Drive to Montreal

Has anyone done the drive to Montreal? A group of us are thinking about going in October but the flights are around $500.

How long is the drive?

Re: Drive to Montreal

Its about 7-7.5 hours. Its a pretty boring drive after Albany, scenic but boring. But if you have a group of people, it should be fun.

Drive to Montreal

Did it a few years ago with 3 friends. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We left after work , drove most of the way and then stopped a short way before the border to stay overnight and then drove the last couple of hours (if it was even that) to Montreal the next morning.

This, I did it for a girls' getaway. We stopped in Saratoga for lunch. It was a fun trip!

Re: Drive to Montreal

I broke it up into 2 days. The first day I drove to Albany and then I did the rest of the drive the next day. On the way home, I did it in about 4 days because I stopped in various places to sight see.

I did it a few weeks ago! Well, I actually drove past Montreal. Its a fine drive BUT you may want to try to get to the border either early morning or late evening. The border can take a lot of time so planning around that may help you out.

Drive to Montreal

I did it with my kids some years ago. It wasn't bad. Montreal was a lot of fun.

We loved the old French quarter and the food at an Ethiopian restaurant in the French side of the city was awesome. It was served not on plates, but on a large pizza pan sized thin bread made of lentils and each entree was placed directly on the part of the bread in front of each person and was eaten with our fingers using more bread to scoop it up. Very different.

My daughter, who had a friend from Tanzania, explained that when eating with your fingers in Africa that it is not polite to put more than up to the first joint of your finger into your mouth. So, basically, for good manners you are supposed to use your fingertips mostly.

It's LONG and can be tiring...

You may want to consider Amtrak - you might think I'm nuts but it is a very relaxing and VERY economical way to travel... and if you have a group, it can be really nice.

It is also incredibly scenic.

Whenever I can't afford a flight or don't want to shell out the money for one (places like Quebec, Maine, etc) I do Amtrak. It's a great way to travel. Chat Icon

I bring my laptop, do work, surf the net, watch movies - makes the time FLY.

I'd say by 7am or after 10:30.

It's not a bad drive at all and when I went last time, we hit a big snowstorm too.

Just try to miss morning traffic on LI and Westchester and then rush hour traffic in the Albany area and you'll be fine. So I'd leave at either 5am or 10am..ish.

I think it has to be more than 5 hours...it used to take me 4 hour and change to get to Binghamton, NY when I was in college...

I think it took us about 6 hours in total? It's a much quicker drive than going to Niagara Falls, I know that. Montreal is one of my favorite places to go to! You will have a blast. Go to Old Montreal for food and visiting, it feels like Europe. Great time of the year to go as well. The drive there is actually really beautiful on the countryside.
