I hate fireworks!!!
Im sorry but all of you who mention it is only one day a year have obviously never spent fourth of July with a Veteran. And they can't just "deal with it" for one night a year. The issues these men and women come home with are not always controllable.

We don't need to "lighten up." Last time I checked, we were allowed not to like something that other people do like, especially something that can be legitimately dangerous, and scare children and animals. Plus if it's only one night a year, why was I still hearing them while I was trying to sleep last night, as well as for several days before the 4th?

It's actually been more like a week in my neighborhood.
I like the pretty ones that light up but the loud ones that make a nice squeal and a loud pop as I am putting my kids to bed - imo are pointless.

Personally I think the professionally, legally done ones are fine and yes, although they annoy me, they are worth it for the kids. However, no one needs to lighten up when it comes to idiots who are endangering themselves and everyone around them, not to mention breaking the law.

I have no reason to dislike them, but boy for many days, it does get annoying... that's all. plus, it's 11:27 and it's still going on in my hood.

I love fireworks. When I was a kid every street in NYC was lit up with non professional fireworks. My dad used to buy them by the garbage bag full and he was like santa claus on 4th of july with his bags of fireworks. I remember the feeling of wonder it gave me and still to this day fireworks evoke those feelings of wonder, nostalgia for my childhood, memories with my dad and pride in my country on the one day everybody actually seemed to bond and celebrate our country.
There will ALWAYS be idiots who do things the wrong or unsafe way...that stands for any activity...not just fireworks. But People lighting off fireworks doesn't bother me at all.
I don't like things like M80's though...to me they serve no purpose except to be loud and obnoxious...but fireworks that can be visually enjoyed are A-O.K with me.

I like them on 4th of July but 4 days before and 4 days after is getting really annoying. My poor dog wont come out from under the bed after 7pm for the last week!

Actually I meant at all times. On the third, fourth, fifth etc. I am still not sure why I should lighten up, especially since I have my own feelings, just have others have theirs.

I posted about this same topic on my local town's moms Facebook page. i literally got virtually jumped, was told to deal with it, laughed at, to,d to turn the ac or radio on, and nasty comments were sent my way. I left that group because I can't stand juvenile responses from adults. I don't understand the need for fireworks after the fourth and leading up to the fourth. I worry about my house being caught on fire by a person who thinks they know what they are doing.

They are illlegal in NY right? But nobody stops anyone from shooting them off.
So it's like they are legal pretty much.
I have to respond to this -
A: Yes they are illegal and there are plenty of detectives working on busting the "wholesalers" on Long Island. Note that there are usually a few arrested sometime in May/June
B:They are illegal in NY, but by the time the cops get there the people are usually done with what they have or there isn't enough "evidence" to arrest them
C:I'm a 911 operator, we are generally 200 or so calls behind on a weekend like this past weekend. The cops have to go to emergencies first and when someone calls 911 for a heart attack or a baby not breathing, that call gets priority. There are only so many cops per area so they can't possibly get to EVERY call for fireworks. They get to them, but not before responding to an actual emergency.
They are not legal, but think about this: you call the cop because the guy next door is shooting fireworks, cop comes right away, arrests said guy, arrest process takes anywhere from 1-4 hours. Who is going to respond to the other 50 calls for people shooting fireworks in that particular area? So, the cop goes, tells the guy to cool it, moves to the next call...it's the only way to handle the volume we get on a holiday.

I love them. But i love the pretty ones.. not hte stupid ones that just go boom with nothing ot look at. they are pointless to me.
I still love them even though as a kid, a schoolmate had their hand blown off by one. He lit it, waited, it didn't go off so he picked it up and boom! i think it was a pineapple or something. poor kid.

my cop friend got a ton of calls for 'gun shots' and was pissed bc they were all fireworks.
i was out on the 4th and the people across the street from the bbq we were at got a $150 ticket for 'smoke'... apparently they had a few sparklers in their yard. the cops left and they lit off quite the show!
