Re: Losing a parent and taking care of LOs

I'm sorry for your loss - I often wonder what I would do if anything happened to my mom because of all the help she provides me. Your mom was also so young - that must have been such a shock! Give yourself the space to grieve and cry - even if you have to cry with the babies, they'll be okay. Lots of hugs Chat Icon

So sorry for your loss. Let yourself grieve, kids are so resilient, they will be fine if mommy has some rough days. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm so sorry. I lost my mom a few years ago and for the couple of weeks following, it was hard for me to do anything. I remember having to go to the bank (2 minutes away) to deposit a check, and by the time I got back to my car, I was literally out of breath.

Grief takes a real physical toll on your body. Don't be afraid to let it happen. It's going to happen regardless. You will be surprised at how many people will come out of the woodwork to offer support - lean on them. Let them do errands for you. Don't try to cook or clean. It's seriously like after childbirth - you need to rest as much as possible and gather your strength before you carry on. For me, it took about a week and a half before I could do anything physical again. My sister took a little longer, I think. Neither of us had children, though.

Right now looking at your children makes you sad because they remind you of your mom. Time will pass, and eventually you'll see that reminder as something positive. It takes a LONG time. I know everyone says this and it sounds so cliche, but it does get better. It will get easier. I'm so sorry for you and wish you the best as you go through this. Chat Icon

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my dad unexpectedly in 2009. We woke up that morning to close on our house and got the call just as we were finishing up paperwork. He never met my DD and I still cry thinking about how stubborn he was about a very treatable infection. I wish I could help take your pain away, but all I can say is to use your support system...your friends or family that you trust are there for you! Please FM me if you ever want to talk!

My Mom lost her Mom when she was only 30 years old with 3 young kids & said that focusing on her kids helped her get through it. It's very tragic what has happened to you & your family, my heart & prayers go out to you Chat Icon

I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine the pain you are going through. Just take it 5 minutes at a time (literally, just aim for 5, then the next 5 etc), cry if you need to, talk to those around you, etc. Hopefully soon the pain will begin to pass and you'll be able to share with your DS' your wonderful memories of your momChat Icon

Re: Losing a parent and taking care of LOs

I am so, so, so very sorry for your loss.

I know first hand what it is like to lose a parent unexpectedly. My father passed away of a sudden heart attack 11 months before my wedding. He was 59 and in perfect health. We were also incredibly close.

The shock and the grief was overwhelming. I didn't have any children yet, but my sister did have my nephew.

She said having to take care of him helped her pull herself together, and she actually dealt with his loss better than I did.

I cannot imagine taking care of two infants in the state I was in, so please be very, very proud of yourself. Take care of yourself and find people to help you out when you need a break. I know your mom was the one to do this, but you need to find a friend or babysitter to give you some time to take care of yourself. To let yourself grieve.

I really recommend therapy. I waited many months before I went, and that was a mistake. I wish I had gone sooner because it helped a lot.

I can tell you, as cliche as this sounds, it does get easier.

I am so sorry for your loss. My heart truly goes out to you. Please feel free to FM me any time if you need to talk.
