For anyone who said they wont give the vaccine, I'm interested if you can expand on the reasons why. I received it in my 20s and although my DD is young, will most likely have her get it. But I'm curious to hear reasons against it...

Supposedly it goes after only 4 strand of the 40 DETECTED cancers. There is no real solid proof that it curses against cancer.

Hpv is a virus that COULD cause cancer. Just because you have it doesn't mean you will get cancer. Also you can be tested for hpv test negative but really have the virus laying dormant in your body. You can test positive for it but then years later test negative. They estimate about 70p of women over age 27 have it. Even if it's laying dormant in your body. If you tested positive through diet and exercise you can get it to lay dormant. Smoking cigarettes is one if the worst things you can do.

If you've ever have genital herpes or have had genital warts you have hpv. If you keep yourself in good health you can get it to go dormant.

Google deaths or injury from this vaccine. It can cause paralysis and Guillain-Barré syndrome symptoms. I will take my chances.

So I wonder if they will even give it to you if you have already been sexually active. Because it wouldn't make sense to get the vaccine if you've already been exposed to HPV.

I will tell my story. I was told I had HPV back in 2005. Basically the kind I have can cause cervical cancer. This is why women go to see the GYN every year for check ups and PAP smears. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Because they can catch the abnormal cells and get rid of them before they turn into cancer. I had a procedure in 2005 to take care of some that I had. I had to go back every 6 months for a pap after that. Once I went 5 years with clear paps, I was back to the once a year schedule.

At this point, my HPV has been undetectable for years. And they have recently changed the recommendations for pap smears to every 3 years. My doctor told me a negative HPV test is more reliable than yearly paps. If you don't show HPV, they say you only need a pap every 3 years.

To be quite honest, I haven't made my decision about this vaccine and my children. I would love for my DD to not have to go through what I went through...but I'm not sure how I feel about the possible risks. And I am also very pro-vaccine when it comes to everything else.

They tried to give it to me when I was about 25 and said I had until I was 26 before they wouldn't give to me. It was a series of 3 shots like a month apart. I denied it. Had been having sex for years already anyway.

My kids will not recieve the HPV vaccine and I have HPV.

No way will I let my daughter get that shot. I had HPV. Still no

They tried to make it a legal requirement here in Texas. They had to backtrack due to the cases that piled up.

On February 2, 2007, Texas became the first state to enact a mandate-by executive order from the governor-that all females entering the sixth grade receive the vaccine, with some exceptions. Legislators in Texas passed H.B. 1098 to override the executive order and the governor withheld his veto.

My ex coworker's daughter suffers horribly from its effects. The first few years were ok but by the time she was in HS she'd been to the Mayo clinic twice!

We always say no to the flu shot and honestly no one blinks twice about it.

Thanks for all of the responses. I will look into the links and google the information you've given me. I'm still more no (like my husband and SS) than yes, but will try to do my due diligence this weekend. :)

HPV vaccine

I got it when I was in my early 20's when it very first came out. At the time I believe it was mostly teens who got it, and only girls. I didn't have any side effects.

While I agree HPV is very widespread and the chances of getting cervical cancer are slim for anyone getting regular paps, HPV can often lead to colposcopies, biopsies and other procedures that aren't necessarily dangerous but uncomfortable and scary. It's also worth nothing that condoms don't always prevent HPV.

For males, I don't believe they show any symptoms, they can just pass the virus along.

I'm not advocating one way or the other, just wanted to say cervical cancer isn't the only concern!

Re: HPV vaccine

My Dr told me that they see abnormal paps due to other HPV strains in a lot of women that got the vaccine, so the vaccine is useless in my eyes.

If I could go back I wouldn't get the vaccine since it only protects against 4 strains of HPV when there are literally around 100 strains. I just want to add that the long term effects of the vaccine haven't been studied sufficiently IMO.

If you want to read more about the different strains just google "HPV Strains"

This page has a decent amount of info about it:

I'm a dental professional and I strongly believe all children should be given the HPV vaccine. HPV is directly tied to oral cancer which is more deadly than cervical cancer and prostate cancer. The majority of people being diagnosed with oral cancer today are 24-36 years old, no smokers due to exposure to HPV which is sexually transmitted. It's affects the genitals, but also the oral cavity.
I'm on the fence about the flu shots and other vaccines but I have seen so many young people recently diagnosed with the HPV/oral cancer link.
No cancer is good or easy but oral cancer is especially vicious

Are there any reputable resources aside from the CDC and AAP? He suggested I read those, but I'd like to find other resources that aren't necessarily tied to these vaccines monetarily.

Thanks

I'm a pediatric subspecialist, for what it's worth and fully support the CDC ACIP vaccine schedule. It's pretty much a no brainer from a risk benefit standpoint and like most of us in the field am in awe at the public hesitancy to vaccinate.

I'm curious about the CDC and AAP being tied to the vaccines "monetarily".

The CDC is a government agency so it primarily receives funding from our taxes.

AAP is nonprofit and it's pretty easy to research where their funding comes from (mostly from pediatricians who are members).

Just to put my "money where my mouth is" my kids get the full vaccine schedule as recommended above w/o exception. They both will get the flu shot this year. When they are old enough they will get the HPV vaccine.

Sorry, but do you have sources? Just because something is banned doesn't mean it is harmful, i.e. perhaps pressure caused the ban, etc.

Just a little more information--the original vaccine was fast tracked because it met a previously "un-met need", meaning it offered protection against some of the strains of HPV that could cause cervical cancer. There are 12 strains that are "highly likely" to cause cervical cancer, and the vaccines protected against 2 out of the 12.

The issue with the 140 deaths reported to the VAERS is that there is no link to causality. If you read the through the reports, you'll find that many of the deaths were ruled accidental (car accidents, pre-existing conditions, etc) and are still reported to VAERS.

With all that being said, I still haven't made my decision as to what I'm going to do when it comes time for my little girl.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

My kids are too young for hpv so I have years to decide, but if it were today, I would not give them the hpv vax. And I am very, very pro vaccination. My whole family gets every vax there is, and we require our nanny to get flu shots. (And the whooping cough vax). I've generally read some negative things about the hpv vax, but have not discussed with any trusted sources because it will change 100 times by the time I need to decide. That said, because it seems there may be some dangers, and because it's transmitted by sex, not sharing cups, etc, I think it's a decision my adult child will need to make for herself. Or at least discuss with me and decide together.

HPV vaccine

I did get the HPV vaccine ,but if I had to do it over I don't know if I would make the same choice. I was much younger and went along with what the doctor said without researching. It only protects against the three most common strains of HPV. I know plenty of people who got it and still had cervical changes /lesions that tested positive for HPV. Fwiw, I had no side effects. I don't know if I would give it my child. I do not get the flu shot, nor will my child.

Quoting from the CDC's website is obviously going to be completely biased.

If you go to the side bar you can read real life peoples stories. A lot of these stories say the child felt sick after the first, worse after the second, and devastating effects after the third. At the very least if you notice these side effects after the first or second vaccine maybe stop and don't have the third administered.

I personally think it is great if we all read both sides, the cdcs info along with other true real life accounts and then make an educated decision.

With all due respect to the prior poster. If you go here:
Truth about Gardasil

and look at the last line of the website it says: Copyright © 2014 The Truth About Gardasil. All Rights Reserved | Sponsored by Florida Wildlife Trapper

If you click on the sponsor this is where you are taken: Florida Wildlife Trapper

I think I'd rather take my advice from folks who work at the CDC than site sponsored by a company that does nusiance wildlife removal!

Bottom line is that people have died after receiving Gardasil. People have died after a lot of things. Correlation does not imply causation.

Here's the journal article about Gardasil for those who want to get into the science:

This is absolutely correct. I work in the field (though not vaccines specifically, but FDA reporting requirements are similar) and you have to report EVERYTHING. The FDA is not twiddling their thumbs. There are rules for the rules and then more rules governing those rules- and even that is an understatement.

It doesn't matter. You can google and find plenty of other sites that are not sponsored by Floridian wildlife trappers. I was merely presenting that there is additional information out there showing another side of the hpv vac.
