Question for nursing moms

Hi all,
DD is 2.5w and is exclusively breastfeeding. Boy, can she eat!!! Sometimes she will nurse for 30-60 min and then sleep for 1-2 hours before she gets hungry again. Sometimes, she will nurse for an hour and then fall asleep for only 10 min before waking up crying her eyes out trying to suck at everything that she can reach.

When this happens DH or I will try to comfort her but the only thing that makes her stop crying is feeding her for another 10-30 min. My pediatrician told me under no circumstance should I feed more than 1x every 2 hours and the lactation consultant said to feed on demand.

When I pump, I can usually get 4oz every 20 min, so I believe my milk supply is decent. Any thoughts on this? Is this normal? The lactation consultant calls this cluster feeding, but this is happening almost everyday?!?!?!

She is gaining weight well. Was 6lbs 10oz 2 weeks ago and 7lbs 2oz this past Friday. Her output is also normal, 5-7 poopy diapers a day. Is this typical?

Question for nursing moms

Yes this is normal and yes it's cluster feeding. It usually happens in the first few months during growth spurts!!
And with much respect to Pediatricians, they don't know much about BFing. I'd listen to your LC.

Re: Question for nursing moms

I had the same issue with the hour long feedings and DS wanting to nurse again an hour later (I think partially b/c he was comfort nursing more than eating!!). It's why I chose to pump more, only b/c I wanted to make sure he was getting enough since I was getting concerned if he stayed on for an hour it was b/c he had issues getting the milk and/or was sleeping on my boob too much to get a full feeding. I also pump about 3-4 oz per session, so at least that gives me enough for each feeding (although sometimes with his appetite I need to supplement an ounce of formula if he's looking for 4 oz and I was only able to pump 3). Good luck it is super tough exclusively nursing, don't let anyone let you feel badly about pumping vs. nursing, you are still giving breastmilk just in a different delivery method!! I felt the bond of him nursing on me the most important in the first week (and he was literally on me for like 20 hours per day that first week!

ITA! Listen to the LC. It doesn't sound like your ped is that pro breastfeeding, which is frustrating.

Maybe, your baby wants a pacifier? In the hospital my ds nursed once for two hours. After a few days of this, I thought maybe he needed a paci. I asked the nurse for one and he was happy. When he gets tired, he likes it.

I would definitely listen to the LC over your ped. Cluster feeding is totally normal in the beginning and is good for your supply as well. DD nursed every hour in the evenings for the first few weeks. I can't imagine not having fed her during those times that nothing else soothed her.

100% absolutely this. Listen to the LC and follow your LOs cues. The cluster feedings will also be great at making sure your supply meets her demands.

It's a shame that SO MANY peds are clueless about BFing.

Keep up the good work.

Ditto!!!

My twins did this all day long in the beginning and now at 10 weeks, they still cluster feed but only when it's nearing bedtime. This is just your LO helping to increase your supply. I would listen to the LC and keep feeding on demand. You're doing a great job mama!

Re: Question for nursing moms

At that age they feed on demand - eventually it will lessen and spread out - but have you tried a pacifier !! She might really want to suck - my three kids all were soothed and held out until the 2 hr mark if I gave the paci in between feedings - they may spit it out at first bec they don't know what to do with it - but if you hold it there they eventually get the hang of it - it took a couple of weeks for my DD to get the hang of actually keeping if her mouth! And it gave mommy some breaks !!!

Question for nursing moms

I agree with everyone above. My ped told me I was BFing too much (and he is pro BFing) bc my DS would nurse 40 minutes a pop and then nurse again shortly after. It feels like all you do is nurse the first month or two, it's draining and you feel as if you're doing something wrong - but you're not. You're giving your baby everything they need. So good job! You're doing wonderfully!

I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that your ped isn't pro BFing, but I would agree with other posters in that your LC is most certainly more knowledgable on the topic of BFing than is your ped. Some peds feel that when a baby latches on for too long and then goes back again shortly afterward, they're just hanging onto the boob for comfort and not getting much out after a certain period of time so I'm sure that's why your ped is saying this, not because they're not pro BFing... I honestly don't know which is true but I'd be more inclined to listen to your LC since that is her job. Chat Icon

I had different issues with BFing, with my DS being a NICU baby amongst other problems, and then finally he was just completely insatiable (he was very thin and VERY tall at birth so he had a lot of catching up to do) and I had to supplement so much that I ended up FFing exclusively after one month. If I had had a great LC I probably would've been more successful.
