Pediatric Orthopedist Rec Please!

Hi Everyone,

I know I don't post all that often, but I do read along.

I was hoping that someone might be able to recommend a pediatric orthopedist for me. My DS's (15 months) feet are turning in when he walks and we need to get it corrected. My PED recommended someone, and when I did some research on him, all I read were terrible reviews from mulitple people on multiple websites. Therefore I don't feel comfortable contacting him.

Also, would I be able to just take him to a podiatrist? The one that we have seen in the past does pediatrics as well.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Pediatric Orthopedist Rec Please!

can i ask how severe it is and if he does it all the time? DS started doing this around the same age and at his 15 month appt, I brought it up to the Ped. She said that MANY children do this between 1-2 years of age and usually (most cases) will correct itself. If they are still doing it by age 2, it must be evaluated.

DS does still do it from time to time, more like he is being lazy or just walking funny because he can (at 20 months he tries to do lots of things because "he can") so I think he is out growing it.

if it is constant and severe, definitely have him evaluated. It doesn't hurt to have him looked at anyway just thought i would share our experience Chat Icon

Re: Pediatric Orthopedist Rec Please!

in Oct. we took dd to Dr. Ronald Lewis in huntington.
He didnt get such great comments on this site but he wasnt at all what people said (not kid friendly).
he was excellent with dd. He was very informative and knowledgeable about the situation.
dds legs bow and she has intoeing. he explained years ago that they would put braces on for the children to wear and it would help-but also doing nothing got the same results. they took xrays and we just have to watch her.
he def calmed my nerves because i thought she wouldnt walk correctly.
since than ive seen such an improvement already.

I recommend him too. My DD was born with clubbed feet and he did wonders with her feet. I am one of the people who found that his bed-side manner lacks a great deal BUT professionally he was top notch. He knows his stuff.

He does it all the time. His right leg is much more pronounced than his left leg. I don't think it is severe because when he sits his legs are straight, but my PED wanted me to see someone first.

Thank you all for the recommendations - I will be using them for sure.

Re: Pediatric Orthopedist Rec Please!

my DD did the same thing about the same age I was told to allow her to walk barefoot as much as possible and to put her shoes on the wrong feet and that helped her to straighten out better it kind of retrained her feet but instead of going to a ortho try PT through early intervention first maybe they can give you helpful hints and give you an idea of why he is doing it. good luck

I recommend him as well. DD was born breech and had hip dysphasia and he was great from start to finish. We saw him for two years and he was really on top of everything. at 1st he wasn't super friendly but after a few a visits I became to like him

Re: Pediatric Orthopedist Rec Please!

I would def get it checked out. My DD's feet started turning in when she began cruising and pushing walking toys (around 8 months). I let it go a couple months b/c her pediatrician said alot of babies feet turn in. I finally decided to bring her to a ped orthopedic (he was in NJ) when she was almost 11 months old b/c it was pretty severe and her foot was so turned in. Turned out my DD had tibial torsion where her tibia's were internally rotated. She ended up having to wear a foot brace (called a dobbs release bar) for 4 months. By beginning of May, the doctor said her tibia's were straightened out so we stopped the brace. Well a month later they started turing in, brought her back to the ortho who said at this point, it was coming from her hips, but wasn't dysplasia and there was nothing to do, she may just walk in-toed. So of course I brought her for a 2nd opinion, and got her an app't with Dr. Benjamin Roye (he was at NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Center-colombia orthopedics-I would recommend him and he's closer to you then my NJ ortho). He said the exact same thing the NJ orthopedic said, that it wasn't a concern and she would either outgrow it or walk in toed alittle. My DD is almost 2 and it has gotten better. Her feet still turn in and she trips over them at times b/c she goes so fast. I just keep an eye on it from now on. Good luck and if you have any questions, feel free to FM meChat Icon

I would not use him if you gave me a $1000 buck. Worst. Experience. EVER.

We wound up switching before my DD got her cast off and went to John Gaffney in Garden City.
