Library Jobs

Hello... doing a little networking for DH.

He is currently a secondary education teacher - for 12 years plus but will probably be excessed this year, so he is looking for a new job.

He has a BA in English and a Masters in Library Science. He is an English teacher and has been the Media Specialist (he is still in the library one period a day as well as after school)

With education becoming more and more unstable, he is branching out his job search into other areas, especially libraries.

If anyone knows of any library jobs, please LMK

Chat Icon Thanks!

Re: Library Jobs

Is he opposed to working nights and weekends? I'm a parttime librarian now and I can say library jobs are scarce, too. Lots of cuts across the board and not a lot of full time librarians being hired. There ARE a lot of part time positions available in a number of libraries but they all state that they need nights and weekends. Many part timers piece together hours from a few different libraries.

What was his concentration in library school? School media? Maybe he can reach out to his adviser for some guidance.

Re: Library Jobs

Maybe post this on the teaching board?

Also I work in the social work field and know agencies that will often hire Independent Living Skills Trainers for adults with disabilities and the employee can have a background in education.

It's tough though because the roles are generally PT or pieced together and I'm sure the pay is not the same as what one would be making in many school districts.

Is there any need for ESL or tutoring?

I think library jobs are very tough right now. Several friends of mine are Library Science majors/minors and many are only doing PT right now. One is a FT teacher keeping a few hours per month in her library just to keep her foot in the door in case her teaching position is excessed, one is just below FT at the library because her manager says she's less expensive/noticeable in the budget if she doesn't get FT benefits Chat Icon and another one is working only 1-2 days per week because she's very young/inexperienced.

Re: Library Jobs

I'm a part time librarian in a public library and also do some freelance research from home. It's a tough job market for librarians right now. Public libraries pretty much only want to hire part timers now.

Maybe academic libraries would be a good fit for him? they often want instructional experience. I see alot of FT jobs at academic libraries in the area (LI and NYC) posted on some of the various librarian listservs I read.

He should check out inalj.com and metro.org

I know Queens Library is hiring teen and adult reference librarians right now full time so maybe check them out too.

My mom's best friend worked in the library at Stony Brook University for almost 30 years. It looks like they have some library positions listed on the website. Best of luck to him!

Librarian jobs are very difficult to come by. I am f/t in a public library and feel very fortunate to have my position. P/T jobs are the only positions being offered in the field. We are facing budget issues as well and the field is beginning to get flooded like teaching. Brooklyn Public Library is hiring a bunch of librarians right now. Best of luck!

Thanks for the replies!!
I don't think he'd be opposed to working nights and weekends, but he would definitely need to have more than one PT job in order to make ends meet. I am not surprised there aren't many. Not many teaching jobs either, lol.

He has been applying out of state, mostly at colleges (He is a high school teacher so he prefers that age anyway). Thanks for the links and the Stony brook info - I will pass them on! (and the good luck wishes too).
