Talk to me about Bethpage and the toxic plume

OK so I have done some research and I know that there is a toxic plume in Bethpage and some cleanup has been done in regards to the water. I know that in general on LI there are a few plumes however from my understanding the Grumman site is one of the worst on the island.

I also know that there is still much debate about the plume and how/if it caused increased rates of cancer and autoimmune disorders however, how much of that is relevant to past residents as opposed to current/future residents? I guess what I'm trying to ask is are there still reasons to be concerned about the environmental conditions in the Bethpage area?

Yesterday DH and I saw a house in the numbered streets that we really fell in love with. We debated making an offer but then I starting reading that that area is probably the most affected by the plume. While we loved the house, I sure don't want to buy something that can sicken my family. Anyone have deeper insight to this or more knowledge that can guide me? Thanks.

Re: Talk to me about Bethpage and the toxic plume

My friend in Plainedge has 3 neighbors on her block that are all under 40 and diagnosed with cancer. They've been drilling in her neighborhood for about 6 months. That to me speaks for itself. I personally would stay FAR away from any area with toxic plumes and the surrounding towns. We left south Massapequa and moved to another town because it's traveling south.

Yes, I agree with PP. Two years ago, when we began this ever lasting home search, we thought that Bethpage, Plainview would be our future neighborhoods but thankfully the sale of our place took longer than expected, giving us time to discover the cancer ties to bethpage & how it's traveling south. I couldn't live in those areas.

Here is an interesting article. Toxic Plume I also follow the Bethpage Cancer Project on FB. Check it out.

Oh yes, A LOT of them. I'll see if I can pull up the website. Bayshore and Bethpage are the worst. Also, the cancer rates are higher out east than in the city, queens and Nassau because of the pesticides from all the farms.

Look up Long Island superfund sites and you'll get some hits. Here's a map of them all:

This is very interesting, thanks!

Do you know of any private agencies that will test a home's water in order to find out what chemicals are in the water?

Every district runs several hundred tests each year and usually posts them on their website. I believe you can also have a sample from your house tested from the district for free. I got a whole house carbon filter and reverse osmosis for the sink because the water on Long Island is so bad.

Be careful wtih this knowledge because the company you get water from is different (as far as i know). I met people from england that worked on the NYS aquaphor system and they told me that NYS upstate water is the cleanest in the world, which some districts are using. so, it depends on where the water is coming from, stored, etc...

ETA: i am not saying, by any means, that any water on long island is clean, i am just saying some are cleaner than others. it's not "long island" as an entirety.

There are "pockets" of cancer rates, specifically the block my parents live on. all the ladies except my mother within a five house radius had / has breast cancer. is it because somebody has an oil tank leak? or some other "thing" in their ecosystem? could be. maybe it's the water.

I have a co-worker that has lived in bethpage (number streets) for over 20 yrs. Hes had varieties of different skin cancers, prostate cancer, thyroid cancer and multiple other illnesses. Some would say coincidence but im too paranoid to agree.

Thanks everyone this info is very helpful. We have our eyes on quite a few areas in Nassau so we think we are going to pass on this house and keep looking. With all the info I read and the feedback from here I didn't feel comfortable making an offer

I feel awful for the people not only dealing with this in Bethpage and the implications on their health but also not being able to sell their homes because of it. Double whammy. Chat Icon

That's a great resource because it gives so much good information about the impact and the years of the cleanup.

I saw something similar when we were looking for houses, and there's a couple closeby but nothing recent or affecting houses in my area. It does make me feel marginally better.
