I am DOE and I tried to go to work.
They hadn't plowed. I got stuck on my block trying to make a turn.
Took me 45 minutes and three helpers to get out.
I said heck no, turned around and went home.
For those who said "you choose where you work"... thank you for the sympathy  although I'm hardly surprised.
FYI I would KILL to have a job on LI but I have the worst timing in the world and switched careers after everyone retired. It's a timing choice I have paid for in spades.
OP, you shouldn't have bothered, not because we are not entitled to vent but because it never ends well.
People can't even read our posts clearly. You said we're treated like babysitters...not that we regard ourselves as such. It was clear as day and people still jumped on your back. Incredible.

This exactly. I stayed home too first self decided snow day in the 7 years I've been in the DOE. Was even there the day after Sandy as we were told to come in although the students weren't there. Enough already and I don't k ow where most people get their facts from but at least 75% of the teachers at my school are also on Long Island and at least half of that are from Suffolk not Nassau and believe it or not, the roads are dangerous. If they'd even just delay it so the plows can get out it would've been okay. When I attempted to go in at 5:30 the ice and snow were piled up and the roads weren't touched yet!
BTW all of the non teachers can just take a sick day too and as far as saving days in our "bank". That is the ONLy way NYc teachers can have children of their own as we do not get any maternity. And unlike many other jobs at the end of the year we can just get them paid out.

I did.
I'm sorry but I need to go to work, I need to send my son to school because I am a single parent. I have ZERO help. I'm lucky because I have a great sitter who can get him if his afterschool program is cancelled but I have to go to work and he has to go to school.
It's nice to be able to have the luxury to be the parent who wouldn't let their kids outside. Guess I suck

Of my 29 students, 10 take yellow buses to and from school. This is nycdoe. Not only am I concerned for their safety at their bus stops (at 6:45/7 am), I am concerned for their safety on those buses because of the slippery streets and narrower than normal roads due to poor plowing/shoveling.
The idea that all kids live in walking distance in the 5 boros is ludicrous. So is the idea that they take mass transit. Maybe a delayed opening or closure for elem schools but keep high schools open would make more sense. Maybe going on a boros by boros basis would make sense. There are no subway stops near my school.
On days with poor weather, I had maybe 10 students in attendance. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you spend over an hour in the car driving in, up to 30 mins looking for a place to park on the street because there is no nicely plowed lot, then slip and slide for five blocks to get to work, and then not be able to teach anyway because there aren't any students in your class.
If I had different job where my day wasn't dictated by whether or not anyone else came in to work, I would feel differently. If we had a parking lot I would feel differently! For the record, my commute is normally 15-20 mins but can take upward of 1.5 hrs if the roads are bad, so no lecture about moving into a house across he street from where I work please.

I just think in general, people need to stop complaining. Sitting around in a pisssing match seeing who has it worse and playing the blame game is stupid and pointless. There are pros and cons to every job, lord knows that tops been beaten to death, but maybe people need to change their attitudes. This weather is typical for our region, people here think we should have one or two snow days and then it should be 80 degrees because they're "over it." But guess what, the reality is that it's winter and we are seeing that it can only get worse. So it sucks, but stop ********! Redirect your annoyance, think of the positives of your job to put it in perspective. I have work today, I'm not complaining - I cleaned my car and took it slow. How is it productive to sit on a chat board and fight with people over the freaking weather? Some of you need to get over yourselves!

But city kids don't wait on bus stops generally. They walk to take the subway. There isn't bussing like on LI. This is why the schools don't close.
When I worked in Manhattan yes most of the high school kids took the subway. I teach in Queens now and this is not the case at all. If they do take the subway it is a hike as in a couple of miles. Most walk or take a bus or their parents drive them.

I'm astonished at people that think a NYC teacher can pick up the phone and just call out!
DH said he can't use a day from his bank unless he has a dr note. He used his personal days when our child was born and he took 5 days.
If he is late, he gets docked time.
He said busses in queens aren't running and attendance stinks. What a waste of a day. All to get $$$$.
NYC teachers haven't had a contract in 5 years since bloomberg considered them babysitters anyway.

OMG too bad. EVERYONE I know went to work today. I'm so tired of seeing this every time it snows. Also, maybe if you have a job that requires a long commute in sometimes inclement weather, you should consider a better equipped (snow friendly) vehicle or moving closer to work. If you work in NYC and live in Suffolk, that is a choice you made for yourself.

I'm curious to see how many people ignore this post because it conflicts with the point they want to make about city schools. Thank you for showing that it's not easy (or always necessarily safe) for city kids to get to school either.

Without me reading all the responses on this thread, here are my thoughts/feelings.
I work for a school in NE Queens that follows the DOE in terms of whether or not we close. Our upper school is a DOE program housed in a day treatment center. I work in the preschool, where there is no DOE staff. We make a lot less money than DOE staff, and cannot carryover more than 4 days from year to year, so no real banking days for us.
The students at my school mostly come via bus, some from other boroughs. Today we have 38/60 kids. I drove here from SE Nassau because I was out Monday since DD's daycare was closed. I was very upset this morning that NYC schools were not closed. The conditions on many local streets were not safe, nor were the sidewalks for those walking. The major says that they decided about school closings based on safety - well, it wasn't safe. It was actually safer for me on the highway than it was for neighborhood kids getting to school.
And for those who think that teachers whine about schools not being closed, think of it this way...if you worked in a field where there was potential for work to be closed due to the weather, you would hope for it too.
Not in my school, but in the public schools, it is not so easy for teachers to just call in, and they get docked time for lateness - even in weather like this! Not everyone can get on the roads early if they have to get a child to daycare that only opens at a certain time. Just some food for thought.

IMO you do what you can with those ten children. I understand not wanting to do a formal lesson with poor attendance, but there are a lot of educational activities that exist that aren't a movie.
I think a pp hit the nail on the head when she said that teaching is a profession where there is always the possibility of a shut down for snow. Imo an expectation is built bc of that possibility.

I work for the federal govt. non teacher. I work in Manhattan. I live in Brooklyn. I just came off of a maternity leave. I have a negative sick leave balance of 5 weeks b/c we don't get maternity either.
the gripe I think most people have is the idea that ONLY teachers somehow have it especially hard on days like these. MANY MANY MANY other people work in Suffolk, work for employers who have very ****** leave policies, and have to figure it out just like everyone else.
while I am sure certain areas of Queens and maybe even Brooklyn where difficult this morning, the vast majority of NYC was slushy but decent this morning. power outages on the 2/3 line notwithstanding, I got into my office just fine.

I don't work in education but I also cannot get my required work done if a lot of my coworkers don't come in.
I also have a 20 min commute that can be 2 hours in bad weather.
I'm sure most employed people have these exact same situations.

While I can understand the frustration of having to commute in poor weather conditions, it is what it is. NYC public schools very rarely close. Everyone knows this. This should not surprise anyone. But what I don't understand is that teachers sometimes *seem* like this is some kind of personal vendetta against them. Like the mayor is out to get them or something. ALL city agencies are open. ALL the time. I have worked for the city for over 10 years and have NEVER EVER EVER EVER had a snow day. NEVER. Not after a blizzard, not after Sandy, nothing. So right off the bat, you teachers have got me beat there.
So yes, it sucks that NYC teachers have to work. But take comfort that there are many others alongside with you. Employees from many city agencies including, but not limited to, DEP, DOF, NYCHA, DOB, HPD, DCAS, etc, etc, etc, were all required to trek into work today or use one of their vacation days if they did not show up. And there are many who live outside of the 5 boroughs as well.
In conclusion, commuting in crappy weather sucks no matter who you work for. Use you best judgment to decide what the best course of action is for you.

when I feel it's unsafe for my son to go to school, I keep him home. every.single.person on earth has to use their discretion. as an employee and as a parent. some people WILL have a harder time or won't be able to come in. some people will have an easier time. I think there are people who have legitimate concerns of safety. but I also think there is a lot of drama llama ing too.

I am a teacher and I kind of agree with this, I drove to work today and it was fine, rainy a little slushy but fine, I also don't live in li I live in queens and drive to Brooklyn

I had to go to work today. My daycare was open today, so my kids went. I didn't really have a choice. My DH is leaving work at noon and will go get them early. If staying home was a feasible option, I would have. But, for many of us it is not an option so I am thankful that day care was open. I am sure many NYC parents feel the same.

Agreed. This weather is not nasty enough to warranty a city wide closing. When I was a kid in the city, YEARS would go by without a closing.
I'm sorry but I have to agree. I actually didn't think the roads were that bad this morning. I went to work and waited an hour in traffic, But I don't think a city wide closing was really necessary. It's a little icy and slushy, but I took it slow and got to work just fine. I'm an essential worked in my field and don't have snow days!!!

here on the south shore of suffolk its not doing anything... it snowed for a hot minute & then switched to rain (which wasnt all that bad) and now it stopped
road here are fine... slushy, but fine. kind of wishing my son's preschool just had a delayed opening instead of being closed esp since i'm pregnant & on bed rest & the roads arent bad

I'm curious as to how many offices are officially closed today...from what I see around my job everyone is pretty much open for business. Yes some people are WFH, others made it in. No business that I know of is officially closed..heck even the deli across the street is open and serving. I don't understand why anyone feels that today should have been a snow day. It's slushy and nasty but it's winter. This year happens to be an active snow season...should we shut down everytime there is some snow or ice on the ground?
As with everything else in life use discretion. If you don't feel safe going into work then stay home.

Thank you!!!!! THis is exactly what people are saying…..it sucks for all of us whether you are a teacher or anyone else. We all chose our careers and have to deal with the choices we make.
I chose to work in the city so I could have a bigger paycheck. I had to take a day today but I on Monday I got on the snowy train even though I would have loved for my boss to say stay home….but this is life and we SUCK IT UP!!!!!!!!
