Has anyone potty trained their DC very young? We did the 3 day method with DD1 at 25 months and I thought that was pretty young, but DD2 is 16 months and always asks to use the potty - she goes into the bathroom and gets DD1's potty, puts in on the seat and says "pee." We have had 4 pees on the potty in 2 days. Of course there are many more in the diaper than on the potty, but since she seems so interested, I was wondering if anyone has successfully trained their DC that young. If so, what was your method? Thanks!

Re: VERY Young Potty Training

From what I remember, the 3 day potty training method is recommended for kids between 18-24 months. The problem may be that she doesn't yet have the physical control to hold it for periods of time. But because she is showing an interest, I don't think 16 months is *too* young to at least give it a shot. It can't hurt to try. Kids that young definitely can be trained.

Starting training my youngest dd at 17 months. By 18 months she was accident free. She just loved the potty plus she had a big sister she wanted to be just like. She was completely conversational at that age too so she was able to tell me when she needed to use the potty. I just kept putting her on the potty and than put her in undies it took a few days but than it all clicked.

Thanks. I just looked at the 3 day book and it recommends waiting until 22 months, even if they show the signs of readiness earlier. I will wait a few more months at least to push it and for now just let her lead. I would love to stop paying for diapers sooner than later, and I would love to stop changing diapers!

Well, just from another perspective, in many MANY other cultures, babies are potty trained around 1 - 1.5 years old. I mean, they're not expected to hold their pee/poo for long, but they are taught to signal that they have to go, and then hold it in until they are in the right place to release. My sister was trained at 12 months, and I was trained at 18 months (my mom said I was older b/c she was busier with two kids). Potty training further into the toddler years is a distinctly US/Western cultural thing, which is totally fine. I just wanted to point out that it is physically/psychologically possible for your daughter to be potty-trained now, so you don't have to force yourself to hold off. Whatever you are comfortable with.

Thanks. I did read that a few years ago, and will do a little more searching on the topic.

I don't know if there are multiple versions but mine says the recommended age is "at least 18 months but not more than 24 months".

Maybe - the book I have says wait until 22 months, even if they show signs of readiness sooner. I am going to look at other methods though - I def don't think a 16 month old is ready for the 3 day method!

Re: VERY Young Potty Training

I was potty trained at 14 months. My mom was using cloth diapers... she says I was waking up dry & giving an indication when I wanted to pee. She also hated cloth diapers (couldn't afford disposables) & liked us to go around naked in the house... so I imagine the method was similar to 3 day in terms of just keeping kid naked & directing pee into potty.

I potty trained DS at 26 months (3 day method) but I thought he was too old. I was told by family & DH that I was crazy trying so young.

Potty trained DD at 22 months (because that's when I had a 3 day weekend). She trained in a day. We started the 3 day method... but she got it day 1. Maybe I could have trained her earlier, but I just didn't have the time. Def easier at 22 than 26 months.

Honestly, I would say go for it. It is a cultural thing to wait til the kid is so old.

My first two are 13 months apart so the younger one really latched onto what the older one was doing. She started using the potty we had for my older daughter on her own. I just kept it around and she would use it when she wanted. At 2, I just stopped using pull ups. She had a few accidents the first month, but then she was all set. She was potty trained for number 2 very early...I think around 18 mths.

Thanks! That's awesome that she learned on her own!

How do you actually potty train. My dd shows interest and sits on her potty a lot but usually goes on the floor. She tells me when she poops and a few times told me she did. But my dry and then a few minutes later actually went. So id like to train her but don't know how to start!

I was going to ask the same thing. What is the 3 day method? My LO is 25 months. Is that to late to use this method

I was wondering this too. My daughter is 15 months and goes on the potty a lot, but I'm not sure if she's old enough to officially "potty train"?

I am going to continue to encourage my DD to let me know when she has to go and I will keep putting her on the potty, but I am going to hold off on the "training" for a few months until she is definitely ready to hold it long enough.

That is when I did it for DD1 - definitely not too late.
