PGD and insurance

Hi everyone, waiting to hear from insurance over whether they will pay for IVF with PGD. Was wondering how long it took for others to hear from insurance?
Also, was wondering if others could share their experience with PGD. We would be looking at PGD for a single gene disorder. A lot of the PGD jargon is confusing to me.
Thanks ! ??

Re: PGD and insurance

PGD was not covered by my insurance (Empire). It was about 5K, totally out of pocket.

I know there are posters here who really benefited from PGD testing. Unfortunately, while we had 3/4 of our embryos come back as "normal", none implanted. I had three separate transfers. I had other undiagnosed issues at the time that affected implantation (my RE wasn't looking into them).

The hardest part of PGD for me was the time frame. I was not a huge producer of eggs, and your embryos have to make it to Day 5 to even undergo PGD. As a result, it took three cycles to batch and freeze in order to get enough embryos to test. My RE did not make it clear to me ahead of time that I could potentially need multiple cycles to do PGD.

Hope this helps.....feel free to FM me if you have any other questions! Chat Icon

My insurance will cover PGD if there is a known chromosomal issue but will not cover IVF under any circumstances

I just had PGD done in March. As ready2go stated it took me 2 cycles to get 7 day 5 embryos. My insurance did not cover it ($5000). I wasn't testing for anything specific. I did it bc we had 3 losses in a year. 6 embryos tested-5 came back normal and one inconclusive. Had my transfer Friday and just got a bfp yesterday. I will be on egg shells for the next few weeks but at least it is a step in the right direction.

Re: PGD and insurance

We did PGD the cycle that brought us our son. It was 5k in addition to the IVF cost. We did the biopsy on day 3 and transferred day 5. I was originally pregnant with twins, but lost him early on. FM with any questions!

Really by ob/ Gyn was so sure they wouldn't cover Pgd without ivf. I kinda knew he was wrong. :/

For my plan, they wont cover infertility treatments of any kind (iui, IVF, etc) but PGD where there is a known issue is apparently considered differently. But, I dont think you can really do much with PGD without IVF so it seems kind of silly they wouldnt cover the IVF to go with it. We havent gone down that path at this point but I guess its better than nothing.
