Re: Where is your baby sleeping when coming home from the hospital?

Baby girl will be in a bassinet next to us as well. We are in a temporary place so I don't want to go through the trouble of setting up a nursery. We are in contract on a house and hoping to close in August and move in September. So we will set up her nursery there and transition her to the crib, when she will be anywhere from 4-10 weeks old depending on when the actual move takes place.

I'm going to try BF so I like the idea of having her next to us initially. DH is only taking 2 weeks off, so I have no doubt he will abandon us and go sleep in the guest room. Chat Icon He wakes up really early, has a very long commute, and works ridiculous hours so he will need to get some sleep.

DS absolutely REFUSED to sleep in the crib. It was just too "big" for him if that makes sense. He freaked out and cried everytime he went in there. We did not get a bassinet. He literally slept in his bouncy seat for naps and at night for the first 3 months. He was perfectly content that way so until he was ready for the crib, that's where he was.

My daughter slept in our room in her swing for the first three months. She didn't like being flat in the bassinet or crib. I think of the newborn babies like the cradling feeling of a swing or one of those Rock and Play sleepers. But every baby is different and you learn to do what keeps them happy FAST! Chat Icon

He will be in his crib from day 1. I"m planning on having him nap in the rock n play .. swing .. etc.. but when he goes down for the night (uh hopefully for the night! Chat Icon ) he will be in his crib in his bedroom!

We kept my son in a bassinet in our bedroom for about the first 8 weeks. This was more for my convenience than anything else. It was so much easier to just reach over and grab him and feed him and pump every 3 hours than to have to walk down the hall.

I do not think there is anything wrong with starting baby out in a crib though. You do what works for you, your DH, and your house!

This.

But mine were with me far longer than 8 weeks. No trouble transitioning to a crib when it was time.

i kept DS in the bassinet until he was 4 months old, and then i moved him into his crib. I think i was just very nervous. I don't think i will have DD in the bassinet for that long, once she starts sleeping through the night she will go into her crib.

We had every intention if our son sleeping in his crib right away. He spits up though and can't sleep flat right after feelings so he is in the rock n play instead. All I can say is the best laid plans....

I wouldn't be set on any one thing..be open to seeing what your baby needs.

My dd was in her crib one week after having her. She is and has always been an amazing sleeper! This baby is going to be in our room till it can sleep through the night. The kids will be sharing a room and I don't want the new baby waking up my dd.

At first he (and I) slept in the living room. We have a very high bed and I couldn't get in it after a c-section! That was only for about 3 days. Then we did the RnP next to our bed for the next 6 weeks. He went into the crib at 7 weeks. It was very easy to have him next to us- I could just lean over and pick up when he cried. You'll see what works for you when the time comes!

DS 1 was in our room in the RNP sleeper for a few months. Then he slept in the RNP in his room for a bit. He had really bad reflux and until that was under control, he couldn't sleep flat. We tried elevating his mattress with a wedge but it just wasn't as cozy as the RNP.

We are hoping to get the twins into their cribs from day 1. Their room is a few steps from ours. If it doesn't happen, we will have to figure out an alternative sleeping arrangement. DS's head got a little flat from the RNP so I'm a little nervous to use it again. We have a pack n play that they can probably share as well. I worry about having them together at the beginning and trying to transition them to sleep alone.

Just as curiosity, for those of you who had the baby sleep in your room, how did you do it once DH went back to work?
I was thinking once DH goes back to work (after 1 week) I would just sleep in her room in the glider or something. This way when she gets up in the middle of the night I can get up so DH can sleep.
Or is that wishful thinking?

i think that is very nice thinking, but you need every bit of rest as well. When i had DS, if he started fussing i would take him out of the bassinet, and then go into the living room, until he was fed or went back to sleep, but then i put him right back in the bassinet, and i slept in my bed.

Re: Where is your baby sleeping when coming home from the hospital?

We had intention of him being in a bassinet in our room till 3 months and then transition to his room/crib after that. Of course best laid plans never work, DS wanted NOTHING to do with sleeping flat on his back till around 5 months (at which point he slept on his stomach hehe). He slept in the RnP in our room for about 3-4 weeks but I could never sleep with him next to me in our room so he went across the hall in his RnP to his nursery (didn't need a monitor because he was literally across the hall, no problem hearing him ehhe). At 5 months we transitioned him from RnP to crib much more successfully. My advice is make all the plans you want and then wait for the baby to come and rearrange all of them lol! Congrats:)

Good luck with your plan and hope it works. Lo is 5w and crib was the plan. After 1st night in hospital I had friend drop off bassinet. She hates the crib, she slept in her swing for 2 nights then hated that. At the moment she is sleeping on me. Once passed out I will put her in her bassinet where I wait and see if she wakes up again if she does I take her out and we cuddle or bf till she falls asleep again. When she wakes up for next feeding if I'm functioning ill feed her shell pass out and will go into bassinet again. If not shell sleep on me for a couple of hours till she needs to feed again. None of this is how I planned it. I've learned to just go with what she wants.

DD slept in her room in the RNP almost right away, I tried to have her on our room but every time she made a sound we jumped, so she went into her room which is about 5 steps from ours

Re: Where is your baby sleeping when coming home from the hospital?

DS is going in the crib! My first we had in the co-sleeper in our room for the first 7 weeks. My son (almost 3) runs into our room every night so I don't need him waking up the baby or crashing into the co-sleeper so I'm just avoiding the situation and putting baby in crib from night 1. Hope he likes it! lol

When DS woke up crying, I got up and took him out of the room. Changed his diaper, etc in his room and then went to the living room to watch TV and feed him (all rooms were on the same floor). I tried to get DS ASAP to avoid disrupting DH's sleep but yeah, I wouldn't set the goal of sleeping in the glider. You need to get sleep too! And in a bed!

You can plan all you want, but it'll really depend on when the baby arrives. We wanted DS in a bassinet in our room, which lasted 1 night. He NEVER slept in it. So we slept him in a swing for a few weeks, but I wasn't sleeping well with him in our room. At a few weeks old he put him in the crib in his own room (with a baby monitor) and never looked back. Don't worry about it so much now. You'll figure it out when you have to!

I completely agree with this. With DS, he slept in his crib from day 1. Now with DD, she slept one night in her crib but from then on has slept in the rnp next to our bed out of convenience. She didn't want to be in the crib yet and I'm ok with that. Each baby is different so you'll see what happens when he gets here!

Re: Where is your baby sleeping when coming home from the hospital?

Honestly, it's more of a convenience to keep them in your room for night time feedings. But if you don't mind getting up and going into another room then it's up to you.
