An eye opening read.....
With the school year starting, I know it is a pain sometimes for us non-allergy moms to have to read labels to make sure we don't send in anything with nuts but this was really eye opening to the other side. To help remember, for these moms and their babies, to be extra vigilant bc it is all of our responsibilities to help protect their babies when their moms cannot.

That made me cry!
I saw something on a local Facebook page recently about my school district not serving PB&J this year. Turns out it was b/c they couldn't get it from the supplier, but people assumed it was due to allergies and some of the responses of parents- PARENTS, PEOPLE WITH THEIR OWN CHILDREN- just blew my mind.
"Why should my child be inconvenienced because a kid has an allergy. Put him at a separate table, a different room."
"Why should my chid suffer when PB&J is the only thing he'll eat?!"
I just am amazed that some people still don't get how dangerous it can be. DS is super picky. One of the few things we can count on him to eat is PB&J. So, yeah, it sucks that he hardly eats the lunches they provide at daycare, but he'll be ok. It would kill me to think some other child suffered or, even died.

I agree, by BFF has 2 out of her 3 kids with a severe peanut allergy and she has said she gets a lot of that...just put them at their own table, etc. But what people don't realize is that they can have it on their hands, touch a doorknob and it transfers. She found out about the first childs allergies bc her DH touched her DS after having Reeses Pieces, not bc he actually ingested peanuts. In NO WAY does my kids need for PB crackers trump another child's need to be able to breathe and be safe. I sometimes think its just a lack of understanding, which is why I thought this was a good eye opener for those who, like myself, never see the "other side." i get its a PITA, I do, but it is one PITA I am willing to take on and my vigilant about, especially after the understanding I gained when reading this.

An eye opening read.....
Ugh, as the mom of a child with a peanut allergy, who is also starting kindergarten this year, reading things like this terrifies me. I have the option of putting him at the "allergy" table for lunch, but am so torn about ostracizing him from the get-go. I'm just hoping that all the parents of kids in his class are understanding and realize that it isn't something we have a choice about.

An eye opening read.....
Made me cry too. Terrified that dd will have an allergy. My heart breaks for these parents. And shame on parents who can't or won't understand.

Just curious.
There will be a letter sent home to the parents of kids in my son's class letting them know there is a student with a severe food allergy in the class and that they can't give their kids anything with nuts for classroom snack and for birthdays. But they are allowed to bring in nut products for lunchtime in the cafeteria.

Just curious.
My kid's school is by class, not a schoolwide policy. Last year, one DC was in an allergy free class where there were no allergies so we could send it whatever. The classes at lunch are seated by class tables.
This year, i dont know yet but we may or may not have a child with an allergy in the class. If we do, we will be notified and sent any restrictions pertaining to DC's class.

Same here. This story, this is my fear every single day. I will never forget the day when my DS had a severe reaction. Something like that stays with you forever.

Yea, what happened with kids who had severe peanut allergies back in the day when I was a kid? Or do more kids have nut allergies now?
My DS's new school is a Peanut Free School.
I know how severe nut allergies can be, my sister is allergic to shell fish. Any cross contanimantion or kissing her after eating seafood can kill her.
Its ironic because she is married to a Portuguese guy, so we have to schedule seafood dates so he can get his fix in.

I may have read the same facebook and I too was very upset by the posts from insensitive parents who were upset that their child would not be able to buy PB & J.
