Area Rug Placement

I want to purchase an area rug for my living room, but not sure about how to figure out what size to get. I don't want the rug to cover all of the room - still want to see the hard wood floors around the rug. My LR is rectangular - when you enter the room, the couch is along the right wall, there is a coffee table in front of the couch and then a bay window in the center of the left wall with built in book cases on both sides of the window (window and couch are on the long sides of the rectangle).

I guess my question is, do I buy a rug that goes all the way under the couch (so that the edge of the rug is against the right wall), part way under the couch or do I have the edge of the rug at the front edge of the couch, or, do I center the rug in the room so that it doesn't come up to the couch at all - but then maybe its only partly under the coffee table? (Hope this makes sense - sorry, I don't have any pics right now.)

Thanks!

You can either have it centered in the room (so therefore under the couch), or you pull it out more and maybe center the coffee table on it
either way, you want to have some sort of symmetry
hard to really say without seeing a pic and size of rug in relation to everything else

I struggled how to put our rug & ended up putting edge in front of couches/chair like this:

wanted to protect the floor where the most traffic would be, but still see floors under couches, etc

It depends on what you want try all that is possible and see which one looks better. We have our jute rugs edges under the couch and it looks good that way.
