Does anyone have experience with a true stutter in DC, or recommendation for a dysfluency expert?
Seemingly overnight my DD has developed a pretty severe stutter. She just turned 3 last week and all of a sudden while we were on a family vacation with my parents, brothers and their SOs, she started stuttering on many beginning and mid sentences and words. She has a great vocabulary, strings together long sentences, but now this.
It doesn't seem like her mouth simply can't keep up with her brain, it seems like age actually has a blockage in getting the words out on the first try.
I'm heartbroken watching her become conscious of it. Stuttering does run in my family.
Does anyone have any tips or experience? I know you're not supposed to rush them or finish sentenced or say slow down and breathe, but I just feel so helpless.
I'll call for therapy first thing tomorrow. Any recommendations of a therapist?

No recommendations, but just wanted to let you know it could purely be developmental. I developed a stutter around that age too, and my mom freaked b/c my dad has one, but after having me assessed they said my mind was basically moving faster than my mouth. I had an advanced vocabulary and couldn't physically get the words out fast enough. I have no stutter today, but I do talk a lot, got in trouble in school for talking a lot, LOL, and occasionally I reverse my word order when I get going.

ITA - A speech therapist does not usually work on stuttering in a 3 year old.

I would take her to a neuro and have her checked out. They can tell you if it's developmental.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll research all options.
A neurologist?? How would they go about diagnosing that?

I'm a speech therapist. While at three years old, stuttering can be developmental but since it does run your family I would recommend giving Lee Caggiano a call. She specializes in fluency disorders and is very, very good. I'm not sure if she takes insurance though. At three, you can also go through your school district for an evaluation. Good luck.
