LIJ South Side Rule (Lack of)

I am not sure if any moms have delivered there recently or not but I went on the hospital tour on Sat and I was shocked by the lack of rules...

1. Unlimited people in the delivery room..I get that some people want a crowd and that is their decision

2. Unlimited people in recovery and that the new born is in recovery..I was shocked by this. I am having a c section and the last thing I would want is a room full of people watching me wake up and being sick.. Plus the fact that everyone can touch the baby before you can even move..

3. 24 hour visiting hours..S

So with everyone involved from the moment you deliver until you leave when do you rest. I know you can put restrictions on things but it makes you in that ackward situation when you have to say sorry you cant do this when the hospital says yes..

Wow. That's a lot of significant changes from less than 2 years ago.
When I delivered, the nurses asked me before letting anyone in l&d.
Are you sure they were talking about c-section recovery? That's really odd.

These are the same rules at LIJ NHP. I ended up sending an email (that some people don't agree with but it ended up being PERFECT for us since LO ended up in the NICU for 2 days) saying that we know everyone is SO excited for DS's birth but we ask that everyone please give us 24 from the time that DS is born before coming up to the hospital. We only invited our parents, siblings, and Godparents up the first day but everyone else came the next day. I ended in a c-section and was glad that everyone waited a day and let me rest.

DS was in the NICU so no one could go down there without one of us anyway. Our parents and siblings went down there before I did with DH but he was the only one who was allowed to hold him, they wouldn't let anyone else.

As for the L&D it is REALLY annoying that they let people back and forth and unlimited amount but it ended up working out for us in the end. At first my ILs wouldn't take the hint of getting out while I was in labor but DH had his sister wait with them and run interference before anyone could come back to my room. While in labor DH got on my last nerve and was not very helpful (as expected LOL). My sister is an OB so she was my other coach and we ended up having my SIL come back and help out so I had 3 coaches. It was the best thing we could have done (I pushed for 2 hours before having a section).

Like I said, make your own rules and ask people to call before coming up. I found that people assumed I would always have visitors (I was there for 4 days) and some people just showed up and I would be changing or not in the room when they would get there.

My parents, ILs and a couple of our siblings were in the waiting area after I had DS and the nurse said do not let anyone hold him, you can say I said so. I was grateful for that since I had just had him. The nurses are not going to go against your wishes. And they were very strict with visiting hours 2 years ago, when did this change?

Re: LIJ South Side Rule (Lack of)

I am not sure when it changed. I delivered my other 2 pregnancies in Good Sam so I was shocked by the rules.

They said that recovery is just for c sections..

They also said when you come in they ask you your wishes but how do they expect moms to recover..

All I know is that I have inlaws that would completely take advantage of this and there is no way in hell I would want them in recovery with me...

I delivered at a different hospital but it generally had the same rules, and they were great, actually.

In regards to 2, are you being put out for your c-section? Generally people are not put out unless there is a medical emergency. I had a c-section and the baby was rolled into recovery in my arms. Then DH went to get our families and it was great. I loved that my mom, dad and sister were able to be with me and see DS right after he was born. There was nothing uncomfortable about it. But if I preferred not having visitors, then the nurses would have asked them to leave. No biggie.

3. There was 24 hours visiting for DH only. Grandparents had extended visiting hours, though this wasn't strictly enforced, which I appreciated. We did have a 2-hour window each day for quiet hours when mom, baby (and dad) were given the opportunity to be alone without visitors. Again, not strictly enforced if you preferred having extra company then.

FYI - Just because they do not limit the # of people doesn't mean you HAVE to have all those people around. If you don't want people there the nurses can say no she's not allowed etc.

You set the rules.

Re: LIJ South Side Rule (Lack of)

their lack of rules is actually great bc it enables each person to set their own rules.

i have a big family and a ton of friends that wanted to visit, that was fine by us because we preferred visitors at the hospital instead of at home so we told them to come between x & y hours and kicked them out when we wanted them to leave. it was better than having people come and be told they cant go in bc they are only allowed 4 visitors at a time (or whatever the old policy was).
when you are in labor they nurses will ask you who you want in the room with you and for how long (i had 7 people in with me while i was in labor with the epidural, but once it was time to push, it was me, DH and my mom). the nurses kept coming in and seeing if we were ok and if we wanted them to leave. they also would come in and check before allowing anyone into the room while you are in labor - they do not allow people to just walk in.

not one of my visitors ever asked the hospital what the rules are...if i said come at this time they came and if i said to leave they left. i would do a generic "oh come around 3pm for an hour". plus when the room gets too crowded people choose to leave bc it gets uncomfortable.

i was very pleased with how LIJ handled their guest policies.

I just delivered there! They will ask you who you want in the recovery room. As for me, I had a c-section. Only my DH was allowed in.

The nurses are amazing! They will keep people out of your room and check on you to be sweet. I had a private room so worth it! Also, you can order anything you want for food which I loved.

I wouldn't go anywhere else. I was in love!

Exactly. I delivered at Southside and the nurses were very good about informing me who was there to visit, and asking me if it was ok for them to come in. I believe most hospitals have this policy now too, not sure the exact reasoning behind it but there are new laws in place.

Three years ago, it was kind of the same... however back then, it was a 2 person limit for visitors (even in private rooms) and there was quiet time from I believe 2-4 every day where only mom, dad and baby were permitted.

Either way, you set the rules. Don't allow anyone you don't want in your room/recovery.

The quiet time was still strictly enforced, at least last September.

That does sound like a lot of freedom to give excited family members. I think you need to decide exactly how you want it to be, and be strict. Don't worry about looking like the bad guy.

I delivered via csection at St Charles 2 years ago and they were pretty strict with rules(although DH stayed passed the time he was supposed to leave and they never kicked him out)...I feel a happy medium would be nice.

LIJ South Side Rule (Lack of)

Can someone help explain this 24/7 policy to me? I'll be having a csection within the next three weeks at Southside and have been debating on getting a private room if possible, so I won't have to stay alone since the baby will be staying with me. But if visiting hours are 24/7, can't I just have my SO stay no matter what room it is?

My sister and I bother delivered there and I do not think that all of that is accurate.
1. I did not have anyone else in the delivery room so I can not speak of this one. But I suppose it is a bit silly, they should limit that #.

2. If you do not deliver via c-section you can have as many people as you want in recovery (it is the same room you deliver). As far as the c-section, my sister was in recovery and they would only let parents/grandparents in. No one else.

3. 24/7 visiting is only in the labor and delivery area. There are set visiting hours for the maternity ward (I can't remember what they are right now). The only person who can stay 24/7 there is your SO.

They don't have set visiting hours anymore. That is where the 24/7 comes in. If you call the hospital and ask the visiting hours for maternity they will tell you there aren't any.

Really?? That sounds silly to me, I liked the fact that they kicked everyone out when visiting hours were over. I only had DD there 18 months ago.

ETA: I just looked at their website and they have 24/7 visiting hours for all departments. That is new. Especially in the ICU, when my pop was in there they had very strict visiting hours.

It's crazy!! I'm delivering at LIJ in NHP next month and I hope people have common sense and don't come and visit at 11pm or just try to stay past 9pm. DH wants to spend the night and I told him NO. I will be swamped once I come home(older DC in school etc) so I would rather have visitors once I'm home opposed to the hospital at least that way I can shower, do laundry, etc.

Just means you have to set limits. I like that it isn't ac "one size fits all" maternity ward. If it's not what you want, I don't think it's crazy or wrong for other people to want it.

Yup they changed it recently.
I am just not sure why. Like what would be the reasoning to allow people up to your room at say 2 am?
Less rules to enforce for them?
I am just curious the reasoning.
