better deals= cablevision
better service=verizon

I had cablevision for YEARS and it was fine! but after years and years of the price going up we found that we were paying a ridiculous amount for cable and switched to fios bc cablevision seemed like they could not care less when i called threatening to leave if they couldn't lower my bill. (we were paying $230) So verizon offered a package at $170 and we jumped ship off to fios. DH is set in his ways and was SO used to optimum that when optimum came knocking on our door saying they want us back and offered a package for $132 after taxes...we just couldn't resist. It was a great deal, but here are some of the problems i've had since switching a few months ago:

optimum said they would notify verizon of the switch and cancel my contract with them and told me not to worry...they'd take care of it. Well that never happened and fios continued to charge me for almost another month. When i called optimum to tell them about the mistake they blamed fios and told me to call them and tell them i had switched on X date. Called fios they blamed optimum and told me to try to work it out with them, called optimum and they told me to show verizon the receipt of installation showing the date, called verizon and they gave me an address to mail the receipt to...this issue is still pending.

The new boxes are GARBAGE! hubby hates them and everyone who warned us was right. lots of problems with the DVD not recording or deleting things on it's own or just not working in general at times.

they promised me we'd have sports included in that $132...we SPECIFICALLY TOLD THE GUY we needed islanders hockey games and told him we needed MSG and NHL network. He said he added it...but he didn't. I tried to fight this with cablevision but they say there is nothing they can do...he added a sports package but not the one that gives us the hockey games we need and in order to get it we would need to pay extra. So really we are paying $141 a month. Still a better deal than fios...and not such a huge difference I'm gonna cry about it...but still. If I'm coerced to switch and promised a bill of $132 a month...that's what I expect. they credited me $20 for the inconvenience but that doesn't help me going forward.

Cablevision has a better starting deal, however verizon is not available at all in the town of brookhaven so if you live there your stuck with Cablevision or direct tv

Sorry u went thru this, but SO works for cablevision and said that when u switch... U were supposed to return ur cable boxes for fios after getting installed. He said they kept billing u bc u didnt turn in ur equipment. When u turn in ur equipment, thats when u tell them that ur canceling. When he said "we'll take care of it" ... He meant that cablevision takes care of ur termination fee and that's it.

Edited to add: He also said there's no way cablevision can just call up fios and cancel accounts... It would have to be the owner to verify identity and whatnot.

It's true it did take me a couple of weeks to return them as I went away on vacation for a week after installation and came back and my grandfather was in the hospital and had to drive my mom into the city to see him. but only because I was told they would contact verizon for me. He didn't just say "we'll take care of it" he also said "We'll contact verizon, don't worry about it" But bc we opted not to carry over our phone number they had no reason to call since they weren't transferring that #...except they didn't tell us that. So I figured, they'd cancel the contract, but fios would bill me for the boxes if i didn't return them, but that's not what happened.

as far as them not being able to do it...well i can understand that and in hindsight it makes sense but, if i had been told that from the getgo I would have taken care of it myself. I expect when somebody says "We'll do XYZ" that they will follow through with that

It was just a miscommunication... But how can u not expect to get billed if ur still holding onto the equipment? Like I said, 3rd parties can't cancel accounts... Cablevison does take care of ur termination fee, which is what he meant by saying "dont worry about it, we'll contact Verizon" because yes they contact them to pay the fee.

At this point, I would just mail in the copy of the installation date and it should hopefully be straightened out.

I just don't like posts that give Cablevision a bad rep over a miscommunication that wasnt their fault and ur saving $30 a month... Sounds like a plus to me. Don't get me wrong, I know their issues but as long as I'm saving money... I'll deal with certain things.

I love Verizon! It is more expensive....We switched to Cablevision to save on some money. That lasted 4 days and we switched back to Verizon. The quality, the options...so much better!

I did expect to be billed...for the equipment which could be returned and credited Not for services not used. (It's not like i kept it for months or even a month) I had a vacation planned beforehand and a family member in the hospital. Sorry, but my life came first and anyway I've already been credited for all the equipment that I returned so that's a non issue. I don't work in the field so I had no idea that they couldn't tell that NO DATA (Tv, phone or internet) was ingoing or outgoing. I was told something by a salesperson and I trusted them to do what they said they would do and I'd return the boxes after my vacation.

Honestly, if you don't like posts giving cablevision a bad name then you shouldn't get on blaming the customer in a public forum. It only makes cablevision look worse. You have no idea how many service calls back and forth with them I've had. You weren't here in my home when he said that to me...and even AFTER I called to inquire, cablevision still didn't say "oh yeah you were told wrong" or "it's a miscommunication, that's not what we do".

call it a miscommunication or whatever you want but My husband and I both know what was said to us. I specifically asked if I should call fios and tell them we switched and he said "we'll take care of it". It's not my job to know that wasn't possible...it was his.

ETA: and yes I am saving $30 a month...but it was supposed to be $40 as per that pink piece of paper we sat down on my front porch and discussed AND I have constant issues with my DVR. Even the installer and phone CSR admitted that the new boxes are horrible. It's an issue they know about.

it's ok. sorry if i got upset. It just really seemed like i was being blamed. In the end...it seems like it will all be worked out. It's just a bit of an inconvenience and a lesson and I only shared it to give honest feedback. We loved cablevision for YEARS and never had a problem until recently...but they do need to get better cable boxes. We wish we still had our old one.

Re: Cablevision or verizon

All I know is I got triple the amount of channels for less than half the price when I switched to Verizon.
A much better picture on my TV
No problems with anything ever
I also got much faster internet- like night and day faster.
Better calling plan on my home phone too.
IMO Cablevision is a joke and a rip off- but fortuneatly they are not the only game in town anymore.

Cablevision or verizon

I switched to Verizon years ago. Every now and then CV comes by to offer a stupid low price and I woudl rather pay more and actually get great service than deal with CV again.

Verizon has added channels wehn we were with CV all we did was lose them. I would call to complain and they didn't care.

The equipment is better with Fios. The guide pops up instantly....now more waiting on the iO. I actually hate when I visit the ILs cause they have CV and the boxes are slow.

Cablevision or verizon

I never had a problem with Optimum, but switched to Verizon in January to save money and get a better package. I'm not really a fan. Yes, I pay a little less and get more channels. I think their On Demand selection is much better than Optimum as well. But I actually find the Internet much slower. Suddenly, videos on our mobile devices are freezing, which never happened before. The other nice thing with Verizon is they were giving $300 gift cards.

We recently moved and Verizon completely screwed it up. I set up online to install at the new house on one day and disconnect at the old house the week after. I got an email confirming my install date, and when I logged in to my account it had the install date information. I took the day off from work and sat at the new house waiting for them. They were supposed to come between 9 and 12. Well, 12:15 rolled around and no one was there. I called Verizon and the woman told me there was an error with my order, no one was scheduled to come, and they wouldn't be able to send someone that day. I was furious. There was zero communication to me about the order. She wouldn't put a supervisor on the phone either. I finally asked her to transfer me to retention because she was useless and the person in retention was really great. He fixed everything, they came and installed the week after, and so far so good.

The other thing that annoyed me about moving my services with Verizon is that they increased my monthly rate. I'm locked in to a two year agreement, but because I moved they had to set me up with a different package, which increased my rate and took some channels away. Why do I have to hold up my end of the contract if they don't?

Verizon is so much better than cablevision--the picture quality, DVR, on demand features and customer service are far superior with Verizon. I am paying a lot less for better everything.
