Read this last night, very very sad story. Having worked per diem at Wycoff, I ran from that circle of hell after about a month. The only shock of the story is the hospital being found not negligent in her death. Rip.

Kind of makes you think of all the similar stories that occur in those places we DON'T hear about, especially because the ppl are poor and not white.

Such a sad story. And...as a side note...I was born in Wycoff Heights Hospital almost 40 years ago. My mother said the hospital was a little sketchy back then too.

This is so horrible, so upsetting. I showed the article to DH... he's a cop and used to work somewhat near Wyckoff. He said he wouldn't bring a dog there for treatment. He said the only hospital he's ever been to that's worse is Brookdale.

I truly don't understand how places like that stay open. When I think about what that poor girl's last moments must have been like I just want to cry. RIP Sabrina, and prayers for her family.

My friend's ex-DH is a NYPD cop and he always told her that if he ever got hurt on the job, do not let them take him there!

Funny (or not) a speech therapist that worked there said to me "I wouldn't take my dog here" also.

I live near this hospital there are good and bad stories with every hospital 10 years ago I had a lot of pain in my leg and it was turning purple with a big bulge in it. I went to st johns, elm hurst, ny hospital of queens, and mt Sinai of queens all were horrible they releAsed me I can tell you horror stories that happened at each. I was a teenager so didn't have a car so going to manhattan or long island while I could barely walk was out of question. This had been going on for weeks running from hospital to hospital. Wycoff is blocks away from me and I had always heard bad stories but I woke up in so much pain I had to go I was taking right in and they found I had a massive blood clot they saved my life. While all the other hospitals did nothing.

So it's not the hospital always it's stories you always hear about bad not good. I will forever be greatful for that hospital for saving my life

Re: NYT: The Short Life And Lonely Death of Sabrina Seelig

I think every hospital is scary and no place I ever want to be again

the level of care I recieved at stony brook last year was almost criminal

1 example- I was there for 5 days after finding out I was type 1 diabetic- I was dehaydrated, mal-noursihed- basically a mess

when my dad wasn't there- I was scared- but he would leave at night-

one night I work up a 4am- shaking, feeling very sick- this was my first super low blood sugar- it happens when you are adjusting to insulin and should be expected

the RN REFUSED to check my blood sugar!!!!!!!!! He gave me a level of care I would have expected in a 3rd world prison (at this point I was diabetic for all of 3 days- I should be allowed to check my sugar when ever I ask)

finally I make a big enough stink that another nurse came in- checked my sugar- 43

and gave me OJ

guess what never made it on to my chart???

but I told my doctor and everyone that would listen to me all day

imagine if I went even lower and passed out- they might not have noticed or cared till the shift change at 7am or my dad came

it was an awful experince- I ran to my car when they let me out-

never go to the hospital alone- always have an advocate

this story is just terrible

What a terrible, tragic story. Nothing surprises me with hospitals anymore, after the experience I had during my stay when I had my DD last year.

This is so heartbreaking. I can't even imagine what she went through in her final hours, or what her parents still continue to go through.

Re: NYT: The Short Life And Lonely Death of Sabrina Seelig

I work with severely cognitively impaired people and it's amazing the amount of nonsense that goes on with hospitals.

We really need to fight for safe discharges.

It's often multiple ER visits before someone will finally get admitted.

Good Sam is the worst. I have to say at least the social workers/RN discharge planners seem to care, but the doctors still seem to do whatever the heck they want.

I do blame a lot of it on an overburdened health care system, and lack of preventative care for many, as well as ppl who abuse the ER for pain killers and the like.

I must be out of my mind, but this is actually the type of position I am really interested in doing at some point.

(Hospital social work).

I used to do social work in the city, and the hospitals, especially in Brooklyn, did not seem like what I envision a hospital should be.

They are very, very scary places.

You also can't always tell the difference between the patients and the staff.

My DH used to say the same thing about Coney Island Hospital.
If a cop ever got hurt on the job they would NEVER EVER bring them there even if it was closest.
It's really scary how bad some of these hospitals are.
