I don't think it's weird and forced. It's a nice birthday theme that's unique for the season. I personally find candy buffets, tutus and personalized shirts for birthdays as forced, trying too hard to impress, and more for show than anything else. People post more pics of their theme and candy buffets than the kid having fun, which makes me wonder. I say do what you want.
I could not agree more. Honestly I get so tired of seeing these trying-too-hard pictures of the candy buffets and all the crap from Etsy. I would much rather see something fun and fresh like your idea.

As long as we put pretty labels on the jars stating what they are.
Because I wouldn't know what an M&M was unless a pretty label was on the jar to tell me!

And I think this is silly... every little detail of any 1st bday party is for the parents...!
I disagree. Having decorations up of your child's favorite character is for the child (such as Sesame st balloons, plates, etc).

I clearly have too much time on my hands. Lol. Sing that to baby it's cold outside. It is a little strange to do winter in Aug but you can make it work. I wouldnt call it winter onederland though. Just use the theme make it crazy and it will work.
There is a company that will cover your lawn in snow (I once saw it at a block party) so if you really want to go all out, it'll last a few hours! I can't tell you the company, but they do exist!
