Bassinette? Necessary or not?

Ive heard many friends say not to buy a bassinette, that its not necessary, the baby can sleep in other things, that the baby doesnt even stay in it for long, and the baby may not even like to sleep in it.

But they are so cute Chat Icon

What do you think? Is it necessary or not?

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

not "necessary", no

you could make do with a pack and play if you are getting one of those anyway

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

Definitely not a necessity, there are lots of other options. Our son was in his crib in his own room from day 1, as will this baby be. So we never had any need for it. But if you like them and you want it, go for it!

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

It really depends on each families individual needs. I won't cosleep. I am not sure if we will need the pack n play we got so I don't want to open it. I want the baby in my room in the beginning. So for us, a bassinet is necessary.

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

We have a cradle and I thought it was a total waste of money because DD wouldn't sleep in it. But then DS slept in it every night. I didn't have to leave my bedroom at night for the first few months. So it worked out that time. Every baby is different.

I used a co-sleeper rather than a bassinette with DS and it worked out great. I never actually put the side down to "co-sleep" but it was bigger then a bassinette and he was a big boy. He was in it until he went into his crib. I will be using with #2 also.

This is the one we used: Co-Sleeper

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

I used my bassinette a lot and loved it!!!

I will dig it out of the attic and use it for baby no. 2 as well.

I guess its a personal preference.

You absolutely can. Many people prefer to have the baby in their room in the beginning, especially for middle of the night feedings.

Me too. It was necessary for us. I knew I wanted the baby to sleep next to us for a little while - at least until I felt more comfortable about her being in a totally different room and the night feedings were less.

I agree..I have one and used it with the first two kiddies and plan on using it with the third...

They CAN just use the crib but in the beginning they get up SOOO much that it is just easier (esp since I breastfed) to have them right there at arms reach to feed and put back down. when they started sleeping longer stretches that is when I transfered to the crib..it was at least for 3-4 months

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

I had one for DD and she hated it. She hated everything but my arms.Chat Icon

This time around I will be setting up DD's 'old' crib in my bedroom. We have he space and I won't be making a nursery for this baby. If it's a girl, she'll probably eventually share with DD rigt across the hall. If it's a boy, he'll stay with us until he is 12 and I can't part with him enough to let him mve to the bedroom ALL THE WAY downstairs.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes you can. Some people like the baby to be closer in the beginning.

It didn't work well for us with DS - he was a noisy sleeper - he'd sleep long stretches but, make a lot of noise so DH and I would be up a good chunk of the night while he'd sleep.

I think we are going to use it for this DC though - so they won't disturb DS. We'll either use a bassinet (there's one in the family) or the bassinet portion of the PNP.

Definitely not necessary. If you like them and have room to store it afterwards, then go for it.

We didn't have one. Chat Icon slept in the bassinet part of the pack and play until we moved her to her crib.

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

DD hated the bassinette. She slept in it for 2 nights. The 3rd night she wouldn't go to sleep. She has slept in her crib ever since.

With this one, I think we are going to skip the bassinette and go straight to the crib.

So for us? Not necessary.

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

crashing.....

we bought one after DS was born b/c he hated the crib. He would only sleep in the snug a bunny swing b/c he was well snug and upright. I couldn't take sleeping on the living room couch anymore, 3 weeks was enough!!
The Pack N Play was too bulky to fit in our bedroom next to his crib, so, I bought this bassinet ( BASSINET ) & it saved our life. Now, he's almost as long as the basket. Chat Icon

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

I recieved one and a rock n play and a pack n play

I was just reading that the baby can only stay in them up to 12-16 lbs depending on the model.

I plan to return mine.

I think we might just put baby in crib day 1 for a few reasons. its right down the hall from us, I go back to work at 6 weeks and the baby needs to be in there by then, our 2 dogs sleep in our room (1 has medical issues so he can't sleep anywhere else) so I'm worried dogs could wake the baby, and I also like to watch tv at night (selfish I know) but I want the baby to know its space starting from day 1.

But I haven't BTDT yet, so I'm just offering advice based on my thoughts/needs. If the baby needs to sleep with us I can use the rock n play or pack n play. I'm going to return the bassinette and buy things I still need off my registry.

Re: Bassinette? Necessary or not?

i wanted a bassinet b/c i do not want baby in our bed, and i'm also not sure if i will end up using the pack n play. but i felt the same way you did, and didn't want to spend the money or register for something that would only be used for a short period of time. lucky for us, we are borrowing one from my sister. is a loaner an option for you?
