Flying with Baby in Bassinet on Plane?
Has anyone flown with their baby on the bassinet on a plane? What is it like? Was it comfortable for the baby or is getting a seat better? I am flying internationally so the seat is very expensive, but the plane offers a bassinet for the baby which I never heard of.

I remember seeing bassinets on international flights. The seats were in the first row, there was was a shelf on the wall in front of the seat with a bassinet on it. I dont know how it was secured. I think it would be fine for an infant, an older baby that is sitting and moving may have trouble with it.

DD will be 13 months when we fly and started crawling at 6 months so I'm sure she will be walking by then. I'm not sure how she will do. I am hoping the flight is not full so maybe we will get lucky and have an empty seat for her, but there are no guarantees.

I am not a mom, but was recently on an international flight that had the bassinets.
They are not large but a decent size. I think for an infant it is a good option especially if you are flying alone. Then you have a secure place to put the baby down. I know they have weight and height restrictions.
They can't be used during take off and landing or if there is turbulance.

I flew to England when DD was 7.5 months old. Your daughter will definitely be too big for the bassinet thing they offer on planes. She might fit in the baby seat (it's like a bouncy chair but it doesn't vibrate), but I would doubt it.
If she's a good kid and likes to play with you I would just make her a lap infant, I wouldn't spend the money on a seat unless she LOVES her carseat and would be happy strapped in for the long flight.
That said, if you are flying alone I would also consider getting her her own seat, b/c I can't imagine trying to wrangle a squirmy 13 month old all alone!

I'm not sur how your DD is but my DS did better in his car seat.
We flew to Florida over Thanksgiving (DS was 12months) and I was able to purchase a ticket for him going down but not on the return.
He was in his car seat and did good pretty much through the entire flight (he started to get antsy towards the last 40 minutes but its to be expected after being strapped into a seat for 3 hours).
Coming home was a whole other story. Since we had no seat for him it was hard to control him.
He whined, he cried, he fussed, he threw things, he kicked, he didn't want to sit in our laps - we were THAT family.
I think the fact that he wasn't strapped into a seat made him less able to focus on one thing and was distracted by everything else around him.
Also, don't go with the "hopes" of the plane being empty and getting a seat.
I was for CERTAIN that our return flight would be as well (we came home the day after Thanksgiving in the middle of the afternoon - I thought people would already BE where they need to be and that Friday would have been the least popular day for people to fly home...I was so wrong)

The bassinet is about 3 of the airplane pillows with a blanket thrown on top.
We flew to Ireland when DS#1 was 11 months and he did great in the bassinet - on the way over he slept in it. On the way home it was just someplace for me to put him so he wasn't cramped in our lap the entire time.
We just flew last summer when ds#2 was 18 months and he wouldn't really sit in the bassinet but he was happy enough in our laps.
I wouldn't waste the money on a ticket - they fly free for such a short period of time.

13 months is probably too old for the skycot, I fly internationally with my kids on my own all the time, my daughter has just turned two, so we have to pay for a seat now. It stinks...but I have flown with her on my lap for many longhaul flights, and its fine. I just flew from the UK to Florida holding her for the flight...it was tedious, but fine. One day of my life!
They will probably assign you a bulkhead seat, request that if you can. This way there is enough room for the kids to have a little play on the floor! Good luck! Don't buy a seat if you don't have to!

DS was 20 months old and over 34 pounds, but slept in the bassinet for good 5 hours. You can see his arm on the pic
