We used to have this issue with a neighbor. She'd feed the cats and they would poop and pee not just on her lawn but her neighbors. Eventually she started trapping the adults and surrendering to the shelter and gave the kittens n mama to the vet. Granted I know that some cats were euthanized but I think it was the only way she could balance her heart and still be a good neighbor.

I managed to catch one and TNR him and vet him OUT OF MY OWN POCKET to aide in the reduction of the population.
It's not my fault they were there, it's because some insensitive ass didn't spay or neuter their cat and then decided to allow it outside. Or, any number of reasons. The feral population isn't BECAUSE of people like me or KittyTax, it's bc of nimwits who don't properly vet their animals and dump them or allow them to be "indoor/outdoor" cats.
If you yourself stopped whining and actually tried to help resolve the problem by trapping ONE cat and having it spayed or neutered you'd be a part of the solution.

I have an honest question for the feeders, something that I saw someone else bring up in this thread but was never answered--
These untamed, nuisance-causing cats-- what makes them "different" than other wildlife and worth encouraging? Squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, even rats really could be lumped into the same category. Is it because you own cats as pets?
Because I can't catch a raccoon, squirrel or deer & get it fixed and therefore stop the problem. Because there is no food the cats are 'meant' to eat so they destroy the ecosystem with what they do eat or rip open your garbage. Because there are no natural predators of the cats to control the population. Nor are there with the deer anymore which is why the government allows hunting because no one wants animals starving to death as a solution. TRUST ME, I would be so happy if I could get the deer fixed!! We don’t catch deer & raccoons and take them to the pound to be euthanized, they are allowed to live their lives outside as annoying as they are to the people who live with them. You guys think cats are a problem?? Try living with deer 
The cats are an introduced invasive species, they're not meant to be out in the wild in our area so they do damage to native species. They kill songbird populations. Destroy rabbit, mice & squirrel populations. They are not meant to “eat the wild” in our environment so as with any introduced species, they mess up the native species that are supposed to be here. Of course they still kill the occasional bird etc but not the amount that would be killed if something wasn’t done. People caused the problem, not the cats, by letting them out unaltered.
I’m not encouraging them, I’m doing the complete opposite. I stop the cycle, if you read my posts I moved into my house and there were 20+ cats already alive & thriving on my property and I wasn't feeding them, and there would have been more had I not caught them, because some were kittens and once they were old enough, they would have had kittens and one was a pregnant female. Now there are 10 cats. I came into an existing problem and I solved it. I feel like there is this impression that I put these cats here, how did me feeding them encourage them?? They were doing just fine before I moved in.
Listen, I am not going to defend my position on this, it’s already been decided & proven that TNR is a valid solution which is why it has government support and why the government protects these cats. If you don’t understand it or you don’t know how it works or haven’t looked at the statistics on it, then get educated on it, I’m not debating a debate that was already done. If anyone wants to learn about it there are plenty of organizations that exist to educate on it and will answer every single one of the questions you may have.

While I think its great that some have worked to take care of the situation in their area.
I do not think it is the OP responsibility to have to TNR any of these cats. While feeding cats will not start a propblem I do feel that it can make it worse and the neighbor that is doign this needs to be the one responsible. THe OP should be able to live in her home without the smell and nuisance of the ferals.
I do not think feeding them is a solution and if people do feed them they they should then consider those ferals their pets. And take care of them as such.

It seems TNR places a financial responsibility on those who do participate in it which is probably why many do not. It is basically saying that if I want the cats in my area to not be able to reproduce I have to call to get them TNR'd and then I am responsible for feeding them for the next decade or more? No thank you. I have my own pets that I chose to have that I take care of.
If someone wants to claim they're doing what is right for an animal then they should actually take care of them... If a person wants to feed these cats then also provide them with the other things they need to live a healthy life - shleter, regular veterinary care and vaccinations, flea medication, grooming... ONLY feeding them is not doing them any favors. Are these TNR'd cats retrapped to get vaccines every year or are they trapped once and that is that? What about feline leukemia, aids, diabetes? Is anyone making sure these cats don't have those diseases and getting them the treatment they need for that? Or are some of these animals just suffering and because they're being fed a blind eye is being turned to these other issues?

A family member of mine lives in a lovely, residential area. She has been feeding different feral cats for 20 years. They are all captured , fixed and given a rabies vaccine. She has been able to find homes for some of them. She has even built a little doggie house for them to sleep in during bad weather. She has never had a complaint or an issue in 20 years ( and this is a very upscale area where people would flip out if they felt there was any disruption of the peace). Clearly, there is responsible way to do things in life. I think it is wonderful to help an animal out who would otherwise suffer. The cats she feeds are healthy and happy. Her efforts have allowed innocent felines to have a better quality of life. Finally, I was too disgusted to read the whole thread but did people really mention poisoning these poor cats? I'm too appalled to even comment.

I think this thread for the most part was productive. To sets of opinions and reasonings but there's just the fact.
You can do stuff to deter them
Some people are more generous than others
Some hate them but Most won't commit a crime to get rid of them.
Never thought my habit of stalking a neighborhood would actually make sense. LOL I always go to the place I WANT to live and sit out in my car for an hour or so at all times of the day to see what its like for a week or so. Too many loud kids, parties or something I'd look elsewhere. Never thought to look for cat shit. But I like cats so.. ? *shrug*
Guess you should check the lawn of your home to be for cat shit if it bothers you that much.
Kudos to those who do so much. You are better than I to be sure. I just give them water when its super hot (hello Texas) and yes, I know they use the two HUGE bush/shrub things in my back yard (against my back fence, larger than the fence by two and as wide) as shelter. Doesn't bother me. Frankly I wish Cats could keep dogs out of my backyard! Hubby and I agree we will not feed them.
My area has three 'stray' cats. Lovely creatures. Obviously cared for. And no kittens in the 3yrs I've been here so I assume everyone's fixed. No late night screams of umm... well.. cat lovin?
I can see how the cat thing is annoying. We lived behind a chinese restaurant and they had tons. But they left us alone because we had a cat! haha Most cats leave our place alone because we have cats. Go figure. Our cats are indoor only though. Personal preference.
ETA: the other thing.. comments.. ignore them.

This was/is our issue. You can choose to TNR or do what you think is humane but once it infringes on the neighbors it becomes an issue wether wanted or not.
As much as I love animals I feel that it s abigger picture than just food. Sometimes Euthanasia is the most humane thing to do. Just giving food with no medical care is sometimes worse.

This is why I do not think even domesticated cats should be let out to roam the neighborhood. And I never really understood it.
I am not allowed to let my dog run free so why can people let their cats run free.

So, as I was dropping off some bags and cans of cat food to a woman who cares for several colonies she told me how deeply concerned she was about one of her ferals who hasnt been seen since the blizzard. She apparently was a long haired tortie. Said the biggest concern for the long haired ones in the snow is the risk of freezing to the ground. Imagine being frozen in place during a blizzard and freezing/starving to death. I do something because it is the right thing to do
The people feeding the cats is not what caused the cats to be there. It is people that do not spay/neuter their pets. It is people that dump their cats outside to fend for themselves.
For those that have been educated on TNR and would like to help out:
f you are in the CENTEREACH/SELDEN or nearby area in Suffolk County , LI and would like to volunteer in helping to transport feral cats to and from Vet for spay/neuters, please contact: [email protected]. ALSO NEEDED:Volunteers to let cat recover after surgery, usually just overnight in a safe quiet space.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

I had this problem as well. Someone told me to sprinkle chili powder around the perimeter of my property. It's not toxic to the cats but they stay away from it. I put it all over the place and I never had the problem again.
I gotta try this, one cat is crapping... my hubby always looks but one time didnt realize he stepped in it-til hew was in house and my pregoo smells smelled it
