IMO being morbidly obese isn't a legit disability either, and that is also used to skip the line there, I've seen it with my own eyes.

You read that person's medical records and determined that the only reason they got to skip the line was because they were morbidly obese?

Nice - did they show them to you openly, or did you have to ask for them to hand them over for your review?

No, its not a disability as defined by the ADA. Obesity of that nature is not caused by any ADA recognized disability that I know of. Can you name one?

I don't think you understood what she was saying. How do you know that they didn't have a disability but also happened to be obese? Did you talk to them? See their medical records? Or did you just look at them, saw that they were obese and just assumed that was why they skip the line?

If they are in a motorized scooter because they can't walk its pretty obvious that is the reason why they can't leave the scooter at the gate and stand on line.

Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World

I'll bite...

My father is obese.

Why? how is that a disability? Because he blew out his knee serving this country and cut up his hand too. Neither is enough for disability by itself (other than his knee but not enough for some). but you add that bad knee to regular life and you get a cyst that goes badly diagnosed until it festers and he nearly loses his foot whiel they remove it, then the recovery goes bad and he can't walk as much as he can't take this or that because of this or that and then his liver starts to fail and his kidney function is just at 10% but the stuff that helps his kidney function worsens his liver and his blood pressure is now bad and so he has diabieties now but his cholesterol is good because he can only eat certain things for the various things wrong with him, then he gets another cyst that nearly kills him and after surgeries (he's still working on healing nearly a year later), and his diabieties have been resolved, his kidney function is over 18% but his liver is still a mess and it hurts painfully to walk but ....

Hey .. he's just a fat man in a scooter.. why SHOULD get any special treatment? I get him out of that scooter as much as I can.. so then he's just a really fat man.

What a slob right? How dare he take advantage and sit with his granddaugther at the front of a show? How dare he smile through the pain, laugh through the sharp pains and act like nothing's wrong with him when he's really just pushing through it to make my daughter happy?

Actually he hates going to theme parks because he doesn't like the way people judge him. But he'll go for AJ. We go on non-peak dates and times to make it easier on him (both mentally and physically).

The NY thingie is just sad.. not so shocking as it is annoying. Money rules all.. always has, always will.

I knew the thread would turn into which special need is deserving of the guest assistance card, and which type of special need isn't.

That is GREAT that someone's friend goes to Disney with their spectrum kids, and they wait in the general line and deal with the meltdowns, the anxiety, etc. We did for about 8 years, and now we don't, and we are very thankful that Disney offers such an accommodation. It makes it a MUCH MORE enjoyable trip. Why would anyone want their child to have a miserable time at Disney? It would be great if we DIDN'T need a special accommodation to have a good time, and wait in the regular line with everyone else. I think most people would trade a guest assistance card for a TYPICAL child or family member, with no needs at all.

Disney doesn't need to crack down. What they do WORKS. Yes there is abuse, but the benefits of the accommodations they offer make the families with needs come BACK to Disney.

Many disabilities are "hidden", so it's really no one else's place to judge. The obsese person could have heart problems, can't stand for long, etc. You just have NO Idea. Haven't we had this debate on the handicap parking threads?

Honestly I don't buy that these upper crust moms plan to use a service they know is using the disability pass. I have plenty of friends that hire guides for disney that are not part of the disney VIP program. The guides all know how to work the park and use the fast pass system that is available to everyone. They charge about the same as the article claims this one does. To me, this is just another attempt to get people to hate wealthy people in this country. And it seems like a way for the person interviewed to promote their own book.

Completely agree.. We did this when I went down there. Used fass pass system. My children still walked. Our lines were less. The service was offered. I paid. One trip a year and I wanted it to be stress less.

Not new news. There have been posts on disboards for a while about some private vip companies that people were betting used the GAC passes. Sad abuse of a system people really need. Then the ones who do need it will have problems when they change the system to provent those issues.

I am sure there are slimy services out there that abuse the system... But to think that these wealthy upper east side moms are bragging about it is just absurd to me. The price is no cheaper than a ton of other services that I have heard about. I think people need to be careful when they read an article like this and believe it is factual. Take a look at the source! She is writing a book about these women! she is clearly trying to promote her book with these claims. This is half the reason that our country is such a mess right now - because people just believe everything they read in the media without even thinking it thru!!!

Re: Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World

It is possible that this story is exaggerated, but the fact is, there is a lot of abuse of this card going on. My college age relative's good friend is a cast member at Disney as well as a lot of my coworkers having annual passes (I live less than 2 hours from Disney) and they even say that there are groups of teens and families that do get the cards just to skip the lines, they are heard talking about it. There are tons of online chats about ways to cheat the system at disney like tricks with the fast passes, and telling people to ask for a card because they cannot refuse one if asked. Disney is looking at this because there have been problems with abuse of the passes causing the fastpasses distributed that day to run out 1 hour from the park opening because the fast passes have to take into account how many guest assistant passes there are.

Unfortunately, this abuse is going to ruin it for the people that actually need it.

Fast passes have nothing to do with a GAC. Disney has no clue which rides the GAC holders will be riding during the day. GAC and fast pass are completely separate. Fast passes run out on the popular rides within an hour of opening, and that has always been the case.

Not to mention, I could be at MK, and hop over the HS later that day and go on TSM. The TSM fastpass sytem (one that typically runs out in an hour), has NO way of knowing I plan to visit that park that day with our GAC. The GAC is given one time, and covers your entire trip. They don't know which parks you will be visiting with it either.

How gac limit fast passes

They know which rides are most popular and how many gac are being given out that day.

Like I said above, they have no clue which parks you will be visiting on which day. The GAC covers your entire stay. You get it one time. Not each day. I don't buy that theory that someone is posting on the internet. Sorry. And that link actually talks about Fast Pass + (not the same as Fast Pass) and Disneyland. It doesn't say Fast Passes are reduced at WDW due to GAC users.

It talks about the problem of abuse at Disneyland in California and how the new system is supposed to help reduce the abuse. It doesn't mention WDW because they have a greater capacity, but with more and more passes given out the same happen. It truly would be a wonderful thing if all passes were given out to those in need, but this is not the case. They know how many gac's are out each day and they have to account for up to 5 guests per card. No they don't know exactly how many people will be in each park, but they have a pretty good estimate. Advance sales of tickets in addition to the time of year will tell them what they need to know.

Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World

With all the hoopla and articles going on about this, I actually found an ad on craigslist today for this exact service. The poster "claims" to have a disability and an annual pass and according to the post "is much less then the other services out there". $500 an hour!

Re: Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World

I feel like I have posted about this everywhere, but I don't buy this story. There may be some truth to it, but the articles are SO poorly researched.

For one thing, being in a wheelchair does not get you front of the line access. At WDW 90% of the main queues are accessible. You'd have to have a specific disability that would limit you waiting in crowds or in the sun, etc.

Second of all, since you don't have to prove a disability, someone reasonably motivated and unethical could just fake their own disability. You wouldn't need to hire someone.

Also, i REALLY resent people assuming someone is in a wheelchair because they're obese and there isn't a medical condition behind it. A lot of disabilities can cause decreased mobility which can lead to obesity. I have seven herniated discs. SEVEN. Last time I was at WDW I was hurting so bad from the walking that I really wanted to get a wheelchair, but I didn't for a few reasons, but one was that I didn't want to be the fat person in the wheelchair being judged by everyone.

I'm sure some people put themselves in those wheelchairs from too many twinkies. I'm sure some could walk if they wanted to, but are lazy. But that's not everyone. It's AMAZING how much "overweight" people get judged every day.

This is an all time low! Unbelievable.

If you are rich enough to be able to pay $1000 a day for VIP access, you can afford to pay $3000 for the legit Disney VIP tour.

I personally would rather not go to Disney than wait in 100 degree weather for 2 hours per ride.

Exactly. which is why you should be questioning the validity of this article!!!! Honestly people!!! WAKE UP!!!!

I feel like I need to start a post on the fact that our country is being ruined by people believing every single thing that they read either online or in the press!!!! Think about it - if it doesn't make sense to you, maybe it's because it isn't true!!!
