He compared them with horses. Anyone who can read between the lines knows that comment was meant as a zing as if to say those two things are "out of date" I highly doubt democrats would have found it so funny and cheered obama otherwise. The president had a chuckle himself.

Just a silly little tidbit...not at all important in the grand scheme of the debate...but bayonets are still very much a part of modern warfare weaponry.

Bayonets are not "modern warfare weaponry." Even tanks are obsolete in the scope of modern warfare. Drones are modern warfare weaponry, cybersecurity is going to become hugely important in the coming years... bayonets and horses are not what win wars. Are they still used? Yes, but that doesn't mean we need to increase spending on them.

And there was no reading between the lines to be done. There are fewer bayonets and horses used in combat than in the past. Plain and simple. And as far as the navy goes, yes, we should keep our military up to date with modern technology, but when was the last time that a battle was fought at sea that we feel the need to INCREASE the size of our fleet???

And how is it we have money to throw at the military but not to make sure our own citizens have basic healthcare?

I really just feel that Romney isn't as educated on foreign affairs as he should be. It is not his strong suit by any means.

And just my two cents on Romney shipping jobs to China because of taxes to big business... I still feel that decreasing taxes to big business isn't going to increase jobs. Companies have learned to run just as efficiently with fewer employees than in the past. Giving a business a tax break is just going to increase their bottom line. It isn't going to increase their need of more employees to get a job done. If I have 2 guys doing the job that 4 used to do just because I got a tax break I'm not going to hire 2 more people back out of the kindness of my heart. Those two guys are still getting the job done. And I've seent his at several places I have worked. Even when profits have increased they're not creating jobs, they've already adapted to getting more done with less.

What will create more jobs is increased production. What increases production is a demand for a product or service and I think we have seen that the people who are in the top 1% are just not spending like they are capable of doing to stimulate the economy. Trickle down economics doesn't work.

oh...i forgot to mention...what the heck was that nonsense file the white house put out? that joke of a birth certificate that still had all the photoshop layers so that you could see it was not authentic? and before anybody jumps on that one...i downloaded it myself...from whitehouse.gov...opened it in photoshop and sure enough...i was able to unlock those layers and see the falsifications.

From Snopes:

Check out the bottom of this. It directly addresses the layers. Hope it helps to clarify!

My personal opinion...I haven't been crazy about romney from the beginning...but I don't trust obama...not to mention he's had 4 years and hasn't done a G.D thing he says he would. All I keep thinking every time he opens his mouth is "so what was the last 4 years???" it's like he's saying "siiiiiiiiike just kidding...I wasn't ready yet...ok, ok...NOW I'm ready"

I'm sorry, but I can't believe nobody else is making a bigger deal of this.

Did you really bring up the birth certificate thing? In a post about what the president didn't do for you, nonetheless?

When before this has a president EVER had to show his birth certificate to the public? And after everything that happened with this whole ridiculous charade and the repeated proof that he is absolutely an American born in the US I do not believe there are people who STILL question it. No white president has been forced to show their birth certificate to the American public. Romney's family lived in Mexico for quite some time - is anybody questioning where he was born? Further, you want to talk about someone not releasing information to the public...where are Romney's tax returns?

This birth certificate thing is absurd and ridiculous and the fact that it is still being used by people as some sort of argument against the president is mind boggling.

And even if you put all that aside - the question asked was what has the president not done for you. What on earth does his birth certificate have to do with anything?

ETA: Lee, I only quoted you because you had already cropped the part of the other post I wanted and I was too lazy to do it myself Chat Icon

I noticed it, I can't help but laugh. You can't come up with anything better than that? come on! Chat Icon Someone is about 2.5 yrs behind....Chat Icon Chat Icon

congratulations on being able to isolate the one point that i "threw in" among everything else and not only pick it apart but be condescending about it...because y'know...that really makes you seem like someone I'd like to get my information from.

in regards to the certificate...at no point did i ever say i felt he needed to furnish it...but since it WAS posted and it had those weird layers...yes it did seem suspicious to me. Thank you to he person that posted the snopes page with the debunking videos...i watched one of them. It was a while ago that i downloaded the certificate and saw the layers and some of what was on that site looked different to me than what i saw back then so i'd love to redownload it and see what they are talking about...unfortunately...for every expert that claims its not a fake there is an expert that claims it is...it was swept under the rug by the media so people were left to find info on the internet and come to their own conclusion. His birth certificate was never one of my main concerns although if it had been proven to be fake that certainly would make me question what the agenda was behind that.

for you ladies who like to be condescending to anyone with a different political view than you...how come you didn't pick apart my concerns re: libya? or solyndra?

as for what the president has not done PERSONALLY in addition to what i've posted already that was completely ignored and bypassed...my husband, a union worker, has been out of work for over 1 year out of the 4 years obama has been in office. We have been a sinking ship ever since and struggling to get back on our feet even after 1 full year of him working. He's given so much money to various companies that have failed and we see no repercussions for their frivolous spending and yet he says he supports unions...well...we don't see that support when over the half the union is out of a job. approximately 2500 out of 4000 members. The unemployment rate didn't drop until just before the presidential debates began and we still aren't that far from that 8% mark...I feel this is just another tactic to build hope in the american people to gain votes and i'm not buying it.

So we can't have tension with Israel now?? Don't friends occasionally have disagreements? Neither country should blindly follow what the other country wants.

As a practicing Jew and strong supporter of Israel, I actually said "oh good maybe all those Jews who keep saying Obama hates Israel will shut up."

I think it depends on your interpretation of the comment. I can definitely see your "Out of date" point but here's another interpretation that I got out of the comment -

This was Romney's quote:

"Our Navy is older — excuse me — our Navy is smaller now than any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We’re now down to 285. We’re headed down to the — to the low 200s if we go through with sequestration. That’s unacceptable to me. I want to make sure that we have the ships that are required by our Navy."

He's talking about how the Navy is smaller b/c there are less ships. Now Obama's rebut was this:

"But I think Governor Romney maybe hasn’t spent enough time looking at how our military works. You — you mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military’s changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines."

How I interpreted it was that there is more to the Navy than just ships - there's aircraft carriers, submarines, etc. We're no longer in the age of only ships, just like we're no longer in the age of only horses and bayonets. Although, yes, bayonets are still used by the Marines.

Wow.. I missed that. As a Sailor's Daughter and double sister (bro and sis both in) I find the president's answer shameful

We DO need more 'ships' and the navy (as well as all armed forces) are sorely depleted. I live in a military town we all look at it as a personal attack on our lives. Civil Service and miliary combined. I know they are firing / letting go of military personnel, can't afford them. Join the Navy for 4 years because that's all we can afford. My sister was lucky enough to be confirmed to reenlist. WTH is happening?!

Yeah we don't have enough ships. Cole shouldn't have happened, we need a rapid response Navy. They are on duty 100% of the time. they are short staffed, out dated and desperately in need of support. My 20yr old SISTER was actually driving the Nimitz for crying out loud! Great for her but we NEED more military support!

Sure I worry about healthcare, but we need to worry about PROTECTING our shores first then rebuilding within. You want to help the needy here, stop helping the hateful out there. I refuse to let my daughters clothes to any place out of country. Sorry Ecuador. Its not personal, but we need to help our own. Give money for the hungry in africa? Well what about the hungry here. I'd rather deliver turkey's to the poor in my town then send money overseas. Open your doors let a military person have thanksgiving at your table as they are so far from their own.

Is it selfish of us to take care of our own? I don't see why we have to be the superheros of the world ALL the time. We should be allowed to say "sorry but we have some house cleaning to do"

Oh and I'll say it again.. still think we should enforce term limits on congress and fire their happy bums! Chat Icon

my cousin is serving in the Navy. not at all concerned that his ship is going to be taken out from under him.

my brother killed people with that bayonet. happy he had it, but even happier he wasn't riding a horse while he did it.

I would like to see who is donating to his presidential campaign and whether or not ship building is a big business contributor, a la Halliburton and GWB.

and let me pause as I shed a tear for big businesses making billions of dollars but who pay ZERO or negative tax after they moved their jobs overseas to make more profits for shareholders. sniff sniff.

stay in this country. pay your taxes. employ your people, take a smaller piece of that huge ass pie for yourself. maybe you won't be AS rich, but you can still be pretty damned rich and be a responsible person to the country who you claim to be a citizen of.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I agree wholeheartedly...my mom is a military spouse...I see the work that goes in and when I heard the president say that last night...I am certain he just lost votes in Norfolk, VA. Russia has tested our air space and sea borders like its a joke. Iran, North korea...these are all serious threats that we need to be prepared for. ships still have their relevant place in the military and to think otherwise could prove to be dangerous. Not to mention that what little these military folks make is recirculated back into the economy...we need them...and not just for the security they provide.

re: helping our own...I couldn't agree more. ENOUGH with taking on the problems of the world. We need rebuilding, we need healing.

This is in no way meant to attack the men and women in our armed forces. What they do is selfless, however I think military spending to increase fleet size or to build ships is not money well spent. I think money would be better spent going towards intelligence and more advanced technology for our armed forces. That is where Obama sees money going, on things that will enhance what we already have.

Currently the US Navy maintains dominance of every ocean on the planet. No country in history has ever done this (not even Britain at the peak of it's empire). I believe we have over 280 ships in our fleet... does anyone feel that anyone is actually near challenging our naval presence? The President said it last night, we spend more on military that the next ten countries COMBINED. That is a huge chunk of change. I can't see any other country increasing their military spending by that much to catch up to us any time soon.

hi, I just want to say that this IS why we have social services. to help out own. food stamps and food pantries for the hungry, planned parenthood and medicAID for the sick, and Medicare and social security for the elderly and infirm.

social. services. that we pay for, for each other, through taxation, b/c our country and it's people SHOULD come first. that is the whole point.

so no, I don't think it's selfish in the least to take care of our own. what I do think it's selfish, is to cut funding for doing it, and vilifying the people who require the help, so you can put money into other areas where your investor friends can make PROFITS from.

I cannot wrap my brain around how incongrous your statement is to your general political belief. It's ok if it's charity, but not your civic duty?

there.

Chat Icon

hi, I just want to say that this IS why we have social services. to help out own. food stamps and food pantries for the hungry, planned parenthood and medicAID for the sick, and Medicare and social security for the elderly and infirm.

social. services. that we pay for, for each other, through taxation, b/c our country and it's people SHOULD come first. that is the whole point.

so no, I don't think it's selfish in the least to take care of our own. what I do think it's selfish, is to cut funding for doing it, and vilifying the people who require the help, so you can put money into other areas where your investor friends can make PROFITS from.

I cannot wrap my brain around how incongrous your statement is to your general political belief. It's ok if it's charity, but not your civic duty?

I'm in a position where I could lose my home. we struggle day to day. Yet...I don't qualify for any of these benefits put in place to assist. I don't qualify for HEAP. HAMP has been a joke and still trying to get it after 1 year. I don't qualify for food stamps or anything else. Yet there are people out there on food stamps with the iphone5 and an ipad? sorry but the system in place , the one that I MYSELF PAID INTO, is flawed.

ETA: we send money to haiti and japan meanwhile new orleans STILL has not been rebuilt...who's helping us with that?

if you are saying that people are committing fraud, you should report them. the system is flawed b/c PEOPLE are selfish. there is fraud at EVERY layer of society. people stealing from tax payers at every single layer, from your poorest of poor to your richest of rich.

I have never seen anyone walk into a store with the EBT card and an Iphone5 personally. I have never ever seen it. I am sure it probably exists and i know there are many LIFers out there who claim that this is rampant and they see if every day. REPORT it is all I can say. b/c the benefits should remain in place, and the bottom feeders of society (no matter what their socio economic class) should be punished for stealing.

I absolutely think their needs to be reform. but we do need the services. there are people who STARVE in our country. who need those stamps. and I know for a fact (yes, a fact) that the percentage of fraud going on is no where equal to the percentage of people with need.

but the PP whom you quoted was all for what you speak of. She just mentioned that we need to stop outsourcing, stop supporting companies who outsource and manufacture out of country, stop giving money to other countries and worry about our own people here in the us. I agree with that sentiment, completely. The U.S has such an important role in global economics that it would benefit ALL countries for us to focus on getting ourselves back on track. We are in such high debt to japan and other countries that if they ever called us on that debt we'd be screwed. We need to focus on US and turn that around and stop getting involved in other countries business...at least for a little while. We are not the police of the world.

Re: The Official LIF 3rd Presidential Debate Thread!!!

I think the tax issue is a smokescreen. Cutting taxes isn't going to make people hire. Even in the most favorable tax environment, businesses are still going to try to get by with fewer employees. Talking about the "great recession" the stock market and corporate profits have come back in a HUGE way but employment and wages have not. I see this in my own company. In order to survive, my company laid off MANY people between 2008 and 2010. We completely restructured the business. We moved so much more online, we dumped a lot of our real estate and infrstructure expenditures and the people who ran them. People who formerly did their job pertaining to one specific geographic location are now working on what would have once been the job of 5 people. As a result, we're all more stressed, but the company is profitable. We're making money. We're also NEVER going back to the old way. We're not going to hire more people just because we can. We have to post the highest profits, not the highest employment numbers.

What *is* going to make the company hire is more consumer demand. If we have more clients who need to be served, we will need more people to serve them more people to recruit and train those who do, and more people to service our systems, more people to ship materials from the warehouse. DEMAND.

What creates demand? More money in the pockets of ordinary Americans. The wealthiest 1% can already afford everything they need. Giving them tax breaks isn't going to make them buy a 4th car they don't need. But empowering the poor and the middle class so they can become consumers WILL create demand. The rich already have their TVs, their nannies, their healthcare, their cars. They're alreayd buying everything they need. But if we could get more money into the hands of people like you and me THAT would boost the economy. $1000 to a wealth person won't mean anything to them, but to a family, maybe it means you can take that family vacation, buy that new computer, send your kids to camp. THAT creates demand.

We have a free market economy so we can't force people to hire, but there are 2 ways to go about it. Big companies will continue to cut jobs, but I know there are plenty of small business owners, even LIF members who are probably doing all they can to NOT have to cut any jobs. People who go without to not have to lay anyone off. I know even at my big company back in 2008, we came up with creative ideas and ways to shift things around so we could keep our administrative assistant and not have to lay her off. Eventually bigger changes came and they laid all of them off, but at that time, my team pulled together and made sacrifices so someone could keep her job. If companies could me motivated by something other than greed, then maybe they would do that too. They'd keep on as many people as they can, but that isn't the way it works. And I don't care how horrible the taxes are here (they're not), making them better would still make hiring a sweatshop worker in China MUCH cheaper. No one wants to hear this, but regulation is the only way to keep jobs in the US. If a products manufacture has to involve a minimum standard based on human rights, then it will no longer be cheaper to hire people in China and ship the goods home.

Americans can also participate by trying to buy from companies that make their products in the USA. That can be misleading though because a lot of it can be made in another cpountry and still get that label.

Anyway, the problem is bigger than taxes. Companies coud be taxed at zero and it wouldn't matter - they're not going to hire workers unless they need to. They're only going to need to if demand increases, and they're only going to hire AMERICAN workers if they have to. So we need to also make sure our educaiton is up to par and that companies won't find the skillls they need in other countries.

since you asked

ok so with the exception of bahrain, bangladesh and brunei...countries donated roughly the cost of a car or a home. How much has our involvement in international affairs cost us?

from your own cited article

Actual funds used

An article in the April 29, 2007 Washington Post claimed that of the $854 million offered by foreign countries, whom the article dubs "allies," to the US Government, only $40 million of the funds had been spent "for disaster victims or reconstruction" as of the date of publication (less than 5%).[56]
Additionally, a large portion of the $854 million in aid offered went uncollected, including over $400 million in oil (almost 50%)

for you ladies who like to be condescending to anyone with a different political view than you...how come you didn't pick apart my concerns re: libya? or solyndra?

I'll bite. At least on Libya.

As someone who is a former foreign affairs officer who served at the State Department (and also previously served in the military), you really ought to stop relying on conspiracy websites for your "facts."

First off, it was a tragedy that we lost those four AmCits. It shouldn't have happened, but if you had been reading along with the news (legitimate news, that is), you'd know that Amb Stevens was known for going out into the terrain, and not taking his security detail with him. And when the attacks started on the consulate-- and I want to make sure you understand the difference between a consulate and an embassy, since Fox News can't quite get that distinction clear even weeks now after the incident-- it was clearly a chaotic scene and no one knew what was going on. The one thing they could plainly see was that people were coming in to kill the staff. I doubt that the staff on the ground were saying "Hold up, sir. Are you a member of Al Qeada or just upset over an offensive video clip?" In a somewhat lawless environment/conflict zone, it can be and is hard to tell who is who. Who is a big-T Terrorist, and who is someone who has been worked up into a lather by some kind of leader/preacher/mullah?

In the fog of war, in traumatic situations, time stands still. Things look like they are moving in slow motion. You don't know what end is up and what end is down. So was it an organized band of terrorists or an angry mob that had some kind of continuity to it because they were all incited over the same thing? The reports that we have now appear to indicate that it was more of an organized terrorist attack. But even if it were an angry mob, the actions carried forth are still very much an act of terror and violence. The Administration in the hours and days after the attack spoke about what they thought was the case at the time. They thought it was similar to the attack on the Embassy in Cairo. Further investigations have shown now that it was not the same. We still don't have all of the answers.

But would you or anyone else in this country sat silently back and not demanded information about the attacks if the admin had held back and said "we're investigating it"? No. You would have claimed that they were 'hiding' information, 'covering up' something. There was/is no response that would have satisfied those that hate the President.

So, I'd suggest that you first, find some different sources for your 'facts' since you seem to be quoting off of all of the known conspiracy sites out on the web. And then, I'd suggest that you do some deep reflection on your apparent hatred of those who hold different political views than yourself. America is a country of many different ideas, faiths, creeds, values, political parties, ethnicities, etc. This nation is born out of each individual's sacred RIGHT to think for themselves and to be allowed to believe what they want. But this nation is NOTHING if we don't compromise and find common ground. The moment we stop working together and 'take our ball and going home', is the moment our political system comes to a screeching halt, and those founding fathers that are so idolized, start rolling over in their graves.

Gotta hand it to the 40 or so Congressmen and women who ID themselves as members of the Tea Party. They have been doing a bang-up job at not compromising or even being willing to talk with those who disagree with them. Such wonderful efforts at political discourse are oh so productive and really do the founding fathers proud.

What is the count again? 13 days till Election Day. 71 days till sine die.

^that has nothing to do with how much was offered, and is not and should not be a reflection on the donors.

I am sure you now realized you didn't scroll down enough. 854 million dollars offered is not chump change. it's quid pro quo. we should be blessed that we have not had the need to call on our international friends nearly as often.
