Difference between Gifted and Talented Class and Enrichment program?

Can someone explain it to me? I am trying to research schools in the area we are thinking of moving (out of state of NY) and I found it that that town has no G & T classes but all 4 of their Elementary schools have Enrichment programs. What does that give us? TIA! Chat Icon

The way it was explained to me is that G&T is for children who are assessed as gifted using a standardized test (WISC IV or SB, etc..). An enrichment program is generally for kids who meet all the criteria but either haven't been tested for IQ or have been tested and are below the 130 benchmark.

Our district had a gifted program - but the budget did not allow district funding for the IQ tests this year so the program for new 4th graders is considered 'enrichment' while the program for the 5th graders (who did test and were deemed gifted) is considered a 'gifted' program.

In my kids' school there is the gifted program (they call it Magnet here) where it's kids who have been assessed and qualify based on their tested IQ an a few other criteria. The kids are taken out of their regular class and do other projects & focus on other subject matter. They also have enrichment which is where the teacher who runs the Magnet program pushes into the classes and does additional subject matter with all the kids. I can't vouch for how it is outside my SD on LI or anywhere since it seems to vary from what I have heard. I would see if I could speak to someone in the schools in the area you are looking if you can get someone who can give you a specific explanation.

Dont let this be your deciding factor. I work in one of the elite districts on LI and we do not have G&T or enrichment. The idea is that every child deserves enrichment and we offer different programs so that this can happen.
