Has anyone switched their child's class late in the year?
As a result of a less than stellar parent/teacher conference today, I am in my head considering asking for a class change from a self contained 12 to an integrated 18 (smallest integrated class his school offers). Was wondering if anyone has done this so late in the game? His teacher's recommendation for next year is gen ed Kindergarten with no services.

Can your DS start visiting an integrated class to see how he would do? Going from a 12:1:2 to General Ed setting with no support services is a huge jump. If they won't allow him to visit informally. I would call the district and ask for a request review CSE meeting to add some integration in a general ed setting to his IEP. Has the classroom teacher made a recommendation to the district yet? Has the district observed him yet? They might not have any idea that this is what the teacher/preschool is thinking...

Yes you can change at any time. Last year we switched mid year. I agree with what the pp said. They need to make a transition plan for your child and have him visit the larger classroom and increase the time until he is in there a full day.
That is a huge jump going from a self contained class to a gen ed K class with no support. I would definitely fight this at your CSE meeting and if he is fine for Gen Ed then he should at least start out with a shared aide or something and that can be weaned off during the year if need be.

yes, be very careful that's wonderful that he has improve to be mainstream but be careful with transition.

I believe you are in my district, and our K classes are HUGE. 26 kids in a class. I wouldn't be comfy with that jump to be honest. I would switch to integrated and see how that goes. I feel like that would make the transition easier, than going from self contained to mainstream with no supports.

I believe you are in my district, and our K classes are HUGE. 26 kids in a class. I wouldn't be comfy with that jump to be honest. I would switch to integrated and see how that goes. I feel like that would make the transition easier, than going from self contained to mainstream with no supports.
Yes we just moved and when I called that is what I was told. 5 classes of 25.  I am a little more at ease now that I spoke with the elementary principal and school psychologist who seem to be interested in knowing about my son's challenges and making sure he gets the help he needs. I also spoke with my son's psychologist at his current school and it would appear that his teacher has had "time to reflect" and would support transitioning him into integrated class throughout the summer. Glad to see she is "getting there"

Actually we had 27 last year ( wasn't counting my DD). It's so ridiculous. In 1st grade they open up 6 sections, so it's down to 20 or 21 kids. K needs less students and six sections IMO though! If you are going to "N" the support staff there is great.

Actually we had 27 last year ( wasn't counting my DD). It's so ridiculous. In 1st grade they open up 6 sections, so it's down to 20 or 21 kids. K needs less students and six sections IMO though! If you are going to "N" the support staff there is great.
I spoke with the psychologist today and she told me there is one cooperative teaching kindergarten class but DS would have to be bussed to "C." Sound like more of a fit for him. I assume since they limit it to only 6 or 7 kids they are "selective"
