I am not familiar with mezuzahs but in looking at pictures on Google there's no way it was accidental that the painter didn't see it. It was probably someone who just didn't care to do the right thing and ask before painting.

I'm so sorry Chat Icon

Thanks everyone.

My thought exactly! Even if the painter wasn't familiar with Jewish customs (though I would assume a painter in NYC has seen more than one mezuzah in their career) you'd think they err on the side of caution when they say a gold art-looking item on the door! It baffles me.

I agree.

There is no way that can really be reimbursed IMO. Would they have done that with a crucifix? I would make sure to contact to company they used to paint your apartment. This is unforgivable.

Eta: I grew up in NYC, and this isn't the first time I have seen and heard about mezuzahs being painted over. I think it's true ignorance. Paint companies should be taught how to recognize religious items in homes.

yes, exactly!

That is really terrible and you have every reason to be upset. It was most likely accidental and sounds like the management is trying to do the right thing by you. Hope you can salvage it somehow. Chat Icon

I agree! Perhaps you should call an art restoration service to ask what can be done. Than tell the building that it will have to pay the cost of its being cleaned, or for another trip to Israel so that you can get another one.

Re: Mezuzah painted over by management!

I have seen a lot of painted over mezuzahs. I always assumed they were from occupants of long ago, as some people believe they are supposed to leave mezuzahs when they move. I know it's no consolation but in terms of religion, your mezuzah is still good. I'd try to find the price of the exact same one, with kosher scrolls, and it seems like your building is going to pay. It will never be the one you got in Israel. My menorah was shipped from Israel (by online order) so there is some chance you can get the same one.

I would be pissed especially if I got it in Israel and couldn't easily replace it. I would totally send in the amount and fight for reimbursement. That is so rude. and I would alert the other family too in case they didn't already notice.

Oh that's awful, I'm so sorry.

I would most definitely take it to a jeweler and see if they can restore it, at least before I'd try the paint thinner route. You'd be surprised at what can be done these days.

That's horrible, I pray they it can be restored. It seems irreplaceable since you got it on a trip to Israel.

It's good that they will replace the monetary value but did they even inform the tenants that they were painting the doors? If not they really should let you guys knkw. Send a notice out or so something.

Re: Mezuzah painted over by management!

I am just so upset for you. The paint doesn't impact the sacredness of the mezzuzah, since it is the scroll inside that is holy, but it is irreplaceable since it is from your trip to Israel. I don't understand how a painter would just paint over something like that. In NYC, mezuzzahs are ubiquitous on the doorposts of apartment buildings. It was either sheer ignorance or a complete disregard for a religious object. I would be absolutely livid.

Wow! I am so sorry! I don't know why the heck someone would do that. If there was a wreath or something on the door, would they have painted over that, too? I don't get it.

Oh, I would be so livid if I were you. My door was also painted recently, and they didn't even go near the mezuzah, so it's incredible to think others don't do the same. At least the mgm't company is making it right, and now you an R can go buy a new one together.

I'm so sorry this happened to you!!!

I'm not sure of the material it is made of, but I saw on HGTV once on that where the woman renovates whole houses....she put metal handles that had been painted over into a crock pot and let them soak for an hour or two, and the paint peeled right off of them with no damage. I would try that before paint thinner. Chat Icon
