Welcome to the "Common Core"! Gone are the days when you were able to help your children with their homework! I teach 5th grade, and I seriously have to teach myself the lessons before I teach my students.....and most times, I don't understand them myself! I've never felt so dumb! My colleagues and I sit there trying to teach ourselves, and we're DUMBFOUNDED! It's awful, and it's made me despise the career I worked so hard to prepare for. This all came about because college professors complained that students weren't coming prepared for college. They said that students were not understanding the reasoning behind things.....all they know are procedures (think "carrying the one" when adding....it's not really a one, its a TEN.) Chat Icon Please....I could go on and on about this. We're really not supposed to teach the kids anymore, either, believe it or not! We are now supposed to be "facilitators" and the students are supposed to be teaching each other. Lately I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone when I go to work. Chat Icon

This is what really bothers me. These strategies put way too much language into math. A child who has difficulty with language processing, reading, writing, etc, but who might have a strength for math, gets totally lost and frustrated, when if taught the "old-fashioned" way, he might succeed in this area.

I feel like these math strategies are great for advanced students. They require a higher level of thinking, and are not appropriate for every child.

My students are SO good at arithmetic, calculation, etc. Sure, its all rote and maybe they don't have the number sense to back it up, but they can do it, and they enjoy doing it, and most importantly, they experience success and build their confidence. They are so cute when you ask them how they got their answer. One of my little ones told me "My brain told me!" I was cracking up!

We picked 7 so it would be:
10+6 =16
and
7+9=16



I teach 1st grade in va, we teach the different strategies, but I would never give it to them for homework!! I just send regular problems and the students can use any strategy they learned! Good luck!!

My school puts it on our list of what we are assessing to give them a grade on their report card Chat Icon so if they don't get that strategy it could bring down their math grade

Just so everyone knows, these types of strategies are EXPECTED for first graders to know. They go along with the new Common Core Standards. So, no, math is no longer 9 + 7 = 16. Even if that's the way we were taught back in the day, kids are expected to know a lot more nowadays. My third graders are expected to know the Distributive Property. (4x6) = (4x2) + (4x4) or 4(2+4). That is insanely hard for 8 year olds!!!! But such is the math curriculum now.



We know they are expected, what some of us are arguing is that it isn't appropriate for 6 yr olds

I think it should look like this

10+7=17

7+9=16

Reasoning behind it is if 10+7=17, 9 is 1 less than 10, therefore 7+9=16.

You should just be using the number you picked. Most kids wouldn't think of putting the 6 in the equation. Also, they would have to use the 1 less strategy right in the beginning of the problem. Then adding 10, then the 1 less strategy again. If you do it the way I did, it is 2 steps. Adding 10, then 1 less.

Ok this is driving me a little nuts. I think I figured out the answer but I just wanted to get some feedback from you guys.

Here is the mat problem:
Pick 1 number from the box. The choices are 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9

Use words, numbers, or pictures to tell how you would make a 10 to add 9 to the number you picked.

Then write 2 addition sentences.

10 + _____ = _____

_____ + 9 = _____

DS picked 7 and I helped him figure out the addition sentences. We came up with :

10 + 6 = 16

7 + 9 = 16

Is this right?



You can use any of the numbers: 5,6,7,8, or 9 right? You just have to write out the math sentence and show the work using a 10 frame correct?

Seriously this common core shit is making me crazy! They take a simple equation like 2 + 2 = 4 and just complicate the crap out of it. My son can add and subtract. But when it comes to the word problems it's another story. Some he gets and some he doesn't. Why in the name of God do they have to write Math stories????????????? He had a problem on a HW once that said Write a math story for 8 - 6 = 2. I was like "are they for f***ing real?" Don't change your answer! The other way is what they're looking for (10+6=16 and 9+7=16).

Why is writing a math story for 8-6=2 so terrible?! I really don't get it. There were 8 birds. 6 flew away. How many are left? 2 That's definitely 1st grade appropriate.

Word problems and explaining your thinking is where math is these days. Why is it so bad for kids to have to <gasp> understand the meaning behind adding and subtracting? It's not!

There were too many people to quote so I didn't, but my answer was in response to those asking why the strategy was being taught. Those responses make it seems as if people don't necessarily know that they are expected. My response is that as teachers we are required to teach them. I'm not disagreeing that Common Core is hard and there are many days that I wish I didn't have to cover a certain standard because it is above my kids' heads, but if I don't, then I'm not covering what I'm supposed to. Also, they are going to be tested on it and I couldn't in good conscience not cover it when I know they will be presented with it on a test.
