Pre-TTC Genetic testing

Did any of you guys go for this? We don't have any family history (thank God) but my doctor, the last time I was there, wanted to draw my blood for 890890809 genetic screening tests. Just wondering how necessary this is.

Pre-TTC Genetic testing

I had a genetic screening done before TTC. While it is not necessary I felt it was important do to my background. If you and your DH are carriers for any diseases it is best to know before you are pregnant.

Re: Pre-TTC Genetic testing

I had it done prior to getting Pg only because I was seeing an RE for fertility issues. Otherwise I probably would not have had it done. Thankfully everything came back just fine

My DR wouldn't recommend it based on our histories. He said there was no valid basis. I'm glad I didn't do any because it would have caused me a lot of stress.

Re: Pre-TTC Genetic testing

I had it done at my RE. My OB didn't say anything when we were TTC on our own.

Personally, I'm glad I did. I know people who have gotten pregnant and THEN found out they were a carrier for something and had to have DH tested. That was very scary

Pre-TTC Genetic testing

I did with my OB. I found out that I was a CF carrier, and my husband had to get tested. Luckily, he is not a carrier. So now that's one less thing for us to worry about.

This! It came back that I had Alpha-Thalassemia and my RE scared the shit out of me (and google)! I had to go for additional bloodwork and DH had to as well. Luckily it came back that I am just a carrier and DH isn't Chat Icon

we did because we are both eastern european Jews which comes with a host of possible diseases. the panel we did was for something like 30 different issues. luckily i wasnt a carrier for any of them so DH didn't need to be tested. if you and/or DH are eastern European Jews you should probably get tested just to be safe.

Re: Pre-TTC Genetic testing

To be honest, I wasn't really even planning on going back to my doctor b/c I'm not due for a pap for awhile. I was going to throw caution to the wind and just freelance TTC. Maybe now I should go back!

I am sorry to sound naive, and I truly don't want to offend anyone, but what purpose does this serve other than cause worry?

I mean, say you move forward with genetic testing, and you find you (or DH) are a carrier for X, Y or Z. What does that mean? You choose not to conceive based on what could happen?

I don't think you sound naive! I was thinking the same thing. I dont know what I woudl do. I guess if we were both carriers for something like CF we'd choose not to take the chance, but I dont really know? No one in our family has any known genetic disease. I think we're from some hearty Italian stock or something. We picked a lot of grapes and what not back in the old country.

The purpose of genetic testing is not to cause worry or panic. The purpose is to help you make an informed decision on how to proceed with trying to conceive. Just because no one in your family actually has a genetic disease does not mean you may not be a carrier for a recessive disease. It takes two recessive genes for such a disease to show up in a child.

My personal concerns were mainly Tay-Sachs disease and beta- thalassemia--DH and I come from backgrounds that are high risk groups for these diseases--I felt it was important to determine if TTC naturally was a wise decision based on our risk for these diseases. Luckily, I am not a carrier for any of the diseases that I was tested for-If I had tested positive as a carrier for any genetic conditions then DH would have been tested. I think genetic testing is a personal choice BUT in my opinion it is always better to assess your risk of something bad sooner rather then later.

This. I'd rather know before a BFP. Some of the genetic diseases can be really terrible. Like not living past a certain age, etc etc etc. For us, if I did test positive for something really bad and so did DH, we wouldn't risk it. But if you're already pregnant and find out you both have this, you have a very tough decision to make. That's why I believe in testing before you try.

I guess I think about all of the people who have unplanned/unexpected pregnancies. Unsure what I'll do as of yet, but thanks for all the input on both sides of the coin!

Re: Pre-TTC Genetic testing

So, I thought about it and decided that maybe the smart decision is to have the screening done. My insurance does cover it, so there's really no good reason not to. Scheduled an appt w/my ob for 9/18 and then I guess she'll send me to an in-network genetic testing place. Or did you guys have it done in office? Is it just labwork???

If it is through your OB most likely it will be at whatever place, like Quest Diagnostics, takes your insurance. It is just bloodwork.

Kk, thanks. I wasn't sure. They gave me a list of covered labs, so I'm going to make sure they send it to the correct lab so that I don't end up w/a massive bill.

Definitely make sure you go to a covered lab! My husband had his blood drawn at my doctor's office and they sent it to a lab not covered by his insurance. Didn't even think about it, I was pretty upset about my results and just wanted him to get tested ASAP. Well, we got a $5k bill a few months later!! Luckily we were able to appeal it and his insurance company agreed to pay it.

Re: Pre-TTC Genetic testing

I did the three basic ones when I first went to my old RE. This new RE ordered this one- the Counsyl test which tests for like a million diff genetic issues under the sun.
I think my ins covers it but if it doesn't, my RE said it was under $100 so I went through with it. I am of mixed heritage with genes from every continent so I rather know!
