You may want to try MLSLI.com. They have a rental option. I understand your concern. I moved from the mid-west and paid less for a 3 bedroom HOUSE than a basement apartment in NY.  You'll find something... Dont get discourarged.

moving to Long Island, looking for inexpensive 2 bedroom apt.
I just wonder what you think about a small 2 bedroom townhouse for 1,200 per month. I am estimating utilities etc to come upto $250 more. Is this realistic?
What are the disadvantages of this type of accomocation as opposed to apartments?

i recommend looking at coop rentals. They typically include everything but electricity and offer the privacy of a complex but with a much lower price tag. Periodically there are units available in my complex. We also used to live in a coop complex in North Babylon. However, I still do not know what price range you're looking at. My perspective is totally out of whack on rentals in Long Island. I am still living in a town where I pay 550 + utilities for a 2 bedroom apt, almost 600 sq ft. Real estate managers laugh when I tell them I am looking for a 2 bedroom at around 1200. Maybe I am not looking at the right places, or maybe I need to adjust my perspective.
I'm still searching..

Kazi.. I just started with a company in Pittsburgh and we are looking to move that way. I cant even believe how much cheaper everything is.
Good luck on your search in NY.. Maybe your wifes company can hook you up with a real estate or some information close to her job. I would email her boss or HR because you never know who knows someone looking for renters..

I agree about checking with your wife's company. Also, I don't know how big of a company it is, but I know a lot of companies will pay for relocation expenses (moving fees, etc.) which will often include a broker's fee if you are renting. So if that fee would be covered, it may be easier for you to work with a real estate agent, or just contact various real estate agencies. Because rentals are in such short supply on Long Island, it can help to give your info and what you are looking for to different agents. Then, if they get something in that fits the bill, they can contact you and you can get a jump on seeing it.
I would definitely confine your search to Suffolk if you are hoping to get a 2 bedroom in your price range, and the further east, the better.

I was looking at some reviews for Knoll Gardens but could not find one for Setauket Knoll Gardens. However the reviews for Knoll Gardens in NJ were very discouraging.
It would be great if anyone knows about this one.

Kazi, if you're open to looking at larger 1BRs then you should look into the Lake Grove apartments too. They have large 1BR units and I'm pretty sure there are some opening April 1st too.

I just realized my friend has an apartment in her home that is becoming available. I think it is 1400 all inclusive. It has a good sized master and a small BR for a child really. Brand new inside. Washer Dryer incl. It is in Kings Park-right near Commack. It is a basement, but has decent natural light for the doorway and a couple of windows.
