I think we should all take solace in the fact that are still plenty of jerks on LIF of all religions, races, and creeds, this thread is really appalling.

Not shocking at all. It could have been "open season" had that deleted post lasted longer than 5 minutes before it was deleted and more people saw it. I've seen a lot of ignorance on these boards in all the years I've been a poster. But this was the most blatant display of intolerance I have ever seen. That's quite an accomplishment.

Re: Would I be a really nasty neighbor?

I don't know what the drama was about on this thread but to the OP: I am not Jewish but I think it was really inconsiderate of the people planning to choose that date. Once they realized it was a holiday it should have been taken off the table altogether. That being said, if I were you I would refuse to sign only if you feel it would really disturb you that day or if you are really upset about your family missing out. If you are doing it just to make a point then I don't think it's worth it because ignorant people don't often "get" points like this and you will just look like the bad guy. Whatever you decide to do I don't think you are the nasty neighbor. I just think you may have a couple of nasty neighbors on your block. Chat Icon

I had to read that post 3x to make sure I was reading it correctly. It was definitely the worst I have seen here, intolerance is putting it lightly.

I missed the post you are speaking about, thankfully. I see so many posts here that are just plain ignorant. I know some things about Judaism but obviously as a Catholic I am not an expert, the way that people on both sides spoke about others religions was really repulsive. Those who got into 'comparing' Yom Kippur and Good Friday /Lent, assholess on both ends.

I didn't see the need for any comparison of faiths, period. It's an important holiday and the date should not have been considered in the first place IMO. It was not a neighborly thing to do.

I agree. And frankly I don't understand the "well I wouldn't care if it was on Easter" comments either. That's great for those who wouldn't care but I'm sure some would and this poster is observant enough that she DOES care. And as part of a small community/neighborhood, the right thing for the organizers to do is to acknowledge that a mistake was made once it was pointed out that this date was a very important Jewish holiday, and book the party on another date.

Exactly. Thank you. Like I said, this is a small community event. It should be able to be attended by ALL members of the community regardless of how religious anyone thinks they are.

Can't believe this post is still going on. I wasn't going to comment only because I cannot believe the ignorance of some people who post on these boards.

I am catholic went to catholic school from K through 12 grades and I do not agree nor would I ever choose to have a block party on Yom Kippur - ever. It's a high holy holiday in the Jewish religion - PERIOD. It should be respected. And so easy for people to say that they wouldn't mind if the block party was on Xmas or Easter knowing that it would never happen as it's not even summer time!!! People love to talk put the shoe on the other foot and then talk. Now I know why I don't post that often on this site.

To the OP if I was you I would not sign your holiday should be respected and your children should be able to enjoy their block party.

Re: Would I be a really nasty neighbor?

I personally wouldn't care what day they picked (and wouldn't expect my neighbors to consider my religious holidays).

If it worked out that I could go, I'd sign and go to it. If it didn't because of whatever reason (religion, work etc) I'd not go and I wouldn't think more or less of anyone for not signing. Personally I would sign because I wouldn't want to hold the neighborhood back at all for their party but

I wouldn't think badly of anyone for not signing, it's just not a big deal to me. It's just a neighborhood block party!

Yom Kippur is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. There is no way that I would sign for a block party that day. First of all, your kids wouldn't be able to participate, and how are they going to feel about that. Second, there won't be any parking for your guests for the break fast, and who wants to walk from far away after you haven't eaten or drank anything for 25 hours! Also, I don't know if you attend synagogue, and if so, if you drive or not, but it would be a huge inconvenience for me to not be able to get on and off my street that day.

I'm usually a pretty accommodating person, but I think it's really rude to plan the block party that day. Are you the only Jewish family on your block?

ETA: We are fairly observant of Yom Kippur, and do not listen to music, watch TV, etc. It would impact the sanctity of the day for me to hear loud music outside, etc., which is another reason that I would not sign. I feel for you. I would be PISSED if it were me.

This is how I feel, just written much more eloquently than I did. However, I do see other peoples points of view! While I drive to temple, this is one of the holidays that I take pretty seriously! And honestly, I don't know how I would even begin to explain to my 4 year old son (who LOVES block parties) why we can't participate and everyone else can. I can see some major tantrumming going on that day! There are a few more jewish people on the block but I am not sure how observant they are.

I wouldn't sign it, i think it's rude they chose a holiday to have a block party and your kids wouldn't be able to attend. I don't think your being nasty i think the town or whoever planned it was rude for choosing Yom Kippur, if it were me, i would not sign.

THANK YOU!!!

This has been the basic premise of my POV on this thread the entire time.

What is wrong with people?? Why can't we be considerate of others??
