Whiskey Drinkers - a question about Jack Daniels Single Barrel

How would you say it compares to regular Jack? Is it as bold and strong? I'm looking to get it as a gift for someone who loves to drink their whiskey neat, and particularly likes regular Jack. He wasn't much of a fan of the green label Jack though.

I love whiskey, but I am not a JD girl at all..

TIA!

DH drinks whiskey. He drinks Jacks (mixed), but an even better bottle is Makers Mark. That you can drink neat.

Thanks - I'm a big Maker's fan and while this person does like it, he's definitely a JD guy at heart.

Well... a lot can actually go into a selection of whiskey...

what type? Irish Whiskey? Single Malt Scotch Whiskey? Blended Scotch Whiskey? Bourbon Whiskey? Tennessee Whiskey (Jack Daniels)? Rye Whiskey?

Im a pretty faithful Jack Daniels drinker myself... but its always mixed... if im going to drink whiskey "neat"... its going to be Johnny Walker Black (blended scotch whiskey aged at least 12 yrs) or Glenlivet 12 (single malt scotch whiskey aged 12yrs or Gentleman Jack (Tennessee whiskey)

I tend to stay away from Makers.. its a Bourbon whiskey, personally im just not a fan...

I would go with Gentleman Jack.... especially as a gift... it still has the charcoal mellowing process that Jack is known for, its actually done twice. and you can get a custom label for the bottle.

Thanks for the detailed response, Andrew. He's had Gentleman Jack and it's 'too smooth' for him. Same with Maker's and JD Honey.

He's the only person I know who likes JD neat. Occasionally he'll mix it with Coke or have it on the rocks...but most of the time, he likes it neat.

I know people are very particular about their whiskey, and I know he's been meaning to try Single Barrel...but at $50/bottle I don't want to spend money on something he might not like; it's also not something we've seen in bars where he could try it. I've seen him spend money on other whiskey and not like it at all.

Meh. Maybe I'll brainstorm some more and get him something else..thank you again for the reply!
