Saving for retirement LATE!!
is there any hope or am I destine to be slinging pancakes at IHop when I am in my 80's?
DH and I are in our early 40's and have no retirement fund set up.
Where do I start? do I need to see a financial planner and if so where should I start to find one..who to trust these days?

Saving for retirement LATE!!
It's never too late. Start basic and open up an IRA with ING if you haven't already done so. If you have a 401K or similar in your jobs start contributing especially if you have a company match. Financial advisors can be recommended by your bank. Good luck!

first off do you or dh work for a company with a 401k? does the company contribute anything to it if you contribute? If so start contributing right away so you get the match! that's free money given to you for retirement

Dh is self employed and I am an executive assistant to a couple so no benefits there.

I actually just hired my friend's financial adviser and so far I absolutely LOVE him!!! He's been giving me great advise...which will actually make him LESS money! FM me if you want his info. I feel like a weights been lifted since i started with him.

Are you or your DH currently members of USAA? Or eligible to be members? They have fantastic financial planning services for free that will get you headed in the right direction.
Also, you're too young now, but you will hit an age were you can contribute to certain retirement funds and play "catch-up".

Thanks everyone...what is USAA? will google it as have never heard of it. I like the idea of catch up and honestly DH has his fingers in a few pies that could feasibly make us lots of $$ but I like to err on the side of caution and want to be prepared if these things do not pan out.
My pain concern is not that I have to live a frugal life when I am older but that I do not become a burden to our kids -that would kill me as I see friends of mine how are supporting their parents financially now and its such a burden on them.

To be a member of USAA, you must be a military family or be grandfathered in.
