HELP with self injurious behaviors and tantrums (27mo)
My son is schizophrenic! He cries that he wants something and then when he has it, he cries about having it. Not only does he cry, but he bangs his head on the hard floor, bites his fingers hard, and will try to hit or bite us. Whether it's DH or I, an object, food, you name it - he wants it then wants it nowhere near him with an all out tantrum for sometimes an hour. Does anyone experience this as well?
He's 27 months, is semi-verbal - can express his needs and wants when NOT freaking out, and is generally happy, but the past week has been a nightmare! I don't know how to address the self injurious behaviors. Any advice welcome, PLEASE! This happens day and night - even 3am. He does not discriminate. HELP!!!!

have you spoke to the ped? Maybe some type of behavior therapy??

My 23m does this. She FREAKS out, screams, throws herself on the floor, bangs her head (then screams louder), bites her hand, tries to hit me.
you name it
She goes in spurts. Sometimes she does this everytime shes angry, sometimes she screams it out and she's fine. She's very verbal, large vocab and can express herself to me just not during these tantrums!
I usually grab her arms, or grab and lift her before she can hit the floor. when i do this I notice she calms down a few secs later so we can talk about whats wrong

He totally understands it's wrong, but I just don't know if I should completely ignore it or step in and prevent it. He seems to do it more when given the attention (i.e. me trying to stop the behavior before he leaves a permanent mark or requires a trip to the ER).
I spoke to the ped and they said it's all "typical" toddler behavior = "Terrible Twos" but I feel like this is more than just a tantrum. He is really acting out and frustrated and I don't know how to help him.
I've tried to reflect back his feelings. Ex: "Oh you want cookies now (at 3am)? I know you do, so when it's morning, you can have one. Right now, it's time for sleeping." Etc....
I just want to know that I'm not alone. I had a student with Autism that banged his head and it really freaks me out. I'm not saying I suspect Autism with my son, but the behavior is very unsettling since I've seen it cause major injury in a student and I am heartbroken that DS is hurting himself out of frustration. It breaks my heart.
