Why do you say this? South Huntington is nice and it's considered Huntington Station. Every town for the most part has its "bad" sections. I may be bias as I live in South Huntington but I used to live in Babylon Village and I can tell you I am happier in South Huntington then I would of been in West Babylon. Not knocking WB. To get back on topic it all comes down to personal preference and lifestyle. If the OP has any questions about HS please fell free to PM me.

I agree I have lived in Huntington station for my whole like all towns had not so nice areas look at the area you are interested and ask neighbors and go at different times of day to see it. I feel extremely safe in my neighborhood

Of the towns you mentioned too, I think they are all pretty decent areas. I have heard certain parts of Westbury can be a little sketchy.
Westbury south of Old Country Road is better than north. Basically houses in Westbury that are zoned for East Meadow SD are good.

Before buying our house we lived in Westbury and DD was in the East Meadow SD. If we could have found a house there we would have definitely stayed. We were zoned for Bowling Green elementary and Clark middle/high school. She did 3rd-5th in elementary and I have nothing but good things to say about the district and their activities.
Just keep in mind, there's a bunch of houses in Westbury/EMSD that are levitt houses so they have no basements.

Really good point. With any town, it's so important to look at the actual school district and what the specific neighborhood is like. The actual name of the town, IMO, is the least important factor out of these three.
You have some highly desirable named towns located on the border of undesirable named towns. It doesn't mean that one block is beautiful and wonderful and the other is ridden with crime. They could both be very nice or both be awful....like I said, it depends on the neighborhood and school district.
You have to think of how "bad" is being defined too. When I hear people call certain neighborhoods "bad," it makes me realize that they have never truly seen an area that is really full of crime, gangs, and so forth.
Very true. I am also a social worker so am not scared away by diversity, but there are still districts that I would personally stay away from.
A lot of people poo-poo my district because of the large immigrant population, but I have had an EXCELLENT response from the district when I needed to have DS evaluated through CPSE.
Maybe it's because of the large immigrant population, they want to make sure he gets all the help he needs, who knows.
Also, in the particular area I live, most of our neighbors have lived here for generations.
I think it is good to get an insiders opinion though on districts.
I know that too many people poo-poo areas that don't actually live in them.
I have heard bad things about Seaford and Massapequa too which is primarily upper class and white, because of that reason.........large numbers of kids are left on their own with their parents money so there's a drug problem because of that.

Huntington Station covers a very large area. There are some REALLY nice (and SAFE) areas, like South Huntington near Melville and Dix Hills. SD #13 is not bad at all and in fact over the past few years its ratings have gone up. I agree to stay away from the areas by the train station.

What district are you in?
I worked in Amityville for 2 years on Broadway. I met a lot of people in that area and honestly they were awesome. I loved the community there, it was so fun.
I can't speak of the district, but I met a lot of people who went through Amity and Copiague.... Super nice, super smart people.
It was on the border of Massapequa and I heard the same thing about drugs.

I'm in the Copiague SD.
My area is pretty solid middle/working class.
In fact, this is what I like about it, because I don't feel as much of a need to keep up with the Joneses, since we wouldn't be able to afford to.
A lot of my neighbor's kids are also going to or have graduated from good colleges (Albany, NYU).
A neighbor's wife across the street is in med school right now, and they both grew up around here.

All good districts and not far from Huntington train station. I grew up in E. Northport, moved away for a few years and we are back. Could not be happier.

As far as school districts, I think it's a matter of doing your own research and looking for what's important to you -- do you want a small or large district? small or large classes? do you want strong academics (lots of AP classes offered, high % of students going on to 4 year colleges)? Strong arts/music programs? Good sports programs? Diversity? Full-day kindergarten? Before/after care? Princeton Plan or traditional neighborhood schools?
It's hard to say what's "good" or not because it's really a subjective determination based on your own wants/needs.
Lori recommended a good site - www.greatschools.org. A similar site is www.schooldigger.com. Those sites provide hard data/stats (as does Newsday), but also some anecdotal evidence about the schools from parent reviews.
You might also want to look at the school district website's -- many of them provide GREAT information about the school, and you can get a feel for the town/community. Also, looking at a town's chamber of commerce website can be another helpful resource.
I am familiar with all of the areas you are considering. My office is in N. Bellmore, and I grew up in Seaford, but I also do a lot of work in western Suffolk. I currently have clients looking in Greenlawn and E. Northport, and I've recently sold homes in W. Islip and Lindenhurst. I am currently selling a house for an LIF'er in Westbury (the west village area -- north of Old Country Rd. but west of Post Ave. is quite lovely, if you are ok with Westbury school district). You might want to look at homes in Carle Place schools as well as the Salisbury part of Westbury (East Meadow schools).
I agree that Seaford is a great area with affordable homes and a good LIRR commute (as I said, I grew up there). The surrounding towns are all great, too, but taxes can be high, esp. in Wantagh.
You may want to consider Hicksville - It's a great commute to NYC (LIRR hub) and convenient to all parkways and VERY low taxes for Nassau.
Bethpage is also a great area, and Levittown is also very affordable (although taxes can be higher). If you are in Island Trees schools (which encompass Seaford, Bethpage, and Levittown), your taxes are more affordable.
But I also agree that the areas you are considering are a bit all over the place, both in terms of geography and "vibe," if you will. I think it's probably a good idea to drive through those areas, if you haven't already, and see what you can get in the different areas, but then narrow your search a bit. I find my customers who have the best house hunting experience are those who have narrowed down their geographic search to a town or a few towns and then limit their search to that. Location is really the most important thing to decide on -- you can change a lot of things about a house, but you can never change it's location!

I completely agree with all of the points you made. There are definitely a few districts I would stay away from, but, like you, I'm not afraid of diversity. My school district is also diverse, and it's a great school district. DH and I do not have children yet, and once we do, we're going the Catholic school route for religious reasons. Otherwise, I'd have no problem with them going to our district.
My neighborhood is very, very similar to yours too...people who have lived here for years and years. And insider perspective is SO important. Too many people drive through a community, see diversity, and, unfortunately, they use this as an excuse to label the town "bad." It's very sad IMO. Talk to people who actually live (or lived) in the area.
Sorry for the lengthy posts...I just happen to be rather passionate about this topic  I hate seeing communities labeled as "bad" for unnecessary reasons.

When someone says Huntington Station, I do not think of So. Huntington even though they share a zip, I mean north of 25.

I knew what area you were referring to, because my friends lived there........right near the train station.
I agree with you btw that it's pretty rough over there.
This also goes back to what has been said about having insider's perspective.
I have been on some of the side streets with nice houses during the daytime, but after hearing why my friends were selling, as a parent, I wouldn't consider it.
I'd be more concerned about what was going on outside my door, not so much inside the school.
I still like to live in a bubble that schools (for the most part) are pretty safe.
ETA: For the record, I probably would not buy a house on some of the streets North of Montauk in my town either for similar stuff.
We have two sets of friends that used to live in that part of Copiague and there were lots of break ins, illegal apartments with 10 people living in them, etc.
Like someone mentioned though, there's bad areas in all towns ;).

We live in West Babylon and love it. As long as you are south of the southern state, then you will go to west babylon schools.
When you get closer to little east neck road, some go to North Babylon schools with a West Babylon address. If you have specific questions, feel free to contact me. My husband and his family all grew up here and am happy that I moved here. I grew up in West Islip, and am much happier here.

I've lived in WB for 20 years. My oldest just graduated HS and I can not say enough about what a great education he received. My kids have all been involved in every single thing that is offered in our town. There are so many opportunities for kids to play sports, the library was reno-ed a few years ago and they have so many classes for all ages, even my mom does stuff there. In the summer you can get the beach pass and use ocean beaches, bay beaches and sprinkler parks all within TOB. Many of my neighbors sold their homes to their kids because no one wants to leave here. Schwags is right, stay south of the SSP and west of LENR and it's WB schools. If you have any specific questions feel free to FM me.

I grew up in South Huntington which is "Huntington Station" and my mom still lives there. It is still nice over there depending on where you're looking. I grew up in the "tree" section.
The schools is SD13 are diverse, which scares alot of people off, but are still good. It was a little too far for us to commute from there so we didn't look there but if we weren't hellbent on Nassau, I might've. And the taxes are very affordable. SD 3 is more diverse and the part of Huntington where the gang issues are, are zoned for 3. SD 5 (Melville, Dix Hills) has AMAZING schools but they have mega budget issues going on right now so i'd be wary of huge tax hikes.

ETA I know nothing about West Babylon and we bought in Bellmore.

We live in West Babylon and love it!! My neighborhood is great . we live just south of sunrise so we are in west babylon schools and DD is starting kindergarten next year! I have many families i am friendly with on my block and i am happy to send my daughter to school here because i have heard great things about the district. we are close to babylon village and so can get to the train easily too. LOVE it here!!

Thank you guys so much for your insight. We added Seaford and Lindenhurst to the list of areas to look in. I'm certainly not afraid of diversity but do want good schools - that's my biggest concern. I live in Levittown now and know Island Trees is pretty good. I didn't know much about other areas. I'm only moving because I would like more space and we have put so much into this house it just doesn't make sense to try and dormer it.
We actually made it to an open house in Huntington on Sunday (Elwood school district). Not sure if we were in South Huntington or not but the area was nice. The address was 2 Morris Ave. Thanks again for the information!

I know you have been quoted before but Huntington Station is SO BIG and has a lot of very nice areas.
Some of HS is in Harborfields SD which is a great district and some of HS is in Cold Spring Harbor SD, it really depends on where in Huntington Station you look. HS covers at least 4 school districts and shares a zip with Dix Hills so some HS homes are really Dix Hills. Some parts are not very desirable and some are.

I'm biased bc I just moved here tho. Literally a month ago. We live in west babylon-and are zoned for north babylon schools. ive heard mixed reports bout north babylon schools butt-i know someone whose son is a highschooler and is involved in so many things and does really well.
i like diversity-im from queenzzzz.
theres a lot to do in west babylon/babylon.
i already found a good bakery with GOOD semolina bread, italian meat markets (YAY), good mexican, good italian, etc.
shopping out here blows my mind-thers a walmart (woohoo! we dont have them in queens lol), shoprite, stop n shop, target, home goods, etc. so many places to name and SO close. im used to driving for atleast 30-40 min for these stores.

I live in South Huntington (Look on a map, there is a difference between S. Huntington and Huntington Station). We share the same zip code for postal service reasons, that is it.
I LOVE where I live & I have a toddler who I am more then happy for him to grow up here. We are 5 min's from Town where there are a ton of shops, restaurants, etc.., 5 mins from the train, parkways and I am a stones though from the Mall. They are actually converting The Walt Whitman Mall to be the most high end Simon Mall in NY (I am sure they are smart people and would not invest $$ in an area they did not feel "safe").
I agree that I would stay South of Jericho and not by the actual Train Station...crime is and always was on the rise there. They are trying very hard to control it and I really hope they do because I know some people that bought in that area a few years ago. Every town has the plus and minus to it, you can drive into Garden City and 2 blocks later be in an area where I would not want to get out of my car alone.
Do your research on any area, drive around the neighborhood in the AM, at night, talk to local people in the supermarket, 7-11's, etc.. talk to real people who live in the area and not "hear say" of what people think a certain area is like.
We have $1mm + homes in parts of S. Huntington, there is also a very large middle class community with great diversity.
IMO it's a wonderful place to raise a family.
