That's it - I am submitting my kid to "My Strange Addictions"

Does anyone's baby/kid pull out their hair and eat it??? We catch DD doing this and often but mostly see her doing it at night in her crib...I have even found hair in her poop! She also eats fuzz like crazy...picks it off her sleepsacks, sweaters, rugs, stuffed animals, blankets, changing pad etc. I mostly catch her eating the fuzz in her crib and carseat so could be a boredom thing but I do see her picking the rug here and there. I try to tell her no when I see it happening but she's like a crack addict and can't stop - no joke. She eats plenty of food all day so he's not hungry. Ok carry on. Hope I am not alone.

I would definitely discuss this with her pediatrician.

I remember the little girl I babysat for did this. They usually out grow it, but I would talk to pediatrician. I think there is name to this but I forget what it is called.

Yes! Her iron and zinc levels could be low. I would definitely mention it to her doctor. How old is she? Good news is that Pica tends to end rather quickly in young children.

Really??? I never thought it could be something like that? She is 15 months and has been doing this for 2 months on and off. Her iron was tested 2 months ago and was normal. She eats a well balanced diet and takes a multivitamin with iron - we try to give that every other day

Yes, that is def pica, speak to her ped about it. How long has she been doing it? Have you recently taken away paci, or other change?

I would definitely talk to the ped about it. Although it sounds like pica, one of the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-V is that "the eating of non-nutritive substances is inappropriate to the developmental level of the individual." 15 month old often still put things in their mouths that are inedible, so it's not that far off developmentally, but since she is swallowing the hair, fuzz, etc., I would be concerned.

My DD did this off and on. After a while she would not ingest it put just pull it out and run it past her lips. I think she liked the feel of it. I was sooo worried about it. She eventually outgrew it at around 4. For her , it was a soothing mechanism.

It can also be a sensory issue. I have a friend who used to pull her hair out as a child and her mother used to freak b/c she was going bald. It was like a self soothing thing for her. Your DD might be eating it b/c well, 1 year olds eat EVERYTHING!!

DD would eat the nasty dog hair/fuzz that collected on the chair pads on the legs of the kitchen chairs. It made me want to vomit. She eventually just stopped. It was around 15-18 months.

Pulling out hair and eating it is called trichotillomania (I may have spelled it wrong) - not sure how young it exhibits in kids, but definitely mention this to your pediatrician sooner rather than later.
