Late talkers
DD just turned 16 months and says very few words. She does makes eye contact, responds to her name, and loves being around and watching kids. She has always done things a little bit later than the usual milestones. Ped said to wait til 18 months to have her evaluated if she is not talking, especially because she hit her other milestones a bit later. Just wanted an idea of others that did start talking, just a bit later.

When we went for her 15 month well visit, her ped said she should have over 20 words by 18 months. I said ''no way", because at that point, she only had like 5 words or so. But, sure enough, by the time she hit 18 months. she was saying SO many words. I feel like it happens overnight. One day, they just start.

My DS didn't really start saying much until he was close to 2. I was concerned and called EI but they told me under 2, they only want them to have 5 words. At 16 months I really would try not to worry about it. She's still very young.

DS is 2 and says about 6-7 words. I am just now having him evaluated by EI. 16 months is still young, I think.

Agree with the others. 16 months is still young. I have been told 10-20 words by 24 months, so you still have a bit of time.

If she has strong receptive listening EI would not qualify her. We had to wait until ds was 2 to qualify for speech since his receptive skills were so strong. We had him evaulated at 18 months and didn't qualify.

you dont realize what a difference 2 months can make...and she is already saying a few words...wait till she is 18 months...i personally dont believe in waiting till 2...there is no harm in doing it and if it had to get done again at 2, they will do it.

My dd was only saying a handful of words at 18m... She could understand everything I was saying to her but couldn't express herself in words. I decided to wait on EI until she was 2.... Then she had a word explosion at around 23m.... From what I hear, unless they can't understand you, EI will tell you to wait until 2 to evaluate.

I work in EI and swore my DS would need speech. At 17 months he rarely had any words. As long as he/she is babbling and making vowel sounds you are well on your way. At 20 months old my son just started using real words. There are definitely warning signs but it sounds as if your DD has sounds and that is most important. EI is free either way,but I would wait because she won't qualify at this age if she has sounds.

DS was about 27 months when he really started talking. He understood everything you said to him, could follow 2 step commands, etc. My Ped said that was more important. He expressed himself through gestures and had a few words. At 27 months he exploded! Now at 3.5 he has clear thoughts and sentences.
