SAHMs and Naps

If you usually take naps at the same time as your LO, do you feel you've become more dependent on it? I didn't used to nap... but then she became a toddler and I need one every day. I look forward to it. But on days when I can't take that nap... I get sad... I feel SO exhausted and now I feel dependent on that nap. I'm just wondering if this is normal at all. My body is so used to it, I'm really struggling with not being able to have one today.

I'm not a SAHM but on the weekends I look forward to napping while DS naps. He gets up so early I look forward to my "naps" on the subway heading to work; on the weekends I like the opportunity to close my eyes while he sleeps. I find myself very tired at the end of the day if I don't get that hour to just rest a little.

Re: SAHMs and Naps

I'm not a sahm but I'm a teacher so I get long stretches at home. I despise napping - I always wake up more groggy. While dd naps, I will enjoy a little "me time", even if it's just for a fraction of her nap time. Reading a book or cruising my iPad is just as rejuvenating to me. Maybe you can try replacing naps with general restful activities?

I used to try to nap when dd was a newborn and would have me up all night. But I hated how that was my only free time and I was spending it sleeping instead if getting anything done or just taking a little time for myself. Now that dd sleeps better through the night I feel more rested overall and don't feel like I need a nap to get me through the day, but dd is still definitely exhausting to chase around all day, so I've become dependent on coffee now to get me through the day. Usually as soon as I get her down for her nap make myself a cup of coffee, and that gives me enough energy usually to get some things done during the rest of her nap and carries me through the day.

I'm not SAH but I work PT and I'm home a lot. I only napped when my first was a newborn and I was up ALL night. Once she started sleeping better I stopped with the naps because I felt it 1. wasted all my free time and 2. often leaves me just feeling groggy and more irritable than I was prior to the nap.

I never really got to nap when #2 was a newborn because #1 stopped napping right around when he was born.

If you can get done what you need to and still nap (and feel good after one) I don't see the big deal. I'd do it if it worked out for me.

I don't nap but I definitely get some 'me' time in, whether it's a long hot shower, or just laying on the couch watching tv or surfing the internet. Chasing around a toddler all day is exhausting, nothing wrong with taking some time out for yourself!!

I am a FTWM but lately with the weather have been working from home more and on those days I look forward to nap time with DD. She and I cuddle and i maybe get in 30 minutes and then feel refreshed and go back to getting work done while she continues her nap. I also enjoy napping with her on weekends. I can totally see how its possible to become dependent on them.

Re: SAHMs and Naps

I def don't nap when DS naps. There's always something to do, so I use that time, to cook, clean etc. But then again, I have never been a mapper. I feel awful if I nap ( physically).

Agreed. I rarely nap unless im totally exhausted... I get anxiety with naps simply bc I feel like the minute I close my eyes, she's gonna wake up... And I'll just be more cranky lol

Same here, plus my time is limited because my DS only wants to take half hour naps.

this is pretty much me. DS is 3, and naps 1.5-2 hours a day. right after I put him in, I take a 30-40 minutes for myself and eat my lunch in peace LOL, surf online, watch some TV. then the rest of the time, there is always something to do- cleaning, organizing, phone calls to make....
once in a while i'll close my eyes for a few minutes, if he's been really crazy that day- but I feel "off" if I fall asleep for too long.

I don't nap when dd naps, even when she was a newborn. It gave me anxiety bc I didn't want to let myself fall I to a deep sleep bc I knew I would be woken up when she woke. Plus it's my me time to watch my dvr, play on my ipad/internet.

With that said I am in bed at 9pm and sleeping by 10pm the latest.
