Moms of infants with food allergies

Did your child under 1 yr old get tested by the scratch test or blood work? Did you feel it was accurate? Thanks!

My DD had the scratch test done on her back at just over 10 months and the blood work too. I went in there expecting one result and cane out with something totally different (was expecting a gluten allergy but turns out it is an egg allergy) the Dr told me that she can have foods with low concentrations of eggs, just not whole eggs or anything with a higher concentration. I feel that its accurate for my DD. when she eats too much of certain foods that have a moderate concentration she has a reaction. Ihave learned to be more careful though (she's almost 16 months now) in a few more months I have to bring her to the allergist to do a tolerance test to see how she reacts to whole egg (and I'm scared out of my mind yo do so! But its the only way to know what will happen) I also want to test her for a few other things that I have noticed she reacts to if eaten too much (strawberries for one)

Re: Moms of infants with food allergies

My son had a milk protein and soy allergy from birth. They only did stool samples. The pedi GI told us that most allergists won't do testing unless there is a severe allergic reaction in kids under 2-3 years old because there are too many false readings.. My son was 3 when we did the skin test. Still allergic to soy. He outgrew the milk allergy by 15 months old. We did blood work at 3.5 and it didn't show the soy allergy but the skin test did. He goes back next month for more tests. He is also allergic to peanuts.

Re: Moms of infants with food allergies

I brought my DS a few weeks ago at 8 months old. I suspected a milk allergy as he was covered in ezcema and his face turn bright red the 3 times I gave him yogurt. They did the scratch test on his back for all of the most common allergies in kids. It turned out he was not allergic to milk, but allergic to peanuts, eggs, cats and dogs. Thus far the only thing he has been exposed to was dogs. They gave me a RX for blood work to follow up with to make sure they weren't false positives. The blood work mirrored the scratch testing. He got RAST scores of 3 for peanuts and tree nuts, eggs and dogs. Which is considered highly allergic. He got a 4 for cats which is severely allergic. I was told to keep him away from all nuts, I have to bring him back when he's a little older to do a food challenge with eggs and to vacuum 3-4 times per week since we have a dog. The testing tells how likely you are to have a reaction to an allergen, not what kind if reaction you might gve (rash vs Anaphalxsis )...

DD was blood tested at 8mo for a suspected milk allergy. The test came back positive for milk and also a slew of other allergies, none of which we thought were accurate (her allergist also agreed).

She went back to the allergist 6mo after her initial blood work for the scratch test and we will go back again in a few months for another scratch re-test. He is only treating her for a dairy allergy.

Re: Moms of infants with food allergies

Around 8 months, we had the blood work and scratch test done for a suspected egg allergy. Both came back positive (severe)

DS has to be tested for egg aty his next appt - he will be one. If I'm thinking correctly the scratch test is itchy and annoying afterwards. Did you have to give anything for comfort or were they ok?

DS is 15 months with a strawberry allergy. Ped said there was no point in having his tested this young. We'll wait and see if he outgrows it first.

Blood test and I felt it was accurate. Retesting in one year for peanut/tree nut.
