Honey and an 11 month old

DS will be 11 months tomorrow-- I mistakenly gave him pizza dough (raw from store then baked at home) that had some honey in it. I assume it was a very small amount as it was last ingredient and he really didnt have much of the pizza anyway.

I am such a label reader for nuts as my DD is allergic, I am so mad at myself for missing this for DS.

How worried should I be?

Re: Honey and an 11 month old

I think I remember my ped telling me that if it was cooked (I specifically asked about glazes) that it was ok. So I wouldn't be too worried, but that's just me.

Yup. Especially since it was a small amount and a one time thing I wouldn't worry too much. Chat Icon

Re: Honey and an 11 month old

thanks- I guess if glazes are ok, a small amount in a bread is ok-- even though from what I am reading online it really shouldn;t matter what form it's in, the botulism spores can still be present and cooking doesn't get rid of them.

The issue is that it can be there, but not absolutely. I just have to hope its fine, but will def be more careful next time.

I wouldn't be too worried if it was my DS.. I accidentally gave DS honey nut cheerios at about that age and he was fine. I on the other hand was a nervous wreck!!

At around 15 mths I gave my DD something, bread, baked with honey by accident. Called the ped and they said dont worry since it was baked, esp.

once they are a year, they can have honey.

DS barely eats any baby food, and has a month to go-- so I hope he is fine with it and his stomach can handle it.

Re: Honey and an 11 month old

What makes honey dangerous is botulism spores. They are very tough and are not killed easily, not even when cooked. Its not true that regular baking would kill these spores. (from wikipedia "Botulism can be prevented by killing the spores by pressure cooking or autoclaving at 121 °C (250 °F) for 30 minutes")

The baby's tummy develops resistance as it gets older, so at 11m he's at less risk than a 10m old and at 12m the risk is negligible and its all relative to the maturity of the baby's gut ... some even wait till 2y to be safe.

It would be rare for baby to develop botulism poisoning but I would be vigilant as symptoms can take 3 days to develop. Its very treatable if caught early.
