Don't worry, I didn't hit mine the last two years. The first year I missed by 2, but my goal was higher, 75. Last year my goal was 50 and I missed by 4. I got really into a series this fall so that sped things right along. lol!

I actually think I'm going to change my goal to 52 books. I saw someone did a challenge where they read through the alphabet. A book beginning with A, with B, with C, etc. So I'm going to try to run through the alphabet twice. I have books for every letter except for X and Q. Chat Icon I might have to get creative for those.

Re: 2014 Yearly Goal! Post books you read here!

I'm gonna say 60. I said 40 last year and hit 70.

60 seems about right.

1-The Bronze Horseman-Paullina Simons -Very good.
2-Taitiana & Alexander-Paullina Simons-Very good
3- What Kind of Mother are you? -Paula Daly...liked it a lot but not as much as everyone raved.
4- Happier at Home: Kiss More, Jump More, Abandon Self-Control, and My Other Experiments in Everyday Life -Gretchen Rubin - eh nothing special.
5-Pictures of You- Caroline Leavitt-started out good, got SUPER boring, couldn't wait for it to end.
6-The Art of Patience - Allan Lokos- loved it. I need patience, Its my major downfall, this was a great book.
7-The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer - Not into it. was too deep for me.
8-Unbroken- Laura Hillenbrand- I so wanted to love this, I just couldn't. It was almost too detailed for me. Pages and pages of a book just to describe ONE foot race left me bored. The writing was top notch in other ways, It was just too fantastical for me.
9-Orphan Train-Christina Baker Kline - again, wanted to love it, just thought was ok. Wanted it to be over. Beginning was better than the rest.
10-Born to Run-Christopher McDougall - Was interesting
11-Sarah's Key- just ok for me
12-The kindness of strangers-too harsh of a subject matter
13-hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet

2014 Yearly Goal! Post books you read here!

I've never set a goal before but I want to try this year and see how I do! I know I read a bunch of books in 2013 but I didn't keep track. I'm going to give myself a goal of 25 for 2014. Hoping to get back into the Outlander series (I stopped mid-book #4) and looking forward to the new BDB book!

I am aiming for 55 this year. Last year I set the bar low at 30, but when my dad died in May I upped it to 55 in his honor (he read a lot too and was aiming for 80 on Goodreads). I got to 45 but I think with better planning I can hit 55 this year. Chat Icon

Re: 2014 Yearly Goal! Post books you read here!

Goal: 52 Books

January

1. Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth- 3 stars- Okay. So I know how angry everyone is over this ending. Maybe it was unnecessary, but it felt real. Not every story has to have a happy ending- why would you keep reading if you knew that everything would always turn out exactly right in the end? This last book did leave a bit to be desired though. I think the author tried to do too much and it was just a little crazy and disjointed. The chapters were written way too similarly- I could never remember who was the "I" until they'd mention Tobias or Tris. Plus, the chapters in all her books are so short that it jumped back and forth way too much. All in all, I still really enjoyed the series, even if the last book wasn't all it could be.

2. Bright Lights, Big Ass: A Self Indulgent, Ex-Sorority Girl's Guide to Why it Often Sucks in the City, or Who Are These Idiots and Why Do They All Live Next Door To Me? by Jen Lancaster- 4 stars- I've read a few of her books (completely out of order, whoops!) and this is one of the better ones. I still like Bitter is the New Black the best, but Jen Lancaster is hilarious and real. Her house sounds a lot like mine!

3. Cinder (Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer- 4 stars- This was billed as a modern retelling of Cinderella, but it was really just a new story with touches of Cinderella in it (her foot, the ball, the stepmother, etc.). I really enjoyed it though- much more than I thought I would. It seems like they mentioned a few other fairy tales in the beginning (Snow White and another, but I can't remember) so I'm interested to see how they weave those tales into the series.

4. Dare Me: A Novel by Megan Abbott- 1 star- A sad, disturbing story about sad, disturbed people. I raced through this book, but not because I enjoyed it. I just wanted to get it over with and find out what exactly happened.

5. Everyday by David Levithan- 3 stars- It was a really interesting read and the author did well with the premise, but I was dissatisfied by the end. I'm sure I wasn't alone!

6. Feed by Mira Grant- 3 stars- I'm having a difficult time rating this book. It was longer than I expected, and the first three quarters of it felt even longer than it was. It was a good story, with a really good ending, but the author put in so much detail in the beginning half of the book. There was a lot of tech talk about their equipment and the ways humanity has tried to stop outbreaks and it was just too much- some things were explained several times in all but the exact same words. I think with a little editing, this book could've gone from good to great.

February

7. The Giver by Lois Lowry- 5 stars- Another fantastic read that I was deprived of in my Catholic school! I wish I had been given books like these to read when I was younger.

8. Help for the Haunted by John Searles- 4 stars- A surprisingly good read! The last two or three chapters did a 180 from the beginning of the book, but I think that's what made it so good. The whole story had you going back and forth between believing and not believing, so the ending was a surprise. The whole book was just the right amount of creepy- I've read books about zombies, vampires, monsters, serial killers, anything and everything and nothing, I mean NOTHING, creeped me out like this book.

9. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot- 2 stars- If you asked me how I felt about this book halfway through, I probably would've started ranting and raving. But now that I've finished, I feel a little better about it. I actually was torn between a 2 star and 3 star rating since I feel like the author not only told the story she wanted to tell, but also helped improved the lives of the Lacks family.

March

10. Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously by Julie Powell- 4 stars- Mildly funny, but definitely entertaining. It was a nice, light read.

11. The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking #1) by Patrick Ness- 4 stars- Ugh, how I love and loathe series!! I wish there was an ending to this, but they just leave you hanging, heart racing, thirsty for more. I think I may have to deviate from my alphabet challenge and continue this series. What a ride though!

12. The Ask & Answer (Chaos Walking #2) by Patrick Ness- Currently reading.

Re: 2014 Yearly Goal! Post books you read here!

I didn't do the challenge here on LIF last year but I always do it on Goodreads. This year I will do it here too Chat Icon

My 2014 goal is 75 books.

January
1- Undone- Karin Slaughter. Love Will Trent, and love this series!
2- Fallen- Karin Slaughter
3- Criminal- Karin Slaughter
4- Reconstructing Amelia- Kimberley McCreight- I really did not care for this book. The premise was interesting but the execution was awful.
5- Unseen- Karin Slaughter- I usually love these books, especially the Will Trent series. However, this was a chore to get through and I didn't care for it. First time saying that about one of her books.
6- Sacred- Dennis Lehane- not my favorite of this series.
7- Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth- Reza Aslan- This was INCREDIBLE. I absolutely adored this book.
8- Some Kind of Fairy Tale- Graham Joyce- LOVED this, even though I would have preferred a little more solid of an ending.
9- Firebird- Susanna Kearsley- not a fan. Too fluffy.
10- Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald- Eh. Just eh. It was just ok.
11- We Are Water- Wally Lamb- I had really mixed feelings about this book. It was beautifully written. The character development was incredible. The story was amazing, as was the plot pacing. However, the absolutely gratuitous and graphic child abuse was over the top for me. It was really disturbing.
12- Under the Wide and Starry Sky- Nancy Horan- I hated this book. On paper I should have loved it but I couldn't stand any of the main characters.
13- And When She Was Good- Laura Lippman- Not my favorite of her books, but it was a quick, entertaining read.
14- The Last Child- John Hart-
15- The Siren- Tiffany Riesz- I picked this up thinking it was a nice, smutty read but wow, it was more than that!! Interesting story, characters, dialogue, and the writing was surprisingly great! I really liked it and will read the rest of the series.
16- This Dark Road to Mercy- Wiley Cash- I wanted MORE from this book. It had great bones, but it needed to be fleshed out more. It could have been great but instead it was just eh.
17- Jacob's Oath- Martin Fletcher- Excellent. Read in 2 sittings, couldn't put it down.
18- The Angel- Tiffany Reisz- I love these books. It's like emotionally intense erotica.
19- The Golem and the Jinni- Helene Wecker- LOVED IT!!!!! Didn't want it to end!!
20- The Winter People- Jennifer McMahon- I really enjoyed it, and it was a super creepy winter read, but I wasn't a fan of the ending.
21- Free Range Learning- Laura Grace Weldon- Loved it!
22 The Innocent Sleep- Karen Perry- I hated the two main characters in this book. Like, seriously hated them. I wanted to like this, but I couldn't get over my dislike of the main characters.
23- Into the Forest- Jean Hegland- GO OUT AND BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT RIGHT NOW. NOW. GO. Best thing I have read in a long time. Absolutely mind bogglingly incredible.
