I lost my husband last July and my sons are 4 and 2 now. 4 is a very hard age to explain death to. He knows his daddy is in heaven and he loves us but does not understand much more than that. He will still ask occasionally when daddy is coming home. My husband was sick for two years and most of it was spent in the hospital so there wasn't a sudden change in their lives. There are books out there and counselors but for now I speak from the heart. He is a happy boy otherwise. My little one is still too little to know much on the topic. Thank you everyone... Your words mean so much to me..
We had the wake today and my son saw his Daddy for the first time and said he was sleeping and could he wake him up. I explained to him that he was in heaven now.. He was ok with that.. About 30 minutes later he came over to me again and asked if he could wake him up now.. I said to him that Daddy died. And that he isn't with us here anymore but that he is an angel and he will always be his Daddy. He never asked anything again after that..
He did say later on about how Daddy did something when he was alive. So he gets dead and alive... But thankfully he doesn't get the grief part of it... To have to tell your child this stuff is something no one should have to do.... I got a book for him and a number to a local therapist...

Thank you everyone. We buried my husband today... I tried not to cry because my son was right next to me the whole time... He saluted his Daddy as they put him on the fire truck. I kind of lost it then.. I really appreciate all of your kind words and support.. I am just taking things day by day for myself and getting my son back to his normal schedule nest week...

I just went to a training on this and wrote down a name of a book I'll share with you when I find my notes. The woman said to answer every question and not be vague because children fill unanswered questions with their own ideas which can be confusing and scary. A therapist is a good idea.
Once again I'm so sorry you and your sin are going through this
