmunds forums taught me a lot and that gave me the confidence to ask for better prices based on what I had learned. It also helped me not be intimidated by salesmen. I actually saw jaws drop open when I started asking certain questions related to leasing. Clearly, they didn't expect a woman to ask them.

I know it sounds obnoxious but like the PP said there are sooooooo many factors into pricing out used cars....... Way too many to explain !!

I'm in the business too, and the last few weeks I've kinda stopped commenting on these posts because as many times as I explain what goes into a deal and how pricing works, money factors and all that people just don't get it. It is refreshing when someone takes your advice or really understands that its not as simple as everyone thinks...

You know what I HATE the most is when consumers have this preconceived notion that there is thousands of dollars in markup on cars ..... It's very frustrating , especially since all the information under the sun including invoice on the cars are on the internet !!!!!!!
